Auditor resume template
Short answer
Leslie suits an external auditor because it prints work experience straight after the summary, and audit hiring managers want to see engagements, industries and responsibility before software. The fictional sample is an audit senior at a regional CPA firm who runs fieldwork on eight engagements a year, brought data analytics into journal entry testing and reviews associates, after two years as an audit associate.

Why Leslie suits an auditor resume
Leslie runs summary, work experience, skills, education, so engagement counts, industries and your role in planning and review come before the tool list. Audit careers move by level (associate, senior, manager), and a page that leads with the jobs makes that progression clear. The centred blue header is its one accent.
Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta also leads with experience and puts education straight after it, useful if your master's in accounting is recent.
What goes in each section, in Leslie's order
Leslie prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Level, years, firm type and the industries you audit. Put "CPA" in the opening line if you are licensed, since certifications print near the end of this page.
- Work Experience. Give engagement count, industries and your role at each stage: planning, risk assessment, walkthroughs, testing, review, reporting. Seniors should add team size supervised and one improvement such as analytics or a better PBC process.
- Skills. Leslie prints labelled rows after the jobs. Technical can list audit areas and methods (risk assessment, internal control testing, substantive testing, data analytics); Tools lists the audit software and data tools.
- Education. List the accounting degree and any master's with years. Put the most recent first, and add honours or an accounting society role only in your first few years.
- Certifications. Write "Certified Public Accountant (CPA)" with the state and year. If you are not yet licensed, list passed exam sections in the summary instead of here.

How to make the sample yours
Match associate or senior level
Associates show what they tested (cash, receivables, inventory counts, confirmations) and the volume. Seniors show what they ran and reviewed: planning, team supervision, client relationships, reporting.
Describe clients by industry and size
Firms keep client names confidential. "Manufacturers, nonprofits and a credit union with revenue from $10M to $200M" says enough.
Add one analytics or process bullet
Full-population testing, an automated tie-out, a cleaner request list. It sets you apart from candidates who only list areas tested.
Mention specialist audits
Single audits of federal awards, employee benefit plan audits or SOC reports are specialisms; name them if you worked on them.
Plan the move to industry
If you are leaving public accounting, keep the audit detail but add what industry roles use: closing the books, reconciliations, SOX controls or reporting.
Keywords to keep where they are true

Mistakes to avoid
- Listing busy-season hours as an achievement; give engagements and responsibilities instead.
- Naming audit clients, which your firm treats as confidential.
- Writing "CPA" before your state board has issued the licence.
- A bullet per account tested; group the areas and show your role in planning and review.

Frequently asked questions
What should an audit associate resume focus on?
The areas you tested, the industries, the number of engagements and the software you used. Add one example of a finding you raised or a request list you improved, so you show judgement beyond completing tests.
How do I describe audit clients without naming them?
By industry, size and type: "nonprofits with federal funding", "family-owned manufacturers with revenue up to $200M". Never name clients unless the work is public and your firm allows it.
How do I show CPA progress if I am not licensed yet?
Say which exam sections you have passed and when you expect to finish, in the summary or under education. NASBA notes that licensing also involves education and experience requirements set by each state board, so keep "CPA" off until it is issued.
How do I move from external audit to an industry job?
Keep the audit experience and rewrite bullets in the language of the role: controls you tested become SOX knowledge, analytics become reporting skills. Add any close or reconciliation work from client engagements.
Should an auditor resume be one page?
Up to senior level, yes. Managers with several years of engagement leadership can use two pages.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Leslie PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
