Copywriter resume template

Short answer

Leslie fits a copywriter because it prints experience before skills, and the case for a copywriter is in the work: campaigns, lines that were tested, names that shipped. The fictional sample writes for a home goods brand after three agency years, with a launch campaign across channels, a voice guide other writers use, headline tests run with the growth team and 14 product names cleared by legal.

Why Leslie suits a copywriter resume

Leslie puts work experience ahead of the skills rows, and a copywriter's case is made by the campaigns, lines and results in those bullets rather than by software. The centred blue header adds one note of colour to an otherwise plain page, which leaves the words to do the persuading.

Second choice: Catalyst. Catalyst drops the summary and leads with the latest job; a good choice for a senior copywriter whose current brand or agency is the headline.

What goes in each section, in Leslie's order

Leslie prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Your copy types (brand, conversion, lifecycle, UX) and your setting (agency, in-house, freelance). One clause on how you work, such as testing headlines or partnering with art directors, says more than "creative storyteller".
  2. Work Experience. Lead with the campaign or asset, then the channels, then a result you can stand behind: a test lift, a sell-through, a pitch won. Agency copywriters can name the account type and the creative partner they worked with.
  3. Skills. Leslie prints these after the jobs as labelled rows. Technical holds copy specialisms (conversion copy, brand voice, naming, email); Tools holds the places your words live, such as the email platform, the ads manager and the design tool you write into.
  4. Education. One line. English, journalism and marketing are common, but copywriting hires on the book, so this section stays short. A portfolio school can go here too.

Copywriter with five years writing ads, landing pages, emails and product names for consumer brands, at an agency and in-house. Writes in a brand's voice, tests headlines against each other, and takes work from brief to final proof with designers and legal.

Experience

Senior Copywriter, Linenfold Home, Brooklyn, NY (04/2023 to Present)

How to make the sample yours

Quote one line you wrote

A short tagline or headline in quotation marks inside a bullet lets the reader judge your writing straight away. Pick one that shipped and that you can talk about.

Report tests honestly

A lift in a two-week test is a test result, not a permanent change. Write the metric, its rough size and how long the test ran, as the sample does.

Credit your art director

Agency work is made in pairs. Saying you concepted with an art director is normal and shows you can work in a creative team.

Swap channels for your mix

B2B copywriters write white papers, nurture emails and webinar pages; UX writers write interface strings and error messages. Keep the brief-to-result pattern and change the formats.

Show you can write inside rules

Legal review, claims substantiation, packaging requirements, character limits. A bullet on writing within constraints separates a commercial copywriter from a creative writer.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Saying a campaign "drove record sales" with no number, timeframe or account of your part in it.
  • Leaving the portfolio link out of the header. Copywriters are hired on the book, and the resume should point to it.
  • Listing "creativity" and "storytelling" as skills. Show them in a quoted line or a bullet instead.
  • Claiming the whole campaign when you wrote the email strand. Name the pieces you wrote.

Frequently asked questions

Should a copywriter resume be written in the brand voice?

Keep it clear and professional, with a little personality in the summary. A resume full of puns makes the reader work too hard; save your range of voices for the portfolio.

How do I show results when the client owns the data?

Use relative figures (a lift of a few percent, a sell-through, a pitch won) or describe the outcome without numbers. Never publish client figures you were given in confidence.

What goes in a copywriter portfolio?

Five to eight pieces that match the jobs you want, each with the brief, your role and the result. Mix long and short copy so a reviewer sees range.

Is UX writing the same as copywriting?

They overlap but differ: UX writers write the words inside a product (buttons, errors, onboarding) and work with designers and researchers. If you want UX writing roles, put interface work first.

Can spec ads go on a copywriter resume?

Yes, early in your career, clearly labelled as spec work. Once you have live campaigns, they should replace the spec pieces.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Leslie PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 4 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
