What do consulting firms look for on a resume?
Consulting screeners read for evidence of three things: strong academic or professional achievement, structured problem solving with measurable results, and leadership. Every line on the page should support at least one of them.
For students, that means education first, with GPA, honors and test scores if the firm asks for them, followed by internships, leadership roles and case competitions. For experienced hires, it means project bullets that state the client type, your role, the analysis and the result, under a two-line summary of your industry and functional focus.
The BLS notes that management analysts are often called management consultants, and the O*NET profile lists titles from business consultant to organizational development consultant. Make your specialty obvious, such as supply chain, pricing, healthcare operations or technology strategy.
How do you write consulting resume bullets?
A good consulting bullet has an action, the analysis behind it and a result with a number. Keep each one to one or two lines, start with a strong verb, and say whether savings were identified or realized, annual or one-time.
If your result is not a dollar figure, use what changed: days cut from a process, a decision made, adoption by a client team or a follow-on engagement sold.
- Weak: "Supported client team on procurement project."
- Strong: "Built the spend cube for a $2B manufacturer and identified $6M in addressable savings across 4 categories."
- Weak: "Involved in market research for a new product."
- Strong: "Sized a $1.1B market from claims data and 18 physician interviews, shaping the client's launch sequence."
Which consulting resume keywords should you use?
Large firms, Big Four advisory practices and technology consultancies screen applications through applicant tracking systems, so mirror the posting's language where it is true for you. Use their phrases for the work ("stakeholder management," "business transformation," "operating model") along with the industries and tools they list.
Place keywords inside bullets that prove them, then repeat the most important ones in a short skills line. A skills section that says "change management" with no bullet showing a change you led will not hold up in a case or behavioral interview.
How should a management consultant resume change with seniority?
Analysts and associates are hired on potential, so education, internships and analytical work carry the page. Consultants and senior consultants should show the workstreams they owned, the models they built and the client stakeholders they presented to.
Managers and principals shift to people and revenue: teams led, client relationships held, proposals won and practice contributions such as toolkits or recruiting. Independent consultants write a resume that sells repeat business, with a summary of their niche, selected engagements and credentials like the CMC or PMP. At that level two pages are normal.
Is there a consulting resume template firms prefer?
Firms expect a compact, conservative page: one column, a serif or plain sans-serif font around 10 to 11 points, bold section headings, right-aligned dates and no graphics. Students applying through campus recruiting often skip the summary; experienced hires use one.
Many business schools and undergraduate programs publish a house resume template that consulting recruiters know well. If yours has one, use it for campus applications, then adapt it with a summary and selected engagements once you have a few years of experience.

Mistakes to avoid on a consultant resume
- Naming clients you are not allowed to name. Most engagements are confidential. Describe the client by industry and size, such as "Fortune 500 retailer" or "$2B regional bank."
- Activity instead of impact. "Supported the client team on a cost project" hides your role. Say what you analyzed or built and what changed because of it.
- Numbers without context. "Saved $20 million" needs detail: identified or realized, annual or one-time, your workstream or the whole program. Interviewers will ask.
- Jargon in place of substance. "Drove synergistic value capture" reads as filler. Write the way you would brief a client CFO.
- Two pages too early. Analysts and consultants with under about 5 years should fit one page; editing down shows the prioritizing the job requires.
Frequently asked questions
What should a consulting resume include?
Education (with GPA early in your career), experience bullets showing problems solved and measured results, leadership roles and a short skills line with Excel, PowerPoint and analytics tools. Experienced consultants add a two-line summary of their industry and functional focus and a list of selected engagements.
How do you describe consulting projects on a resume without naming clients?
Use the industry and size, such as "$1B specialty retailer" or "top-10 U.S. health system," then state your role, the analysis and the result. This keeps you within confidentiality agreements and still shows scale.
What are good consulting resume keywords?
Use terms from the posting, such as problem solving, stakeholder management, data analysis, financial modeling, process improvement, change management and project management, plus the industries and tools it names. Put them in bullets that show results, not only in a skills list.
How much do management consultants make?
The BLS groups management consultants with management analysts and reports a median pay of $101,860 per year ($48.97 per hour) in May 2025. It projects employment to grow 10% from 2025 to 2035, which it rates as much faster than average.
Should a consulting resume be one page?
Yes for students, analysts and consultants with under about 5 years of experience. Senior consultants, managers and independent consultants can use two pages or attach a separate list of selected engagements.
Do I need an MBA to become a management consultant?
No. The BLS lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education, though it notes that some employers prefer candidates with an MBA. Many firms hire undergraduates as analysts and MBA graduates as consultants.
Should I include a case competition on my consulting resume?
Yes, especially as a student. List the competition, your placement and one line on the problem you solved, because it shows the structured thinking firms test in case interviews.
