Certifications for a lab technician resume
| Credential | Issued by | When it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Medical Laboratory Technician, MLT(ASCP) | ASCP Board of Certification | Widely requested in hospital lab postings. Put "MLT(ASCP)" after your name and in your certifications section. |
| Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) | American Medical Technologists (AMT) | An alternative MLT credential. AMT's education route asks for an associate degree from a NAACLS or other accredited MLT program. |
| Phlebotomy Technician, PBT(ASCP) | ASCP Board of Certification | Useful for lab assistants and processors who draw blood as part of the job. |
| Medical Laboratory Scientist, MLS(ASCP) | ASCP Board of Certification | The technologist-level credential, usually paired with a bachelor's degree. It opens more complex testing and lead roles. |
| State clinical laboratory license | Your state health department or licensing board, in states that license lab personnel | Some states require laboratory personnel to be licensed or registered. If you hold one, list the state and that it is active. |
How should you list MLT certification and a state license?
Put your credential after your name ("Priya Natarajan, MLT(ASCP)") and again in a Certifications and Licenses section with the issuing body. Recruiters for hospital labs often screen for certification before they read anything else.
If you work in a state that licenses lab personnel, such as California or New York, list the license type, state and that it is active. The BLS notes that in some states licensure requires certification, so a license line tells a manager you cleared both. Leave the license number off; employers verify it directly.
What bench details do lab managers look for?
Lab managers read for departments, volume and independence. Name each bench you are signed off on, the analyzers you run and maintain, your typical test or specimen count per shift, and the LIS you release results in.
Quality work is what separates a technician from a button-pusher. Mention QC review, Westgard rules, calibration verification, proficiency testing and inspections (CAP, Joint Commission or state) only where you actually did the work.
- Departments: hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, microbiology, blood bank, coagulation
- Instruments: "Sysmex XN-1000, Roche cobas 6000, VITEK 2"
- Volume: "about 350 results per evening shift" or "220 specimens accessioned per shift"
- Shift: day, evening, night or rotating weekends
How do you write a lab assistant resume?
Lab assistant and specimen processor jobs hire for accuracy and pace. Lead with accessioning, centrifuging, aliquoting, LIS order entry, send-out packaging and phlebotomy if you draw blood. O*NET lists lab assistant and specimen processor as reported titles for medical lab technicians, so use the title the posting uses.
If you have no lab job yet, build the resume from school labs, a phlebotomy externship, and work that proves you handle detail under time pressure, such as pharmacy, medical office or retail cash work. A short objective naming the shift you can cover helps, because many processing roles run evenings and nights.
How is a research lab technician resume different?
Research and industrial labs care less about analyzers and more about techniques. List methods by name (PCR, qPCR, Western blot, ELISA, cell culture, HPLC), the biosafety level you work in, and whether you follow GLP or GMP documentation.
Add a short Publications or Acknowledgments line if your work appeared in a paper, and name the electronic lab notebook or LIMS you used. A principal investigator reading your resume wants to know you can run a protocol unsupervised and record it so someone else can repeat it.
What resume template works for a lab technician?
Use a single-column, reverse-chronological template with plain section headings: Summary, Certifications and Licenses, Experience, Education, Skills. One page fits most technicians and assistants with under 7 years of experience.
Put instruments and LIS in a short Instruments and Systems section rather than a skills cloud. Hiring software and lab managers both search for analyzer and LIS names, and a plain list keeps them readable.

Mistakes to avoid on a lab technician resume
- Departments without instruments. "Worked in chemistry" is weaker than "ran and maintained Roche cobas chemistry and immunoassay analyzers."
- Hiding the certification. If MLT(ASCP) appears only at the bottom, a recruiter filtering for certified techs can miss it.
- Claiming tests you only observed. Rotations count, but write "under supervision" for anything you did not perform independently; managers check competencies.
- No shift information. Many lab openings are evenings, nights or rotating weekends. If you have worked them, say so.
- Patient identifiers. Never include patient names, accession numbers or results in your examples.
Frequently asked questions
What should I put on a lab technician resume?
Your certification and any state license, a short summary naming your lab type, experience by department with instruments and daily volume, quality control work, the LIS you use, and your degree. Lab assistants add specimen processing and phlebotomy.
How do I write a lab assistant resume with no experience?
Lead with an objective, your training (a phlebotomy course or lab coursework) and any externship hours. Then add jobs that show accuracy under time pressure, and say which shifts you can work.
What is the difference between a lab technician and a lab technologist?
According to the BLS, technologists (medical laboratory scientists) perform more complex tests and carry more responsibility for quality assurance. Technicians perform more routine, often automated tests, usually under the general supervision of technologists or lab managers.
How much do lab technicians make?
The BLS reports a median pay of $62,930 per year for clinical laboratory technologists and technicians in May 2025. Pay varies by state, shift differential and whether the role is technician or technologist level.
Do I need certification to work as a lab technician?
Not always. The BLS says certification is not always required to enter the occupation, but employers may prefer certified candidates, and in some states licensure requires certification.
What skills should a lab technician resume include?
Specimen processing, quality control, the departments you test in, analyzer maintenance and the LIS you use, plus soft skills like attention to detail and clear reporting of critical values. Match the wording to the posting.
