Engineer Resume Example and Engineering Resume Guide

Short answer

An engineering resume should open with your discipline, degree and license status (EIT or PE), then show projects and jobs with what you designed, analyzed, built or tested, the tools you used (CAD, simulation, programming) and measurable results such as cost, weight, cycle time or defect rate. Keep it to one page early in your career and two pages later.

What should an engineering resume include?

Hiring managers read engineering resumes for three things: what you designed or improved, the tools and standards you used, and how you proved it worked. Every bullet should answer at least two of those. "Designed brackets" is weak; "Designed 12 sheet-metal brackets in SolidWorks to ASME Y14.5, all passing first article inspection" is specific.

One page is right for students and engineers with a few years of experience. Move to two pages once you have led projects, hold a PE or have patents or publications, and keep the strongest material on page one.

  1. Header: name with credentials (PE or EIT), city, email, phone, LinkedIn or portfolio
  2. Summary: discipline, years, industry, core tools and license status in 2 to 3 lines
  3. Experience: title, employer, dates, then 3 to 5 bullets with tools and results
  4. Projects: senior design, competition teams or major work projects with outcomes
  5. Education: degree, major, school and year; note an ABET-accredited program if the posting asks
  6. Skills and licenses: CAD, analysis, programming, standards, EIT or PE with state

How do you list the FE exam, EIT and PE license on a resume?

Licensure is not required for most entry-level engineering jobs, but it shows where you are headed. The BLS explains that you can take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam after earning a bachelor's degree, and engineers who pass are commonly called engineers in training (EITs) or engineer interns (EIs). After meeting the work experience requirement, typically at least 4 years, they can take the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam.

Put the credential after your name ("Marcus Bell, EIT" or "Dana Ortiz, PE") and again in a Licenses section with the state and year. If you have passed the FE but your state has not issued the EIT certificate yet, write "Passed NCEES FE Mechanical exam, 2026". Each state issues its own PE license, so list every state where you hold one; consulting and public-sector employers check this first.

How should you tailor an engineering resume by discipline?

The structure stays the same; the vocabulary changes. Recruiters search for a discipline's tools, codes and deliverables, so use the exact names that appear in the posting.

  • Mechanical: SolidWorks or Creo, GD&T, FEA, tolerance stack-ups, DFM, prototyping and testing
  • Civil: Civil 3D, grading and drainage, stormwater, permitting, plan sets, construction administration
  • Electrical: schematics, power distribution, NEC, PLCs, arc flash studies, PCB design
  • Industrial and manufacturing: time studies, line balancing, lean, Six Sigma, PFMEA, PPAP
  • Chemical and process: P&IDs, process simulation, scale-up, HAZOP reviews, batch records

What keywords belong on an engineering resume?

Pull nouns straight from the posting: software (SolidWorks, Civil 3D, MATLAB), methods (FEA, root cause analysis, design of experiments), standards (ASME Y14.5, NEC, ISO 9001) and deliverables (drawings, BOMs, test reports, plan sets). Put each one in a bullet that shows you used it, then repeat the main tools in the skills section so a keyword search finds them.

Do not list every program you have opened once. A short skills list that matches the posting reads as more credible than thirty tools, and interviewers will ask about each one.

Engineer pay by discipline

Pay depends heavily on the discipline. The BLS reports that the median annual wage for architecture and engineering occupations was $99,520 in May 2025, higher than the median annual wage for all occupations of $50,980. Median pay for selected engineering occupations in May 2025:

  • Civil engineers: $100,840
  • Industrial engineers: $102,440
  • Mechanical engineers: $104,110
  • Electrical and electronics engineers: $125,040
  • Chemical engineers: $125,040
  • Aerospace engineers: $134,960

Mistakes to avoid on an engineer resume

  • Tools with no work attached. A skills list of 25 programs means little; show the 5 that matter inside your bullets.
  • Team results written as yours. Say what you owned on a team project: "designed the suspension uprights", not "built a race car".
  • Missing license status. EIT and PE belong after your name and in a Licenses section, where civil and consulting recruiters look for them.
  • Unexplained internal jargon. Spell out company program names and acronyms the first time, or replace them with the standard industry term.
  • Confidential details. Leave out customer names, part numbers and drawings covered by an NDA or export controls; describe the work instead.

Frequently asked questions

What should be on an engineering resume?

Your discipline and license status, a short summary, experience and projects with tools and measurable results, education with your degree, and a skills section listing the CAD, analysis and programming tools that match the posting.

How long should an engineering resume be?

One page for students and early-career engineers. Two pages is fine once you have led projects, hold a PE or have patents or publications.

Should I put EIT or PE after my name on my resume?

Yes. Write "Name, PE" or "Name, EIT" in the header and list the state and year in a Licenses section. Each state issues its own PE license, so list every state.

What are good keywords for an engineering resume?

The software, methods, standards and deliverables named in the posting, such as SolidWorks, FEA, GD&T, root cause analysis, ISO 9001 and test plans. Use each one in a bullet that shows the work.

What is the best format for an engineering resume?

Reverse chronological and single column, with a Projects section for students and early-career engineers. Save it as a PDF unless the employer asks for Word.

How do I write an engineering resume with no experience?

Lead with education, then senior design, lab and competition team projects such as Baja SAE, Formula SAE or Engineers Without Borders, written like jobs with your role, tools and results. Add co-ops, internships and the FE exam if you have passed it.

How much do engineers make?

The BLS reports a median annual wage of $99,520 for architecture and engineering occupations in May 2025. Individual engineering occupations range from $98,590 for agricultural engineers to $161,740 for computer hardware engineers.
