Data Scientist resume summary examples
3 data scientist summaries, one each for entry level, experienced data scientist and senior or specialty (healthcare). Pick the closest and rewrite it with your own title, years and one real result.
Recent MS in Data Science graduate with an internship building a fraud classifier on 2 million card transactions. Strong in Python, SQL and statistics; capstone forecast for a regional food bank cut spoilage-estimate error by 18%. Comfortable explaining models to non-technical teams.
Data scientist with 4 years in e-commerce: churn, lifetime value and recommendation models in Python and Spark. Designs and reads A/B tests end to end and works with engineers to put models into production on AWS. Writes short decision memos that product managers act on.
Senior data scientist with 9 years in healthcare and insurance, leading a team of 4. Builds readmission and risk-adjustment models under HIPAA constraints, owns model monitoring and fairness reviews, and has taken 11 models from prototype to production. PhD in biostatistics.
Data Scientist resume objective examples
Use an objective instead of a summary for new graduate, analyst to data scientist and phD to industry situations: one or two sentences on what you bring and the data scientist job you want.
Statistics graduate seeking an entry-level data scientist role on a product analytics team, bringing a capstone on survival models, two internships in SQL reporting and working knowledge of scikit-learn and A/B test analysis.
Data analyst with 3 years of SQL and Tableau reporting moving into data science, with completed coursework in machine learning and a churn model my current team now uses to prioritize account outreach.

Data Scientist resume bullet points
Bullets grouped by modeling and machine learning, experimentation and analytics, data pipelines and production and communication and leadership. The numbers are illustrations; put in your own.
Modeling and machine learning
- Trained an XGBoost lead-scoring model on 18 months of CRM data; reps working the top two deciles closed 1.6 times as many deals as with the old rule-based list.
- Replaced a hand-tuned rules engine with a gradient-boosted fraud model, raising recall from 0.61 to 0.78 at the same false-positive rate.
- Fine-tuned a transformer text classifier that routes 40,000 support tickets a month into 14 queues, reaching 0.91 macro-F1 on a held-out set.
- Built a hierarchical time-series forecast for 600 stores that finance adopted as the baseline for the annual plan.
Experimentation and analytics
- Wrote power analyses and launch criteria for 25 product experiments a year and caught 3 tests with sample-ratio mismatch before results were reported.
- Estimated the effect of a loyalty program with difference-in-differences when a randomized test was not possible, informing a $2M budget decision.
- Defined the north-star metric and 6 guardrail metrics for the checkout team and documented them in a shared metrics layer.
Data pipelines and production
- Wrote PySpark jobs that turn 1.2 billion daily events into feature tables in Snowflake.
- Containerized 5 models with Docker and served them as REST endpoints on Kubernetes with p95 latency under 80 ms.
- Set up drift monitoring and retraining triggers in MLflow; stale-model incidents went from monthly to none over two quarters.

What should a data science resume include?
A hiring manager reading a data science resume is checking three things: can you write working Python and SQL, do you choose the right method (including no model at all), and has your work changed a decision. Every section should answer one of those questions.
Use this order: a short summary, a grouped skills section, experience, projects, then education. Move education and projects above experience only if you are a new graduate or switching fields.
- Summary: your domain (retail, healthcare, fintech), the kind of models you build and your seniority
- Skills: grouped into languages, ML and statistics, data and pipelines, cloud and MLOps, visualization
- Experience: method plus result in each bullet, with the dataset size and who used the output
- Projects: 2 or 3 with a GitHub or write-up link, each with an original question
- Education: degree, school, year, and a thesis or capstone line if it is relevant
Which data science resume keywords matter for ATS?
Applicant tracking systems and recruiters search for the exact terms in the posting. If the posting says "machine learning" and "A/B testing," use those words, not just "ML" and "experiments." Writing both forms once ("machine learning (ML)") covers both searches.
Group your skills instead of listing 40 libraries in a block. A reviewer should see Python, SQL, your modeling stack and your cloud platform within a few seconds, and each core tool should appear again in at least one experience bullet.
How do you write a data scientist resume with no experience?
Projects become your experience section. Pick a question nobody has answered with a public dataset (city 311 calls, transit ridership, public health data), then show the full path: cleaning, a baseline, a better model, an honest error analysis and what you would ship.
Tutorial datasets like Titanic or Iris read as coursework, so leave them off. Research assistantships, analytics internships and data-heavy jobs in other fields (lab science, finance, operations) all count. Give them bullets with the tools and data sizes you used.
How do you quantify data science work when results are uncertain?
Use three kinds of numbers. A model metric shows technical quality (AUC, RMSE, recall at a fixed precision). A business metric shows impact (dollars, hours, error rate). An adoption metric shows that someone used it (which team, how often, what decision).
When impact came from a holdout test or a back-of-envelope estimate, say "estimated" and be ready to explain the method in an interview. A clearly labelled estimate is more credible than a precise number you cannot defend.
Should a data scientist resume be one page or two?
One page works for new graduates and data scientists with under 5 years of experience. Two pages is fine for senior candidates and PhDs, especially if a research role asks for publications.
Use a single-column template with standard headings (Summary, Skills, Experience, Projects, Education) and export to PDF. Skip charts of skill levels and two-column layouts, which some parsers read out of order.

Mistakes to avoid on a data scientist resume
- A skills wall with no evidence. Thirty libraries in a block tell a reviewer nothing; each core tool should appear in at least one bullet.
- Accuracy without context. "95% accuracy" on an imbalanced dataset can be worse than predicting the majority class. Name the metric that fits the problem and the baseline you beat.
- Projects that stop at the notebook. Show how you cleaned the data, what you compared against and what you would deploy.
- No business outcome. If a model changed a decision, name the team and the change. If it never shipped, say what you learned or cut it.
- A broken GitHub link. Reviewers click. A repo with no README or code that fails to run hurts more than no link at all.
Frequently asked questions
What should a data scientist resume include?
A two-line summary with your domain and seniority, grouped technical skills, experience bullets that pair a method with a measurable result, 2 or 3 linked projects, and your degree. Add certifications only if the role uses that cloud platform.
How do I write a data science resume with no experience?
Put a Projects section above education and treat each project like a job: the question, the data, your method, the result and a link. Add internships, research assistant work and any analytics tasks from other jobs.
What keywords should a data science resume have?
Use the posting's own terms: usually Python, SQL, machine learning, statistical modeling, A/B testing, the libraries it names (scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow), its data tools (Spark, Snowflake, Airflow) and its cloud platform. Each should appear in a bullet as well as the skills list.
How much do data scientists make?
The BLS reports a median pay of $120,230 per year ($57.80 per hour) for data scientists in May 2025. It projects employment to grow 35% from 2025 to 2035, which it rates as much faster than average.
Do data scientists need a master's degree?
The BLS lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education for data scientists. Some employers prefer a master's or PhD for research-heavy roles, so list a thesis or capstone if you have one, and let projects carry the weight if you do not.
Should I put Kaggle competitions on my data science resume?
Yes, if you placed well or the competition matches the job, such as forecasting for a retail role. List the competition, your rank and what you built. A strong original project usually says more than an average Kaggle finish.
What is the best data science resume template?
A single-column template with standard section headings, a grouped skills section and room for project links. Save it as a PDF and keep it to one page unless you have more than 5 years of experience or publications.
