Truck driver resume template
Short answer
Henrietta suits a truck driver: a plain business layout whose summary states your CDL class and endorsements on line one, followed by your driving history and then your CDL school straight after it. The fictional sample hauls liquid bulk on regional lanes with a tanker and hazmat (X) endorsement and a clean inspection record, after three years of over-the-road dry van freight.

Why Henrietta suits a truck driver resume
Henrietta prints summary, work experience and then education, so the CDL class, endorsements and miles lead, the carriers you drove for follow, and the truck driving school sits right after them. The black-and-grey page with hairline rules looks like the paperwork a carrier's safety department already handles, and the unlabelled skills grid keeps equipment and trailer types tidy.
Second choice: Meridian. Meridian puts labelled skill rows above the jobs; useful when trailer types (tanker, flatbed, reefer) are the main filter.
What goes in each section, in Henrietta's order
Henrietta prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Start with the licence: "Class A CDL, X endorsement" or whatever you hold. Then years, approximate miles, the freight and trailers you haul and how often you are home. If your safety record is clean, say so in the same sentence.
- Work Experience. For each carrier give the run type (local, regional, OTR, dedicated), trailer, weekly miles and freight. Add a line each on inspections, appointment windows and hours-of-service compliance; carriers hire on safety before anything else.
- Education. Henrietta prints this right after the jobs, which is where a recruiter checks your CDL school. Give the program, the school, the class you trained for and the completion month.
- Skills. The grid has no labels, so put the equipment and the work around it first (tanker loading, pre-trip inspections, load securement, backing into tight docks), the ELD and dispatch tools second and two soft skills last.
- Certifications. List the CDL with its class, endorsements and issuing state, and the medical certificate with its expiry. These print near the end of the page, which is why the headline and summary repeat them.

How to make the sample yours
Put endorsements in the headline
Tanker (N), hazmat (H), both (X), doubles and triples (T). Tanker and hazmat postings screen on these letters, so they should not appear only at the bottom.
Describe your runs
Local with daily home time, regional and home weekly, or OTR across the lower 48. Carriers hire to fill lanes, so the run type you have done tells them where you fit.
Show the safety record in numbers
Years or miles without a preventable accident, clean roadside inspections, no hours-of-service violations. If something is on your record, leave it off the resume and answer the application honestly.
Name trailer and freight types
Dry van, reefer, flatbed with tarping, tanker, car hauler, intermodal. Flatbed and tanker work involve skills a dry van driver may not have yet, so be exact.
Mention work at the dock
Live unloads, hose connections at a plant, grocery deliveries before the store opens. Shippers and receivers remember drivers who follow site rules, and recruiters ask about it.
Keywords to keep where they are true
Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

- OTR
- regional routes
- pre-trip inspection
- DVIR
- hours of service
- ELD

Mistakes to avoid
- Leaving the CDL class and endorsements only in the certifications list at the bottom of the page.
- "Safe and reliable driver" with no miles, years or inspection record to show it.
- Leaving out trailer types; a reefer carrier and a flatbed carrier hire for different skills.
- Listing an expired medical certificate as current.

Frequently asked questions
Where should my CDL class and endorsements go on a truck driver resume?
In the headline and the first line of the summary, then again under certifications. The federal licensing rules use letter codes: T for double or triple trailers, P for passenger, N for tank vehicle, H for hazardous materials, X for tank and hazmat together and S for school bus. Write the letter and the words so every reader follows.
Should I list my DOT medical card?
Yes, with the expiry date. Under the federal driver qualification rules a commercial driver must have been medically examined and certified within the preceding 24 months, and some conditions shorten that to 12 months, so a current card is one of the first things a carrier checks.
I just got my CDL. What should my resume show?
The school, the class you trained for, the hours of classroom, range and road time, and any endorsements. Since February 7, 2022, first-time Class A and B applicants must complete entry-level driver training with a provider on the Training Provider Registry, so name that provider. Add earlier jobs that show reliability, such as warehouse or delivery work.
How do I describe my safety record without a safety award?
Use facts you can prove: years or miles without a preventable accident, clean roadside inspections, no hours-of-service violations. The carrier will look at your record anyway; the resume tells them what they will find.
How long should a truck driver resume be?
One page suits most drivers. Give the last two or three carriers in full and group a run of short contracts into one line with the combined dates.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Henrietta PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
