CV format in the UAE: Dubai and Abu Dhabi (2026)

A CV for a job in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or anywhere else in the UAE is one or two pages long (GulfTalent), written in English, with your latest job first. What sets it apart is a short personal-details block: GulfTalent and Bayt both say to state your nationality and your visa status (GulfTalent) (Bayt.com), and employers want to know your notice period, which the UAE Labour Law sets at 30 to 90 days. (UAE government portal (u.ae)) Photos are common in Dubai but not required, and recruiters disagree about them.

This guide is for applicants of any nationality. If you are adapting an Indian resume, our UAE CV guide for Indian applicants covers the India-side steps, such as removing the declaration and attesting Indian degrees.

UAE CV format at a glance

"Source" links the official, job-board, university or recruiter page we read. "Varies" means sources disagree; the sections below say how. "Common practice" is a convention, not a rule.

Do Dubai and Abu Dhabi employers expect a photo?

Many do, but it is not a rule, and the people who give CV advice in the UAE disagree.

  • GulfTalent: "Most companies in Dubai prefer to see your photo on the CV. For multinationals and for more senior roles, this tends to be less common." (GulfTalent)
  • Bayt's 2026 guide goes further and calls a professional headshot "expected rather than optional". (Bayt.com)
  • Michael Page UAE says the opposite: "Photos are generally not required and are often best left out." (Michael Page UAE)

Our suggestion: for customer-facing jobs with local employers (hospitality, retail, front office, sales), a plain, recent headshot is reasonable. For multinationals, senior roles, and any application through an online form that reads your file, leave it off. If you add one, keep it small and in the header, not as a background.

Nationality, visa status and notice period: why employers ask

Hiring someone in the UAE means the employer arranges your work permit: it is illegal to work without a valid permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE). (UAE government portal (u.ae)) Your nationality and visa status tell the employer what that involves, which is why GulfTalent says your passport nationality "needs to be mentioned" and asks you to say whether you are on a visit visa, an employment visa or a dependant's visa. (GulfTalent)

Write your status the way the permits are described:

  • UAE residence visa (employment): you are working in the UAE now.
  • Residence visa (family sponsorship) or Golden Visa: both have their own work permit types, so an employer can hire you from inside the UAE. (UAE government portal (u.ae))
  • Visit visa or job-seeker visa: you can look for work, but not work. The law "strictly prohibits working while holding a visit or tourist visa" (UAE government portal (u.ae)), and a job-seeker visa runs for 60, 90 or 120 days. (UAE government portal (u.ae))
  • Applying from abroad: say where you are and that you would need an employment visa.

For the notice period, give the number of days in your contract. Under the UAE Labour Law it must be no less than 30 days and no more than 90 (UAE government portal (u.ae)), and GulfTalent says many employers strongly prefer people who can start immediately. (GulfTalent) If you are still on probation and moving to another UAE employer, the minimum is one month's written notice. (UAE government portal (u.ae))

Date of birth, marital status and the rest of the personal details

UAE job boards still show a fuller personal-details block than recruiters do. GulfTalent's table includes nationality, age or date of birth, marital status, visa status and driving licence (GulfTalent); Bayt calls date of birth "optional but common" and marital status optional. (Bayt.com) Robert Walters says you "should not include your age or marital status". (Robert Walters Middle East)

The UAE Labour Law bars discrimination on gender, race, colour, sex, religion, national or social origin or disability. (UAE government portal (u.ae)) Religion never belongs on a CV. Our suggestion for the rest: include nationality, visa status, notice period and, where relevant, a UAE driving licence, because they decide whether and when you can start; leave date of birth and marital status off unless the job ad asks. Passport and Emirates ID numbers are for the employer's forms, not your CV.

Attested certificates and degree recognition

Certain jobs require attested academic certificates. The UAE government portal describes the order: the certificate is authenticated in the country where it was issued, by that country's foreign ministry, then by the UAE embassy or consulate there; some professions also need the university degree attested by the Ministry of Education in the UAE. (UAE government portal (u.ae)) Inside the UAE, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs attests documents issued in or outside the country. (UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs) Recognition of degrees from foreign universities was updated by Ministerial Resolution No. 34 of 2025. (UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research)

It takes time. Zayed University tells new staff the process takes "at least 3 weeks" and that employees pay for it. (Zayed University) Don't attach certificates to the application; GulfTalent says to send the CV alone and give documents on request. (GulfTalent) Once they are attested, a short note on the education line tells the employer one step is done. For the steps in your home country, see our guides for Indian and Pakistani applicants.

Dubai or Abu Dhabi: what changes?

The CV itself doesn't change between emirates. What differs is where some jobs are advertised and who licenses some professions.

  • Government jobs. Dubai Government jobs are on Dubai Careers, which the government portal calls the Dubai Government job portal; the other emirates have their own portals. (UAE government portal (u.ae)) In Abu Dhabi, the Department of Government Enablement's Mawaheb platform connects jobseekers with public and private-sector roles. (Abu Dhabi Department of Government Enablement) Federal government jobs are on FAHR's iRecruitment portal. (Federal Authority for Government Human Resources (FAHR))
  • Healthcare. Licensing exams are set by the Ministry of Health and Prevention or a local authority: the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) in Dubai, the Department of Health (DoH) in Abu Dhabi. Name the licence you hold, or are applying for, on your CV. (UAE government portal (u.ae))
  • Emirati candidates. Emiratisation is "one of the highest priorities of the government", and private firms with 50 or more employees raise their Emirati share of skilled jobs by 2 per cent a year. Nafis runs the national programmes that support Emiratis in private-sector jobs. (UAE government portal (u.ae))

Where do people apply for jobs in the UAE?

