Project Management Professional (PMP)Project Management Institute (PMI)Useful for program and IT project roles. List it with the year earned.
Licenses the announcement requiresState licensing boards or certifying bodies (for example, a CPA, RN or PE license)When a license is required, OPM asks you to include its type and date and provide any required documentation.

What is the federal resume format now?

Federal resumes are now capped at two pages. OPM's Merit Hiring Plan ended the long-form federal resume, and starting September 27, 2025, USAJOBS restricts all resumes to two pages, including saved profile resumes, new uploads and resume builder versions. The limit applies to competitive and excepted service announcements under Title 5.

The stakes are high. OPM tells agencies that if the only resume an applicant submits is longer than two pages, the applicant is ineligible for further consideration. Agencies outside Title 5, and judicial and legislative branch employers, can accept longer resumes only if the announcement explains how. Jobs that require a CV, usually in medical and research fields, may ask for it as an "other document".

What must a federal resume include?

OPM's applicant guidance lists what reviewers need to see. Missing items make it hard for HR to confirm that you meet the minimum qualifications, so check each one before you apply.

  • Contact information: your name, email address and phone number
  • For each relevant job: job title and employer, plus series and grade for any federal position (for example, GS-0343-11)
  • Start and end dates with month and year (05/2019 to 08/2022)
  • The number of hours you worked per week
  • Education: school name, completion date, degree type and cumulative GPA
  • Certifications and licenses when relevant or required, with type and date
  • When relevant: current security clearance, job-related training, language skills, organizations, publications and eligibility for special hiring programs

How do you show specialized experience on a federal resume?

Read the Qualifications section of the announcement first. Many OPM qualification standards for General Schedule jobs above GS-5, such as the one for the 0342 series, ask for one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower level, so a GS-12 job usually needs a year at the GS-11 level or its private-sector equivalent. The announcement describes what that experience looks like for the job.

Then write bullets that prove each part of it, using the announcement's own words. If it asks for experience "analyzing program data to recommend improvements", a bullet should show you analyzing program data and the improvement that followed. With only two pages, cut older and unrelated jobs and keep the experience that maps to the qualifications.

How should you format a federal resume for USAJOBS?

OPM's formatting recommendations for USAJOBS: save the file as a PDF so the page count holds, keep it at 5MB or less, use a sans-serif font such as Lato, Calibri, Arial or Helvetica, set 0.5-inch margins, and use 14-point type for titles and 10-point for body text.

You can upload your own document or use the USAJOBS resume builder, which follows these recommendations and starts from your profile information. Either way, check the final page count before you submit, because the limit is enforced.

What changed from the old federal resume?

Older guides tell you to write 3 to 5 pages and list salary and supervisor contact details for every job. OPM's 2025 applicant guidance does not list salary or supervisor contacts, and two pages leave no room for long duty descriptions. Replace them with short, results-focused bullets aligned to the announcement.

Some things have not changed. You still need month-and-year dates and hours per week, because HR uses them to credit your qualifying experience. Proof such as transcripts and veterans' preference documents is still uploaded separately with the application, not written into the resume.

Mistakes to avoid on a federal resume

  • Going over two pages. For Title 5 jobs, OPM says an applicant whose only resume is longer than two pages is ineligible for further consideration.
  • Missing hours per week or month/year dates. HR uses both to credit your experience. Leave them out and you risk being rated not qualified.
  • Generic bullets. A private-sector resume without the announcement's qualification language makes it hard for reviewers to match your experience to the job.
  • Leaving off series and grade. For federal jobs, write the series and grade (GS-0343-11) with each title.
  • Following outdated advice. Five-page resumes with salary and supervisor phone numbers for every job reflect the old format.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a federal resume be?

Two pages or less. Since September 27, 2025, USAJOBS restricts resumes to two pages for Title 5 jobs, and an applicant whose only resume is longer is ineligible for further consideration.

What is the format for a federal resume?

Contact information, then each relevant job with title, employer, series and grade for federal jobs, month and year dates and hours per week, followed by education with GPA, certifications and optional details like clearance, training and languages. Keep it within two pages.

Do I still need to include salary on a federal resume?

OPM's 2025 applicant guidance does not list salary as an item to include. Add it only if a specific announcement asks for it.

Should I use the USAJOBS resume builder?

You can use the builder or upload your own PDF. The builder uses your profile information and OPM's formatting recommendations, which makes it a safe choice if you are unsure about layout.

Do I need to list hours per week on a federal resume?

Yes. OPM asks for the number of hours you worked per week for each job, along with start and end dates in month and year.

Can I submit a CV instead of a federal resume?

Only when the announcement asks for one. OPM notes that positions requiring a CV, typically in medical and research fields, may ask for it as an "other document".

Is there a free federal resume template?

The USAJOBS resume builder is free and follows OPM's formatting recommendations. Any single-column template with a sans-serif font, 0.5-inch margins and 10-point body text also works, as long as it stays within two pages.
