Social Worker Resume Example and Writing Guide

Short answer

A social worker resume should show your degree (BSW or MSW) and license, such as LMSW or LCSW with the issuing state, near the top. Follow with a short summary naming your practice area, then experience showing caseload size, populations served, assessments, interventions and documentation systems. New graduates add field placements with the agency, hours and duties.

Certifications for a social worker resume

Certifications and licenses
CredentialIssued byWhen it matters
Social work license (titles such as LBSW, LMSW and LCSW vary by state)Your state social work licensing boardThe BLS notes that all states require clinical social workers to be licensed; rules for nonclinical roles vary by state. List the title, state and status.
ASWB licensing exam (Bachelors, Masters, Advanced Generalist or Clinical)Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB)You apply to your state board first and register for the exam once approved. A passed exam is not a license, so write "license pending" until the board issues it.
Substance use counselor credential (for example CADC)Your state certification board for addiction professionalsWorth listing for co-occurring disorders, detox and outpatient substance use programs. Credential names differ by state.
CPR and First AidAmerican Red Cross or American Heart AssociationOften requested for home visits, residential programs and child welfare roles.

How do you list a social work license on a resume?

Put the credential right after your name ("Maria Delgado, LMSW") and again in a Licenses and Certifications section with the license title, state and status. A recruiter screening for licensure should not have to scroll to find it.

If your license is in process, say exactly where you are: "ASWB Masters exam passed, LMSW pending with the Texas board" or "Clinical supervision in progress toward LCSW." Never use a license title you do not hold yet. State boards protect those titles, and hiring managers verify them online.

What should a social work resume with no experience include?

Your field placements are your experience. Give each one its own entry with the agency, the population, the dates and the total hours, then two or three bullets about the work you did: intakes, assessments, groups you co-led, resources you found, notes you wrote.

Add paid or volunteer roles that show direct client work, such as residential aide, direct support professional, crisis line volunteer, shelter staff or behavior technician. Mention your degree program is CSWE-accredited if it is: CSWE notes that most states and territories require licensure candidates to have graduated from an accredited program.

What details make social work bullets stronger?

Social work hiring managers read for setting, scale and judgment. Name the setting and population, the size of your caseload, the screening tools and interventions you use, and the documentation standards you meet.

Outcome numbers are useful only when your agency tracked them, such as placements made, permanency reached, readmissions avoided or audit results. Keep every detail de-identified: no names, ages tied to a case, towns or diagnoses that point to a person.

  • Setting: "two 30-bed medical and oncology units" or "voluntary family preservation program"
  • Caseload: "22 families with biweekly home visits"
  • Tools: PHQ-9, GAD-7, C-SSRS, ASAM criteria, structured safety assessments
  • Interventions: CBT, DBT skills, motivational interviewing, solution-focused therapy
  • Documentation: "notes within 48 hours, 3 audits with no findings"

How does a social work resume change by setting?

Hospital and medical social work: lead with discharge planning, payer knowledge (Medicare, Medicaid, commercial plans), post-acute placements and the EHR. Child welfare: investigations or ongoing cases, home visits, court reports, testimony and statutory timelines. School social work: attendance and behavior interventions, IEP and 504 meetings, crisis response and work with teachers and families.

Clinical outpatient roles want your modalities, the diagnoses you treat, your productivity expectations and your supervision status. Macro roles (program management, policy, community organizing) want program size, budgets, grants and partners. Rewrite the summary and the first bullets of each job for the setting in the posting.

What format and length work best for a social work resume?

Use a reverse-chronological format with standard headings: Summary, Licenses and Certifications, Experience, Field Placements (for recent graduates), Education and Skills. A plain single-column template reads cleanly in county, state and hospital applicant systems.

One page fits BSW graduates and new MSWs. Two pages is normal for LCSWs with clinical supervision, specialized training or presentations. Government social work postings often ask for exact dates, hours per week and supervisor names, so keep a detailed master version you can draw from.

Mistakes to avoid on a social worker resume

  • Hiding the license or degree. If LMSW, LCSW or MSW appears only at the bottom, a screener checking requirements may stop before reaching it.
  • Writing client stories. Case vignettes with ages, diagnoses and towns can identify a person. Describe caseloads and interventions, not individuals.
  • Listing duties without scale. "Provided case management" says little; "managed 22 family cases with biweekly home visits" shows the job.
  • Using a title you do not hold. If you work as a case manager without a social work license, use your real job title and list your degree instead.
  • Burying field placements. New graduates who reduce placements to one line under Education lose their strongest evidence.
  • Unexplained agency jargon. Program names and internal acronyms mean nothing outside your agency. Spell them out or describe the program.

Frequently asked questions

What should a social worker resume include?

Your degree, your license title and state, a short summary naming your practice area, and experience that shows caseload size, populations, assessments, interventions and documentation. Recent graduates add a Field Placements section with agencies and hours.

How do I write a social work resume with no experience?

Treat each field placement like a job, with the agency, population, hours and two or three bullets. Add direct-service jobs or volunteer roles such as crisis line, shelter or residential work, and use an objective that names the setting you want.

What is the best format for a social work resume?

A reverse-chronological resume in a simple single-column template, with your license near the top. Keep it to one page early in your career and two pages once you have clinical licensure or several settings.

Should I put LCSW or LMSW after my name on my resume?

Yes, if the license is active. Write it after your name and list the title, state and status in a Licenses section. If it is pending, say "license pending" rather than using the title.

What skills should I put on a social worker resume?

Use the skills in the posting: assessment, case management, crisis intervention, safety planning, discharge planning, motivational interviewing and benefits navigation, plus the EHR or case system you know. Add languages you speak with clients.

How much do social workers make?

The BLS reports a median pay of $61,780 per year for social workers in May 2025. It projects employment to grow 6% from 2025 to 2035, which it rates faster than average.

Is a social work resume the same as a social work CV?

Not quite. A resume is a short summary for practice jobs, while a CV is longer and adds research, publications, presentations and teaching for academic or research roles.
