UX researcher resume template

Short answer

Henrietta works well for a UX researcher: education comes straight after your jobs, so a master's in HCI or psychology sits high on the page, and the plain layout reads like a well-organised report. The fictional sample researches a music streaming app: a diary study that shaped a roadmap, a repeatable search benchmark, a large subscriber survey and a research repository product managers actually use.

Why Henrietta suits a UX researcher resume

Henrietta prints education directly after experience, which suits a UX researcher whose graduate training in HCI, psychology or a social science is part of the evidence for their methods. Its black and grey business layout has the sober tone of a research readout, and the unlabelled skills columns hold method names compactly.

Second choice: Daniel. Daniel prints skills ahead of experience under grey heading pills, closer to design-team resumes if your degree matters less than your methods.

What goes in each section, in Henrietta's order

Henrietta prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Give your methods range (qualitative, quantitative or both) and the kind of product. Research hiring managers want to know quickly whether you can run a survey as well as an interview study.
  2. Work Experience. Each study bullet needs the method, the sample and the decision it changed: "diary study, 24 listeners, set two quarters of roadmap" is the pattern. Add one bullet on research operations (repository, recruiting, screeners) if you built any.
  3. Education. Degree, field, school and year, plus a thesis line if it relates to the work. This is where a research lead looks for formal training in method.
  4. Skills. Henrietta shows the groups as three columns without labels: methods first, tools second, then the communication skills research leads look for.
  5. Certifications. Optional for researchers with a relevant degree. Nielsen Norman Group adds a Research specialty to its UX Certification when five of the courses passed are research courses; list it if you hold it.

UX researcher with five years in consumer software, running mixed-methods studies from interviews and diary studies to surveys and usability benchmarks. Trained in experimental design through an MS in Human-Computer Interaction.

Experience

UX Researcher, Larkfield Media, Pittsburgh, PA (09/2022 to Present)

  • Planned and ran a three-week diary study with 24 listeners on how they build playlists; the findings set the library team's roadmap for two quarters.
  • Designed a quarterly usability benchmark for search, measuring task success and time on task so the team can compare releases on the same tasks.
  • Ran a survey of 2,400 subscribers with the data science team to size interest in a family plan feature.
  • Built a research repository in Dovetail with tagged highlights from 60 studies, which product managers check before project kickoff.

Associate UX Researcher, Copperleaf Travel, Philadelphia, PA (06/2021 to 08/2022)

  • Ran remote moderated usability tests on the booking flow and presented findings at weekly product reviews.
  • Recruited participants through an in-app intercept and wrote a screener template the team still uses.
  • Coded 40 interview transcripts against a shared codebook for a study on group trip planning.

How to make the sample yours

End each study on its decision

Replace playlists and family plans with your own studies, and finish every bullet with what the team decided or changed because of the findings.

Give sample sizes plainly

Write the number of participants for qualitative work and respondents for surveys. Researchers are expected to know their n, and leaving it out reads as vague.

Show both kinds of research if you do both

Many roles ask for mixed methods. If you only do one kind well, say so and target roles that want it.

Keep the thesis only if it relates

A thesis on notifications or interruption is a real credential for a product research job. Drop it if it is unrelated and you have several years of industry work.

Leave confidential findings out

Describe the type of insight and its effect, never an employer's unreleased plans or anything traceable to a participant.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Bullets that name methods with no finding or decision attached.
  • Leaving out sample sizes, or claiming more than a small qualitative study can show.
  • Writing "user research" in every line instead of naming the method.
  • Participant names, identifying quotes or confidential results.

Frequently asked questions

Do UX researchers need a graduate degree?

No, though many have one in HCI, psychology or a social science. If you do, Henrietta prints it right below your work history. Without one, let the range of studies you have run make the case.

Does a UX researcher need a portfolio?

A short one helps: two or three case studies showing the research question, method, sample and impact, with confidential details removed.

How do I show research impact on a resume?

Tie each study to a decision: a feature cut, a roadmap change, a redesign, a benchmark that now guides releases. For a researcher, that decision is the result.

Can I move from academic research into UX research?

Yes. Translate papers and lab studies into product terms: the question, the method, the participants and what changed. Keep a few relevant publications in a custom section rather than a full list.

Should I list statistics software?

If you analyse survey or benchmark data yourself, name the tool (R, Python, SPSS). Quantitative research roles screen for it.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Henrietta PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
