Resume template for applying for an internal promotion

Short answer

Catalyst fits an internal application because it skips the summary and opens on your record at the company, with each title stacked under one employer. The promotion panel already knows your name; what it weighs is the climb and the manager-level work you have already done. The fictional sample is a claims support team lead applying for the manager job above her, with an acting stint and a leadership program.

Why Catalyst suits an internal promotion resume

Catalyst opens straight on work experience with no summary, so three stacked titles at the same insurer form the first block under your name. For a move inside the company, that progression and the eight weeks as acting manager are the argument, and Catalyst gives them the top of the page in teal headings.

Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta prints a summary first; choose it if the internal posting asks you to say why you want the role, or if you send the same resume to other companies.

What goes in each section, in Catalyst's order

Catalyst prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Work Experience. Write the employer once and stack each title under it with its own dates, newest first. Give the current role most of the bullets, and put any acting or stretch duties from the job you want (hiring, budgets, operations reviews) near the top, since those are what the panel is weighing.
  2. Skills. Lead with skills the manager job description lists that your current title does not obviously cover, such as workforce planning or performance reviews. Leave out basics the panel has watched you do for years.
  3. Education. One line. Inside the company your record counts for more than your degree, unless the posting names a degree as a requirement.
  4. Certifications. An industry designation earned while in your current job shows you are already preparing for the next one. It prints near the end, so add it to the headline if the manager posting lists it.
  5. Internal leadership development. Internal programs, projects for other teams and mentoring are evidence only an insider can offer: someone above you noticed your leadership. Say who nominated you or which teams you worked with, briefly.

How to make the sample yours

Copy the target title from the internal posting

Put the exact title of the role into your headline, so whoever screens internal applications can match you to the opening without guessing.

Answer each requirement you have not held a title for

Lay your current duties next to the manager job description. For every requirement your title does not cover, find a project, acting period or training that shows it, and give it a bullet.

Spell out team names and system nicknames once

Your manager knows what "Tier 2" or "the Q-board" means; an HR partner or a panel member from another department may not. Write each one in full the first time.

Tell your manager before you apply

Some companies require internal applicants to inform their current manager, and panels often ask that manager for input. Check your internal application policy first.

Recently promoted and applying elsewhere?

Keep the stacked format and give the new title its own entry and bullets, even after a few months. One new responsibility or early result is enough to show the step up.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • team leadership
  • promotion
  • acting manager
  • workforce planning
  • quality assurance
  • coaching
  • performance reviews
  • escalations
  • hiring and onboarding
  • process improvement
  • cross-functional projects
  • claims handling
  • customer satisfaction

Mistakes to avoid

  • Sending the resume you were hired with. A promotion panel wants your record inside the company, with internal projects and every title you held there.
  • Listing each promotion as a separate employer entry, which repeats the company name three times and hides the progression.
  • Writing what you would fix about your current team into the resume. Save improvement ideas for the interview, framed as plans rather than complaints.
  • Claiming an acting role as a permanent title. Keep your real title and describe the acting period in a bullet with its length.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a resume for an internal promotion?

Usually, even when the hiring manager knows you, because HR and other panel members may not. Tailor it to the new role instead of reusing the one you were hired with.

How do I show several promotions at the same company?

List the company once and stack each title under it with its own start and end dates, newest first. Give the current title the most bullets and the earlier ones two or three each.

Should internal training programs go on the resume?

Yes, briefly. A leadership program you were nominated for, or a project you led for another team, shows readiness in a way an external candidate cannot match.

How do I list a promotion I only just received?

Add the new title above the old one with its start month, even if it is recent. One or two bullets on new responsibilities are enough until you have results to report.

What if I acted as manager but never had the title?

Keep your real title and describe the acting period in a bullet with its length and duties, such as hiring, budgets or weekly reviews. For a manager application it is some of your strongest evidence.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Catalyst PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 10 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
