Resume template for returning to work after caregiving
Short answer
Henrietta handles a caregiving return well: the summary states the break and that it has ended, then your history runs on with a dated caregiver entry at the top. Its conventional business look keeps the focus on the work before the break. The fictional sample is a payroll and HR administrator returning after three years caring for a parent, with a recent payroll certification.

Why Henrietta suits a returning after caregiving resume
Henrietta prints the summary first and then work experience, so the line saying your caregiving has ended is read before the dated break entry. Its plain black and grey business layout suits office and HR roles like the one in the sample, and education follows the jobs with no skills list in between.
Second choice: Meridian. Meridian prints skills above experience; choose it if refreshed skills are a bigger part of your case than the jobs before the break.
What goes in each section, in Henrietta's order
Henrietta prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Experience first, then one sentence on the caregiving break that says it has ended or is now covered, so a reader knows you can commit to the hours. Finish with when you can start.
- Work Experience. A dated "Career break: family caregiver" entry goes at the top. Bullets are optional; add one or two only if the tasks match the job (scheduling, insurance paperwork, managing a budget), in plain terms.
- Education. Degree, school and year. Henrietta prints it right after your jobs, so an older degree sits in its natural place without drawing attention.
- Skills. Lead with systems you have used recently or retrained on. For anything you have not touched since before the break, ask whether you could use it on day one; if not, refresh it before listing it.
- Certifications. A certification earned during or just after the break shows your knowledge is current. It prints near the end of the page, so the summary names it too.

How to make the sample yours
Decide how much to say about whom you cared for
"Family caregiver" or "caring for a parent" is enough. You never need to name the illness, and you can leave out the relationship altogether.
Make it clear the caregiving has ended or is covered
Employers may wonder about availability. One phrase in the summary, such as "a role that has now ended" or "now shared with other family members", settles it without detail.
Add transferable bullets only when true and relevant
Coordinating several providers, handling insurance appeals or running household finances can support an admin or HR application. Leave them out for roles where they do not apply.
Catch up on rule changes in your field
Payroll, HR, nursing and accounting rules change over a few years. A short update course before applying lets you talk about the current rules in an interview.
Keep the pre-break jobs at full strength
Three years away does not cancel nine years of work. Keep three or four results-based bullets for your last job and two for the one before.
Keywords to keep where they are true

Mistakes to avoid
- Sharing medical details about the person you cared for. Their privacy matters as much as yours.
- Leaving three years blank. A dated caregiver line is quicker to read than whatever a reader would guess instead.
- Giving the caregiving a job title such as "Home Health Manager" when you were not employed in that role.
- A summary that is vague about availability, which invites a screening question you could have answered on the page.

Frequently asked questions
How do I list caregiving on my resume?
As a dated entry in your work history, titled "Career break: family caregiver" or similar, placed in date order. Add bullets only for tasks that relate to the job you want.
Should I say who I was caring for?
Only as much as you are comfortable with. "Caring for a parent" or simply "family caregiving" both work; the illness and other details stay private.
Can caregiving count as work experience?
It was unpaid, so keep it in a career break entry rather than presenting it as a job. The skills it built, such as coordination, paperwork and budgeting, can still be described there.
What if I am still caregiving but ready for part-time work?
Keep the break entry open with "Present" and apply for part-time roles. Raise the hours you can work with the recruiter or in the application form rather than on the resume.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Henrietta PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
