Resume template for returning to work after a break
Short answer
FAANGPath suits a technical professional coming back after years away: refreshed languages and tools print above the job history, and the break gets its own dated entry at the top of experience. The fictional sample is a backend engineer returning after four years abroad, with a refresher project, an open-source fix and a new cloud certification. The same structure works for returnship applications.

Why FAANGPath suits a returning to work resume
FAANGPath prints skills directly under the summary and before work experience, so a technical reader sees current languages and cloud tools before the four-year break. It is a minimal, centred black and grey layout aimed at engineers, the field this sample returns to.
Second choice: Leslie. Leslie prints experience before skills; choose it if your pre-break jobs are the strongest part of your case and your field is not a technical one.
What goes in each section, in FAANGPath's order
FAANGPath prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Your experience level and field first, then the break in a short phrase, then what you have done recently. Name the kind of role you want, including returnships if you are applying to them.
- Skills. Put the tools you have used since the break first. Anything you last touched years ago can stay only if you would be comfortable being tested on it this month.
- Work Experience. The break sits at the top as a dated entry. Pre-break jobs follow with full titles and dates; write them in the past tense and lead with results that still matter in the field today.
- Projects. A refresher project shows you can work with today's versions of the tools. Keep it small and finished rather than large and half-built.
- Education. Degree and year. A returner has no reason to hide the graduation date; the experience carries the page.
- Certifications. A recent certification is dated proof that your knowledge is current. It prints near the end, so mention it in the summary as well.

How to make the sample yours
Update tool names and versions
Tools change during a few years away. Check that the names on your resume match what postings use now, and drop products that have been retired.
Pick a recent project you can explain in depth
Interviewers ask returners what they have built lately. One project you can walk through line by line is worth more than three tutorials.
Decide whether to name the reason for your break
A short reason (relocation, family, health) is enough, and some returners write just "Career break". Both are honest; choose what you are comfortable expanding on in an interview.
Adapt it for a non-technical field
A returning marketing manager or nurse would swap the tools row for their field's methods and credentials, and might prefer Leslie, which puts past experience ahead of skills.
Reconnect with former managers
People who supervised you before the break make good references. Contact them before you apply, since their jobs and contact details may have changed.
Keywords to keep where they are true
Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

- Python
- Java
- REST APIs
- PostgreSQL
- Docker
- AWS
- CI/CD

Mistakes to avoid
- Hiding the break by listing only years or leaving your last job open-ended. A clear break entry is stronger than a timeline that does not add up.
- Listing outdated tools as current skills. If you have not used one in years and would not pass a quick test, remove it or move it down.
- Underselling the pre-break career. Those years still count; write them with the weight you would have given them then.
- Padding the break entry with household tasks to make it look like a job.
How the sample PDF reads in text extractors
We exported this sample with Resumity's PDF exporter in Chrome on 2026-10-29 and read the file back with three open-source text extractors. This shows whether software that turns a PDF into text can recover it; it is not a test of any commercial applicant tracking system. How we test templates.
| Extractor | Name, email, phone | Headings | Bullets intact |
|---|---|---|---|
| pdf.js 4.10.38 | All found | 6 of 6 | 10 of 10 |
| pdftotext (Xpdf) 4.00 | All found | 6 of 6 | 10 of 10 |

Frequently asked questions
What is a returnship?
A fixed-term, paid role for people coming back after a career break, with support such as training or coaching. UK government guidance for employers describes returnships this way, and National Highways, for example, runs a six-month programme for people with a break of two years or more. Apply with the same resume.
How do I explain a long career break on a resume?
With a dated entry in your work history, a short reason in plain words and bullets for anything you did that relates to the job. Keep the explanation itself for the cover letter.
Should my work history start with the break?
Yes, because it is the most recent period. In FAANGPath the summary and skills above it already show what you offer, so the break is not the first thing a reader meets.
How far back should a returner's resume go?
Keep the jobs that show your level and field, usually the ten to fifteen years of work before the break. Older entries can be cut to a line or dropped.
Will applicant tracking systems read this FAANGPath PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 6 section headings and all 10 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
