Certifications for a forklift operator resume

Certifications and licenses
CredentialIssued byWhen it matters
Forklift operator training and evaluationYour employer, under OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.178OSHA requires employers to train, evaluate and certify each operator and to re-evaluate performance at least once every three years. There is no OSHA-issued forklift license, so list the trucks you are certified on and the date.
OSHA 10-Hour General IndustryOSHA Outreach Training Program (authorized trainers)Not required for forklift work, but shows basic safety training to warehouse and manufacturing employers.
DOT hazardous materials trainingYour employer, under 49 CFR Part 172Needed if you prepare, load or handle hazmat shipments. List it when you hold current training.

Do forklift operators need a license or certification?

Not a government license. OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.178 requires your employer to train you, evaluate you on the truck in your actual workplace and certify that you passed, with your name, the dates of training and evaluation and the name of the trainer. Your performance must be re-evaluated at least once every three years, and refresher training is required after unsafe operation, an accident or near miss, or a move to a different truck or work area.

That is why an online-only "forklift license" card is not enough on its own: OSHA has said a written test alone does not satisfy the evaluation. On your resume, write what you are certified on and when: "Forklift certified (employer evaluated): reach truck and sit-down counterbalance, March 2025."

Which forklift types should you list on your resume?

Job postings use truck names more than OSHA class numbers, so list the names and add the class if the posting uses it. Name the brands you have run if you know them, because many sites standardize on one fleet.

  • Sit-down counterbalance, electric (Class I) or propane and gas (Class IV and V)
  • Stand-up reach truck and order picker (Class II, narrow aisle)
  • Electric pallet jack and walkie stacker (Class III)
  • Rough terrain forklift or telehandler (Class VII), common on construction sites
  • Attachments: clamp, push-pull, carpet pole, side shift

How do you write a forklift driver resume with no experience?

Lead with warehouse work you have already done: picking, packing, loading, pallet jack use, RF scanning and inventory counts. Those tasks show you understand the floor, and many employers train new forklift operators on their own equipment.

Put your availability in the summary (nights, weekends, overtime) and mention physical requirements you meet, such as standing for 10-hour shifts and lifting 50 pounds. If you completed forklift training at a previous job, list the truck type and date even if you did not drive daily.

What numbers make a forklift operator resume stronger?

Warehouse managers run on productivity and accuracy reports, so use the same numbers your site tracks. Pull them from your WMS rate reports or your supervisor's scorecards.

  • Pallets moved or put away per shift
  • Trailers or containers loaded and unloaded per shift
  • Cases per hour on an order picker
  • Inventory or location accuracy from cycle counts
  • Months or years without a recordable incident
  • Building size and rack height: "750,000 sq ft, 30-foot racking"

Mistakes to avoid on a forklift operator resume

  • Claiming an "OSHA forklift license." OSHA does not issue one. Write that you are employer trained and evaluated, and name the trucks.
  • Not naming the truck types. "Forklift experience" is vague. A reach truck site wants to see "stand-up reach truck, 30-foot racking."
  • No numbers. Pallets per shift, trailers loaded and accuracy rates are what supervisors compare.
  • Leaving out shift availability. Distribution centers often hire for a specific shift, so say which ones you can work.
  • Hiding your safety record. If you have years without an incident or a safety award, put it in the summary.

Frequently asked questions

What should a forklift operator resume include?

The truck types you are trained and evaluated on, your most recent evaluation date, warehouse experience with pallets moved and trailers loaded, inventory accuracy, safety record, RF scanner and WMS experience, and your shift availability.

How do I write a forklift driver resume with no experience?

Lead with warehouse tasks such as picking, packing, pallet jack work and RF scanning, add your availability and physical capabilities, and say you are ready to complete operator training and evaluation. Many employers train new operators on site.

How do I list forklift certification on a resume?

In a Certifications section, write the truck types and the evaluation date, for example "Forklift certified (employer evaluated): reach truck, sit-down counterbalance, March 2025." Avoid calling it an OSHA license.

Does forklift certification expire?

OSHA requires employers to evaluate each operator at least once every three years, and sooner after an accident, near miss, unsafe operation or a change in truck type. A new employer will also evaluate you on its own equipment.

What skills should I put on a forklift operator resume?

Truck types you run, pre-use inspections, load stacking and securing, trailer loading, RF scanning, cycle counting and WMS use, plus situational awareness, reliability and teamwork.
