Civil Engineer Resume Example and Writing Guide

A civil engineer resume should show your licensure status (EIT or PE) beside your name and a summary naming your discipline, then project-based experience: project type, size or construction value, your design role and the standards you designed to. Add design software such as Civil 3D, your accredited engineering degree and a selected projects list.

Civil Engineer resume objective examples
Use an objective instead of a summary for new graduate and career changer situations: one or two sentences on what you bring and the civil engineer job you want.
Recent BSCE graduate who has passed the FE exam, seeking an EIT role in water resources where hydraulic modeling coursework and a stormwater internship apply directly.
Construction project coordinator with 4 years on commercial sites and a new civil engineering degree, seeking a design role where field knowledge of constructability and RFIs adds value.

Certifications for a civil engineer resume
| Credential | Issued by | When it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Engineer in Training (EIT) or Engineer Intern (EI) | Your state engineering licensing board, after you pass the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam | Shows you are on the licensure path. Write it after your name or as "EIT, FE exam passed 2025." |
| Professional Engineer (PE) license | Your state engineering licensing board (PE Civil exam administered by NCEES) | Needed to seal drawings and serve as engineer of record. NCEES designs the PE Civil exam for engineers with at least four years of post-college work experience. |
| Envision Sustainability Professional (ENV SP) | Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure | Useful at infrastructure firms that pursue Envision-verified projects. |
| Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) | Association of State Floodplain Managers | Relevant for water resources, floodplain mapping and municipal stormwater roles. |
How should you show EIT or PE status on a civil engineering resume?
Licensure is the first thing a civil hiring manager checks, so put it after your name ("Daniel Okafor, PE" or "Maria Chen, EIT") and in a Licenses section with each state. If you hold licenses in several states, list them all; firms bidding across state lines need sealed drawings in each.
If you are between FE and PE, say where you are: "EIT, PE Civil exam scheduled for spring 2027." NCEES offers the PE Civil exam in five depth areas (construction, geotechnical, structural, transportation, and water resources and environmental), and naming yours tells the reader your specialty at a glance.
How do you describe civil engineering projects on a resume?
Civil engineering is project work, so write bullets around projects rather than duties. Each strong bullet answers four questions: what was built, how big it was, what you personally did, and what standard or agency governed it.
Your role matters as much as the project. "Designed," "checked," "managed" and "observed construction" are different levels of responsibility, and interviewers will ask you to walk through your part of any project you list.
- Type: roadway widening, culvert replacement, pump station, mid-rise building, subdivision
- Scale: miles, acres, flow in cfs or MGD, square feet, construction value
- Your role: lead designer, engineer of record, design checker, resident engineer
- Standards or agencies: AASHTO, state DOT manuals, ASCE 7, ACI 318, local stormwater ordinances
What should an entry-level civil engineering resume include?
Lead with your degree, FE status and internships or co-ops. Treat your senior design project like a job, with two or three bullets naming the design problem, the software you used and the deliverable.
ASCE student chapter work counts too. Concrete canoe or steel bridge competition teams, survey camp and lab work in soils or hydraulics show hands-on experience. List the software you can actually produce sheets in, not every program you opened once.
What format works best for a civil engineer resume?
Use a reverse-chronological, single-column format with sections for Summary, Licenses, Experience, Selected Projects, Education and Software. One page is right for EITs; two pages are normal for PEs with several years of project history.
Senior engineers and project managers often keep a separate project sheet for proposals and qualifications packages. On the resume itself, pick the 3 to 6 projects that match the job, and keep the rest for the interview.

Mistakes to avoid on a civil engineer resume
- Listing software instead of work. "Proficient in Civil 3D" is weaker than a bullet that says what you designed in it.
- Hiding licensure. If the PE or EIT appears only on page two, a screener checking licensure may move on.
- No project scale. Give the length, acreage, flow, building size or construction value so the reader can judge complexity.
- Taking credit for the whole team. Say what you designed, checked or managed; interviewers will ask about your part.
- Implying a license you do not hold. Write "PE exam scheduled for March 2027" rather than anything that reads like a current PE.
Frequently asked questions
What should a civil engineer resume include?
Your EIT or PE status and states, a short summary naming your discipline, project-based experience with scale and your role, a selected projects list, design software, and an accredited civil engineering degree.
How do I write a civil engineering resume with no experience?
Lead with your degree, FE exam status and any internships or co-ops. Give senior design and ASCE competition work bullets like a job, and list the software you can produce plan sheets in.
Should I put EIT on my resume?
Yes. Writing EIT (or EI, depending on your state) after your name shows you passed the FE exam and are on the path to a PE license, which many firms look for in entry-level hires.
How much do civil engineers make?
The BLS reports a median pay of $100,840 per year for civil engineers in May 2025. Licensure, specialty, region and public versus private employer all move the number.
How long should a civil engineer resume be?
One page for EITs and engineers with a few years of experience. Two pages for PEs and project managers with a project list, as long as licensure and your current role are on page one.
What software should I list on a civil engineering resume?
The tools you actually design in. O*NET lists programs such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, Bentley MicroStation, Autodesk Revit and ESRI ArcGIS for civil engineers; add hydraulic, structural or scheduling software that matches the posting.
