MBA Resume Example and Writing Guide
Short answer
An MBA resume is one page of results: work experience with company, title, dates and three to five quantified bullets per role, education with degree, school and honors, and a short additional section for leadership, languages and interests. For applications, drop the objective and summary, cut industry jargon, and quantify team size, revenue or costs saved.

What is the best MBA resume format?
Use one page. Wharton states that it expects a single-page resume uploaded as a PDF, and Harvard Business School asks for a standard business resume or CV with a simple format and minimal jargon and acronyms. Most programs and MBA recruiters follow the same one-page convention.
Applicants usually put experience first (company and location, then title and dates, then three to five bullets), while current MBA students and graduates put education first. Close with an Additional section of two to four lines: leadership, languages, certifications and specific interests. Use a clean single-column layout with no photo, graphics or color.
How is an MBA application resume different from a job resume?
Admissions readers are not hiring you for your next job; they want to see impact, leadership and progression. Wharton asks that bullets not read like a basic job description and suggests quantifying outcomes with team size, increased revenue or costs saved. Cut technical detail that only someone in your industry would follow.
The resume also sits next to other parts of the application. HBS, for example, asks separately about your three most recent jobs (responsibilities, key accomplishments and most significant challenge) and lets you list up to three awards and three activities. Your resume is the quick summary that makes those answers easy to follow.
How do you write MBA resume bullets?
Start each bullet with a strong verb, state the scope and end with a result: 'Led a 5-person analyst team that redesigned replenishment for 3 distribution centers, cutting inventory by $4.1M.' The reader should see what you personally did, how big it was and what changed.
Show progression. List promotions as separate titles or note them in the title line, and make later bullets bigger in scope than earlier ones. Three to five bullets per recent role is enough; older roles can drop to two.
- Action verb: led, built, negotiated, launched, redesigned
- Scope: team size, budget, markets, clients, product lines
- Result: revenue, cost, time, share, retention, risk reduced
- Context when it helps: 'selected from 40 analysts', 'first hire in the region'
The Harvard MBA resume format
When people say 'Harvard MBA resume format', they usually mean the classic one-page business layout: name centered at the top, Education and Experience sections with bold school and company names, locations and dates aligned right, short achievement bullets and a final personal or additional line. Students list education first; applicants usually list experience first.
HBS admissions does not require a special template. Its application guide asks for your standard business resume or CV and advises a simple format with minimal jargon and acronyms. Pick a clean single-column version of the layout, and see the Harvard resume format guide for the full structure.
What goes in the additional section of an MBA resume?
Use it for what adds depth but does not fit under a job: community leadership, board roles, languages with proficiency, certifications such as CFA or CPA, and two or three specific interests. Specific beats generic: 'marathon running (Chicago 2024), Sichuan cooking, restoring vintage bicycles' starts conversations; 'travel, reading, sports' does not.
Keep it to two to four lines. If a test score or language matters for the roles you are targeting, such as a strong GMAT for banking and consulting recruiting or fluent Mandarin for a China-facing role, this section or your education entry is where it goes.

Mistakes to avoid on an MBA resume
- Going over one page. Wharton expects a single page, and recruiters at MBA events read the same way.
- Industry jargon and internal acronyms. HBS asks applicants to minimize jargon and acronyms; write for a smart reader outside your field.
- Bullets that read like a job description. Replace duties with results: team size, revenue, costs saved, time cut.
- An objective or summary on an application resume. Wharton suggests removing them when you need space; your essays do that job.
- Generic interests. 'Reading and travel' wastes a line that could start an interview conversation.
- Inconsistent formatting. Align dates, keep tense consistent and use the same order of company, title and location in every entry.
Frequently asked questions
How long should an MBA resume be?
One page. Wharton states that it expects a single-page resume, and most MBA programs and recruiters follow the same convention. Some executive MBA programs accept two pages, so check each school's instructions.
What format do business schools want for an MBA resume?
A standard business resume: reverse-chronological experience with achievement bullets, education and a short additional section, in a simple layout saved as a PDF. HBS asks applicants to keep the format simple and minimize jargon and acronyms.
Should I put my GMAT or GRE score on my MBA resume?
Not on an application resume, because schools receive your official scores separately. Current MBA students often list a strong GMAT or GRE score in the education section when recruiting for banking or consulting.
Does an MBA resume need a summary or objective?
Usually not. Wharton suggests eliminating objective or summary statements if you need space. A one-line summary can help career switchers in post-MBA job searches, but keep it short.
What is the Harvard MBA resume format?
A one-page business resume with a centered name, Education and Experience sections, bold organization names, right-aligned dates, short achievement bullets and a personal line at the end. HBS admissions itself only asks for a standard business resume or CV in a simple format.
Where does education go on an MBA resume?
After experience on an application resume, because work impact is what admissions readers weigh most. Current MBA students and recent graduates put education first, with the MBA at the top.
What should I put in the additional section of an MBA resume?
Community leadership, languages with proficiency, certifications such as CFA or CPA, and a few specific interests. Keep it to two to four lines.
