Resume template for starting a second career

Short answer

Meridian suits a second career after a long first one. It prints the skills that carry across, in the new field's words, above two decades of history, and lets that history sit as one compact block. The fictional sample is a detective sergeant who retired after 22 years in policing and is moving into insurance fraud investigation with a new forensic accounting certificate.

Why Meridian suits a second career resume

Meridian prints skills right after the summary and before work experience, so interviewing, financial records analysis and report writing are read before the police ranks. It has no colour and plain grey rules, a sober look that fits insurers, banks and compliance teams, the employers this sample is approaching.

Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta prints education straight after experience, lifting a new qualification higher; pick it if the certificate is your main argument for the move.

What goes in each section, in Meridian's order

Meridian prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Say that the first career is complete (retired, finished, after how many years) and name the new one in the same sentence, so the reader knows you chose this work. One line on the new qualification shows the move is prepared.
  2. Skills. Use the new field's words for skills you already have. Police case files become investigation reports; suspect interviews become recorded statements. Lead with the three or four skills the new posting names.
  3. Work Experience. Twenty years at one employer can be two entries: the last role with four or five bullets and the earlier years compressed into one. Keep the work closest to the new field and let the rest go.
  4. Education. The new qualification goes first with its completion month, and the original degree follows. If you are still studying, write "Expected" and the month.

How to make the sample yours

Compress the first decade

The early years of a long career need two or three bullets at most. The reader needs to know they happened and what they built, not every posting or assignment.

Make the move read as a choice

One clause in the summary ("retired from policing in 2026 to...") answers the question every reader of a second-career resume has: why now? Keep the fuller story for the cover letter.

Show you will do the work, not run it

If the new job is junior to your last rank, write bullets about hands-on work you did yourself as well as the team you supervised. Hiring managers want to see you doing the job they are filling.

Keep official titles and explain them in bullets

Do not rename "Detective Sergeant" to sound corporate. A bullet such as "Supervised five detectives" makes the rank clear to any reader.

Rebuild it for your own second career

A nurse moving into health IT or an engineer becoming a teacher follows the same pattern: the new qualification in the summary, transferable skills first, the long first career in one well-chosen block.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • fraud investigation
  • special investigations unit
  • claims investigation
  • recorded statements
  • financial records analysis
  • report writing
  • evidence handling
  • interviewing
  • forensic accounting
  • case management
  • testimony
  • regulatory compliance

Mistakes to avoid

  • Listing every assignment from a 20-year career with full bullets. It turns the resume into a service record and buries the work that fits the new field.
  • A summary written as an autobiography ("After a long and rewarding career..."). Lead with what you can do in the new job.
  • Keeping the first field's shorthand (codes, unit nicknames, case numbers) that a new reader has to decode.
  • Mentioning a pension or retirement income. It invites questions about commitment and salary the resume should not raise.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a second career and a career change?

A second career usually follows a long first one that has ended, often by retirement, and the person chooses a new field for the years ahead. The resume work is that of any career change, plus fitting two decades into one tight block.

How do I fit 20 years with one employer onto a resume?

Split it into the last role, with four or five bullets, and the earlier years in one entry with two or three. One page is rarely enough for a career that long; two is fine.

Should I say I retired from my first career?

Yes, briefly. "Retired from policing in 2026" explains the end date and shows the new field is a choice. Leave pension details out.

Do I need a new qualification for a second career?

Not always, but it helps when the first career has no obvious link to the new one. A certificate, license or course finished recently gives a reader something dated and relevant.

Will employers think I am overqualified?

Some may, especially if the role is junior to your old rank. Bullets about work you did yourself, a summary aimed at the job you want and a cover letter that says why you want it address that directly.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Meridian PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 4 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
