Government job resume format: when a sarkari job needs a resume

For most government jobs in India you never send a resume. SSC, UPSC, IBPS and the Railway Recruitment Boards take applications through their own registration and online forms, and selection runs on exams.

A resume matters for a narrower set of posts: contract and specialist roles, project positions and some PSU and bank posts, where a panel shortlists from your papers. This page shows how to tell which case you are in, and how to format the resume when one is asked for.

Forms, not resumes: the big recruiters

RecruiterHow you apply (checked on the official portal)
Staff Selection Commission (SSC)One-Time Registration (OTR) on ssc.gov.in, then an online application for each examination.
UPSCUniversal registration and a common application form on upsconline.nic.in; recruitment posts are applied for online on the same portal.
IBPS (public sector banks)Online registration with uploads of a photograph, signature, left thumb impression, a hand-written declaration and the Class X certificate, plus a live photograph taken during registration.
Railway Recruitment BoardsAn account on rrbapply.gov.in, then an application against each Centralised Employment Notice (CEN).

State public service commissions and state boards run their own portals. The pattern is usually the same: register, fill the form, upload documents, take the exam.

When a government job does ask for a resume

  • Contract and specialist posts. State Bank of India’s specialist cadre officer advertisements are a clear example: CRPD/SCO/2026-27/24 (30 September 2026) lists a “Detailed Resume (PDF)” and a filled bio-data form among the documents to upload, each PDF up to 500 KB, and selects by shortlisting and interview.
  • Project, consultant and research positions in government departments, institutes and PSUs. These notifications often ask for a CV or an application in a set format. The notification decides; read it to the end, including the annexures.
  • Document checks. Whatever you submit is checked against your originals. SBI’s advertisement says candidature is subject to verification of all details and documents with the originals when a candidate reports for interview or joining.

If the post asks for a biodata rather than a resume, see the biodata format guide, which walks through SBI’s bio-data form field by field.

Format rules for a government resume

  1. The notification’s format comes first. If it prescribes a format or annexure, use exactly that, with no extra pages.
  2. Name and date of birth as on your Class X certificate. The IBPS notification, for example, accepts a birth certificate or the SSLC/Class X certificate as proof of date of birth.
  3. Education with board or university, year and percentage. IBPS asks for the graduation percentage to two decimals, with CGPA converted as per your university’s norms and proof of those norms at the interview.
  4. Eligibility “as on” the cut-off date. Notifications fix a date (the IBPS PO notification uses 21.07.2026 for qualifications). Your resume should show you met it.
  5. Experience with exact dates and a total in years and months. SBI’s advertisement says experience is reckoned from the details in your biodata or resume, and its form asks for the period in years and months.
  6. Personal details the post needs: date of birth, domicile for state posts, languages. Add category only if the notification asks for it.
  7. Current employer. If you already work, especially in government, check whether a No Objection Certificate is needed. SBI’s document list includes an NOC from the present employer.
  8. A declaration, place, date and signature at the end, in the notification’s own words if it gives them. See declaration samples.
  9. A text PDF under the size limit (500 KB per document in SBI’s advertisement).

Check your resume

Free, no sign-up. Choose your resume PDF and the check reads it in your browser; the file is not uploaded. It shows whether your text, your Education, Experience and Skills headings, and your name, email and phone can be read, with a ranked list of fixes.

Useful when a post asks for a resume PDF: confirm the text can be read before you upload it to the recruiter’s portal.

Questions

Do I need a resume for SSC, UPSC, bank or railway exams?

No. You register and fill the recruiter’s own online form, then take the exams. Keep a resume for posts whose notification asks for one.

Should a government job resume have a photo?

Only if the notification asks for it. Recruiters usually collect the photograph in their own form: IBPS, for example, asks for a photograph upload and a live photograph during registration.

Hindi or English?

Either, unless the notification says otherwise. Many central recruiters publish notifications in both languages; SBI, for instance, posts its advertisements in Hindi and English.
