HR business partner resume template

Short answer

Leslie works for an HR business partner. It prints a summary, then work experience ahead of skills, so the business you partner with and the decisions you shaped come before any list of HR competencies, and its centred blue header adds one quiet accent. The fictional sample is a senior HRBP for a 650-person product and engineering organization at a payments company, with an SPHR in her headline.

Why Leslie suits an HR business partner resume

Leslie prints the summary and then work experience before skills, which suits a business partner judged on decisions made with leaders rather than on HR tasks. The centred blue header and short blue underlines give a polished look with a single colour, and the summary has room to name the client group, its size and the leader you advise.

Second choice: Catalyst. Catalyst drops the summary and opens on experience, a good fit for a senior HRBP whose current client group and results need no introduction.

What goes in each section, in Leslie's order

Leslie prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Name your client group, its size, the senior leader you partner with and the kind of change you are handling (growth, reorganization, integration). That tells a hiring VP whether your experience matches their business before they read a bullet.
  2. Work Experience. Show the business problem first, then your part: a workforce plan that changed hiring order, an org redesign, a talent review that produced real succession moves, attrition analysis that led to action. Processes you simply ran (performance cycles, surveys) deserve one bullet, not five.
  3. Skills. Partnering work (workforce planning, org design, talent reviews, change management, people analytics) in one row and systems in another. Leslie prints these labelled rows after experience, so they confirm the bullets rather than replace them.
  4. Education. A master's in HR, organizational psychology or an MBA is worth listing with the year. Leave out coursework.
  5. Certifications. SPHR from HRCI or SHRM-SCP from SHRM, both aimed at HR professionals working at a strategic level. Certifications print near the end, so the sample repeats the credential in its headline.

How to make the sample yours

Describe the business, not just HR

Replace the payments engineering group with your own client group, and say what it does. An HRBP who can explain the business in a phrase reads as a partner rather than a service desk.

Lead each bullet with the leader's problem

Write bullets as problem, action, result: senior engineers were leaving, you ran stay interviews and proposed a new career level, regretted attrition fell. Use your real figures or none.

Count talent moves you can name

Successors named, internal promotions, critical roles filled from inside: specific moves that came out of a talent review beat a line about facilitating calibration.

Keep the generalist roots short

One earlier generalist or employee relations job with two or three bullets shows you can handle hard cases. Do not let it outweigh the partnering work.

Claim analytics only if you built it

If you built your own attrition dashboards in Visier, Excel or Tableau, say so. If an analytics team built them, describe how you used the findings with leaders.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Mistakes to avoid

  • A list of HR programs you administered with no business result or leader attached.
  • Presenting yourself only as policy enforcer or employee advocate; the role is about advising leaders on decisions.
  • Reorganization bullets that describe layoffs or individual exits in identifying detail.
  • Copying your company's competency model into the skills section word for word.

Frequently asked questions

How is an HR business partner resume different from an HR generalist resume?

A generalist resume shows breadth of HR work done well. An HRBP resume shows influence: the leaders you advised, the decisions you shaped and what changed for the business. Name your client group in the summary and lead bullets with the business problem.

What metrics can an HRBP use?

Regretted attrition, internal fill rate for senior roles, successors named, time to fill critical roles, engagement scores for your client group and headcount plan accuracy. Use the ones your company tracked, and present them as outcomes you contributed to.

Should an HRBP list SPHR or SHRM-SCP?

Yes, if you hold one. HRCI describes the SPHR as a credential for leaders who shape HR strategy and policy, and SHRM aims the SHRM-SCP at senior HR professionals in strategic roles. Put it in your headline too, since certifications print near the end.

How do I move from HR generalist to HR business partner?

Show moments where you advised a leader rather than processed a request: a staffing plan you helped build, an organization change you supported, data you brought to a manager's decision. Ask to partner with one client group and record what changed.

Should an HRBP resume mention layoffs or restructuring?

Describe your role in the change (planning, preparing managers, communication, support for affected employees) without counts that identify a team or person. Interviewers want to see that you can handle hard changes with care.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Leslie PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
