Resume template for your first management job

Short answer

Leslie suits a first management application because it puts work experience straight after the summary, so the leadership you already do without the title is the first thing read. The fictional sample is a support team lead at a software company with two years of informal people leadership, a company manager course and a mentoring role, applying for a first customer support manager job.

Why Leslie suits a first management role resume

Leslie prints work experience directly under the summary, ahead of skills, so the team lead bullets on schedules, coaching and escalations come before any list of qualities. Its centred blue header and short blue underlines add one touch of colour, enough to look finished without looking like a design portfolio.

Second choice: Catalyst. Catalyst opens on experience with no summary at all; choose it if your team lead title already makes the case that you are ready.

What goes in each section, in Leslie's order

Leslie prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Name the manager role you want and the leadership you already do: how many people, for how long, and which parts of a manager's job you have covered. Saying "without the title" once is fine; it shows you know the difference.
  2. Work Experience. Split the current job into people bullets and results bullets. Coaching, schedules and hard conversations show you can manage; metrics you moved show you manage toward something. Keep your individual wins for the older entry.
  3. Skills. Name management basics alongside the tools you run them in: scheduling, one-to-ones, ramp plans, queue reporting. Leslie prints them after experience, so they confirm what the bullets have just shown.
  4. Education. Degree and year on one line. A company management course belongs in the extra list unless it is a formal qualification.
  5. Leadership development. Training and mentoring show you prepared for the step. A new-manager course, a mentoring role or a leadership program each earns a dated line.

How to make the sample yours

Count the people and the months

"Lead a shift of seven agents" for two years is a management fact; "strong leadership skills" is not. Put the head count in the summary and in the first bullet.

Separate your change from the team's result

A team metric belongs on your resume when you changed something to move it: a rota, a coaching plan, a process. Name the change, then the result.

Include one hard part of managing

Supporting an underperformer, reworking a schedule nobody liked, pushing back on another team: one factual bullet like this shows you have done more than the pleasant parts. Leave names out.

Ask your manager what they handed you

Team leads often take over interviews, reports or budgets without noticing. Your manager can list what you covered, and each item belongs on the page.

Match the target company's words for the job

If postings say "people manager" or "team manager", use that in the headline. Match their metrics too, such as CSAT, first response time and backlog.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • people management
  • team leadership
  • coaching
  • onboarding
  • performance feedback
  • scheduling
  • one-to-ones
  • escalation management
  • CSAT
  • first response time
  • Zendesk
  • process improvement
  • interviewing and hiring

Mistakes to avoid

  • Listing "leadership" as a skill with no bullet behind it. The experience section has to show who you led.
  • Calling yourself a manager in a job entry when your title was team lead. The headline can name the role you want; job entries keep your real titles.
  • Filling the page with your own ticket counts and awards. For a manager role, two individual results are enough.
  • Claiming the whole team's numbers without saying what you changed to get them.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a management job with no management experience?

Show the parts of the job you already do: training, scheduling, leading a shift, running meetings, covering for your manager. Put the number of people and the time span in the summary and the first bullets.

Should I apply for manager roles at my own company first?

An internal move can be easier, because people there have already seen you lead. Apply outside with the same resume as well if no internal role opens.

What skills should a first-time manager put on a resume?

Coaching, scheduling, interviewing, performance feedback and the metrics your team is measured on. Name the tools you use for each, and back every one with a bullet.

How do I write a summary for a first management role?

Three sentences: your current role and years, the leadership you have done (how many people, how long), and the manager title you want next.

Is team lead experience the same as management experience?

Not always on paper, since team leads often lack hiring or budget authority. Describe what you did do, and if you sat on interview panels or wrote reviews, say so directly.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Leslie PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