The job sites and government portals we checked on 24 October 2026:

  • Bayt.com: a Middle East and North Africa job site, listed on the UAE government portal.
  • GulfTalent: a Gulf job site for professional roles that publishes Dubai job-search guides.
  • Naukrigulf: a Gulf job site, listed on the UAE government portal.
  • foundit Gulf: formerly Monster Gulf; listed on the UAE government portal.
  • LinkedIn Jobs: job listings and recruiter searches; the government portal says jobs are widely posted there.
  • dubizzle: a classifieds site with a jobs section, listed on the UAE government portal.
  • Dubai Careers: the Dubai Government job portal.
  • FAHR iRecruitment: federal government vacancies.
  • Nafis: private-sector jobs and programmes for Emirati citizens.

You can also send your CV to licensed recruitment agencies. Don't pay one: the government portal says job seekers are not required to pay any recruitment agency, because the fees are the employer's to pay. (UAE government portal (u.ae))

What goes in each section of a UAE CV?

  1. Header. Full name; city and country (e.g. Dubai, UAE, or your city abroad); +971 mobile, or your home number with its country code; email; LinkedIn.
  2. Personal details line. Nationality, visa status and notice period on one line under the header. Add a UAE driving licence if the job needs one, and languages if you prefer them here.
  3. Professional summary. Two or three lines: your role, years of experience, the markets or sectors you know (GCC experience is worth naming), and your strongest result.
  4. Experience. Latest job first: title, company, city and country, month and year. Three to five bullets with numbers: revenue, budgets, team size, sites, customers.
  5. Education. Degree, university, country and year. Add "attested for UAE use" once it is.
  6. Licences and certifications. Professional licences (DHA, DoH or ministry licences for health jobs), and certifications the job ad names.
  7. Skills and languages. Tools and systems from the job ad; English and Arabic with a level, plus other languages you can work in.
  8. References. Not on the CV. Have two ready, with their permission.

Common mistakes on UAE CVs

  1. Leaving out visa status and notice period. They are the first practical questions an employer has. One line answers both.
  2. Saying you can start now while on a visit visa. You can interview on a visit or job-seeker visa, but you can't work until the employer's permit comes through. Say "available to start once the work permit is issued".
  3. Paying a recruitment agency. The UAE government portal says the fees are the employer's to pay, not yours.
  4. Attaching every certificate. Send the CV alone. Give certificates, attested if needed, when the employer asks.
  5. Three pages or more. GulfTalent says one to two pages is right even with decades of experience.
  6. A casual or decorative photo. If you use one, it should be a recent, plain headshot. A holiday picture or a photo behind the text does more harm than none.
  7. Religion, passport or Emirates ID numbers. None of them helps an employer judge your work, and the ID numbers belong on their forms.

Free templates that fit

Resumity's 7 resume templates are free, single-column, and export to PDF and DOCX. For this market we would start with:

  • Meridian: plain black and grey, centred header with room for a personal-details line underneath.
  • Olivia: a solid blue header band that stands out on screen, for sales, hospitality and other client-facing roles.
  • Leslie: one touch of blue, experience ahead of skills, for experienced professionals.

The PDF export is A4. None of the seven templates has a photo slot; if you decide to use a photo, add it in the DOCX version. Put nationality, visa status and notice period on the last line of your summary, or add them as a line under the header in the DOCX.

What we have tested: the text in PDFs exported from each template comes back intact when read by three open-source extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). We have not tested them in any employer's applicant tracking system. See how we test our templates.

Check the file before you send it

The free check reads your PDF in your browser (the file is not uploaded) and shows whether your name, email, phone, section headings and dates can be found in the text. It doesn't know local conventions; use the table above for those.

Questions

Should I put a photo on my CV for a job in Dubai?

It is optional. GulfTalent says most companies in Dubai prefer a photo, but that it is less common for multinationals and senior roles; Michael Page UAE says photos are generally not required and often best left out. If you use one, make it a recent, plain headshot.

What visa status should I write on a UAE CV?

The one you hold now: UAE residence visa (employment), residence visa on family sponsorship, Golden Visa, visit or job-seeker visa, or that you are applying from abroad and would need an employment visa. GulfTalent says to mention whether you are on a visit, employment or dependant's visa.

What notice period is normal in the UAE?

Under the UAE Labour Law, the notice period must be no less than 30 days and no more than 90 days. Give the number in your contract, and say if you can start sooner.

Should I include my nationality on a UAE CV?

Yes. GulfTalent says your passport nationality needs to be mentioned under your personal details, and to list both if you have dual nationality. Bayt also lists nationality among the usual personal details on a UAE CV.

How long should a CV be for UAE jobs?

One or two pages. GulfTalent says one to two pages is the right length even with decades of experience, and Michael Page UAE says one page works for early-career professionals and two pages is standard for experienced candidates.

Is a CV for Abu Dhabi different from one for Dubai?

No. The CV format is the same across the emirates. What differs is where some jobs are posted (Dubai Careers for the Dubai Government, Mawaheb in Abu Dhabi) and, for health jobs, whether you need a DHA or a DoH licence.
