Technical writer resume template
Short answer
FAANGPath is the natural pick for a technical writer who works near engineering: its labelled skill rows print above the jobs, so OpenAPI, Markdown, Git and the docs tooling are read first. The fictional sample owns a payments API's reference and guides, moved 400 wiki pages into a docs-as-code repository, and earlier wrote admin guides in MadCap Flare for on-premises software.

Why FAANGPath suits a technical writer resume
FAANGPath was made for technical candidates who want their tools read before their jobs, and technical writing postings increasingly screen on exactly that: docs-as-code, Git, an API description format, a static site generator. The centred black and grey layout with full-width heading rules looks like good documentation: plain and easy to scan.
Second choice: Meridian. Meridian keeps the same skills-first order with grey rules running beside each heading; it suits writers of end-user help where tooling matters less.
What goes in each section, in FAANGPath's order
FAANGPath prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Your audience (developers, administrators, end users, regulated operators) and your doc types (API reference, guides, release notes, help centre). Then the workflow: docs-as-code, a component content system or a help authoring tool.
- Skills. Technical rows hold writing and structure skills (API documentation, information architecture, single-sourcing, OpenAPI); Tools holds Git, the site generator, linters and authoring tools. If you can read code or run curl and Postman calls, say at what level.
- Work Experience. Measure documentation the way product teams do: support tickets, time to first API call, search success, docs released with the feature. Give the size of the doc set and its readers, and keep one bullet on how you work with engineers.
- Projects. An open-source docs contribution or a public writing sample gives a hiring manager something to read when your work docs sit behind a login. Note that it was merged or adopted.
- Education. Any degree; English, communications, engineering and science are all common routes. A technical communication certificate can sit on its own line here.

Kenji Watanabe
Technical Writer, API and Developer Documentation
Seattle, WA | kenji.watanabe@example.com | (206) 555-0123 | github.com/sample-kenji-watanabe | linkedin.com/in/sample-kenji-watanabe
Technical writer with six years documenting APIs, SDKs and admin tools for developers and IT teams. Writes in Markdown in a docs-as-code workflow, reviews changes in Git alongside engineers, and judges documentation by support tickets and search success.
Experience
Senior Technical Writer, Cobaltgrid, Seattle, WA (03/2022 to Present)
- Own the REST API reference and guides for a payments platform with about 3,000 developer accounts, generated from the OpenAPI description and published with Docusaurus.
- Moved 400 pages from a wiki into a docs-as-code repository with pull request reviews by engineers; docs now ship in the same release as each feature.
- Wrote a quickstart that takes a new developer from API key to first test payment; support tickets on getting started fell by about a third.
- Added Vale linting against a house style guide based on the Google developer documentation style guide.
Technical Writer, Harrow Systems, Bellevue, WA (07/2019 to 02/2022)
- Wrote installation, administration and troubleshooting guides for an on-premises network monitoring product in MadCap Flare, single-sourced to PDF and HTML.
- Interviewed engineers and support staff each sprint to document new features and known issues before release.
- Redesigned the release notes template so customers could spot breaking changes at a glance.
Projects
Open-source docs contribution: Rewrote the getting-started guide for an open-source command-line HTTP client.
- Merged after review by two maintainers; it is now the first page new users see.

How to make the sample yours
Swap API docs for your doc type
Hardware manuals, medical device instructions, SaaS help centres and policy documents each have their own measures and tools. Keep the pattern (doc set, readers, result) and change the specifics.
Name your style guide
The sample bases its house rules on the Google developer documentation style guide; other teams use the Microsoft Writing Style Guide or their own. Naming one tells a reviewer you write to consistent rules.
Give a support or adoption number
Fewer tickets on a topic, faster onboarding, better search success. Support and product analytics teams usually have these figures if you ask.
Show how close you work to the code
Generating reference from a spec, testing code samples, reviewing pull requests: lines like these tell an engineering manager you will not need hand-holding.
Link samples you are allowed to share
Public docs you wrote can be linked by page. For private work, write a short tutorial on a public API and link that instead.
Keywords to keep where they are true
Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

Mistakes to avoid
- Describing documents you produced without saying who reads them or what changed after you wrote them.
- Listing programming languages you cannot read. "Reads Python and JavaScript samples" is honest; "Python, Java, Go, C++" invites questions you cannot answer.
- Leaving out the review process. Hiring managers want to know your docs are checked for accuracy, and by whom.
- Sending only marketing or blog samples when the job is reference material and procedures.
How the sample PDF reads in text extractors
We exported this sample with Resumity's PDF exporter in Chrome on 2026-10-29 and read the file back with three open-source text extractors. This shows whether software that turns a PDF into text can recover it; it is not a test of any commercial applicant tracking system. How we test templates.
| Extractor | Name, email, phone | Headings | Bullets intact |
|---|---|---|---|
| pdf.js 4.10.38 | All found | 5 of 5 | 8 of 8 |
| pdftotext (Xpdf) 4.00 | All found | 5 of 5 | 8 of 8 |
| pypdf 6.13.0 | All found | 5 of 5 | 8 of 8 |
Frequently asked questions
Do technical writers need to know how to code?
For developer documentation you need to read code, run samples and use Git, but you rarely write production code. For end-user or hardware docs, coding matters much less. Describe your actual level.
How do I show writing samples from private documentation?
Ask whether any pages are public. If not, write a short tutorial on a public API or improve an open-source project's docs, and link that.
Is a certificate in technical communication worth adding?
It helps when you are moving into technical writing from another field and have few samples. Once you have shipped documentation, the doc sets in your bullets matter more.
How do I move into technical writing from engineering or support?
Lead with documentation you already wrote: runbooks, internal guides, knowledge base articles, README files. Support staff can add the ticket topics their articles reduced.
What if my title was "content developer" or "information developer"?
Keep the official title on the job line and use "Technical Writer" in the headline if that is the role you want. The bullets show the work matches.
Will applicant tracking systems read this FAANGPath PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
