Reverse chronological resume template with a worked sample
Short answer
A reverse chronological resume lists jobs newest first, and Henrietta prints its sections in the classic order for it: summary, then work experience, education and skills. The fictional sample is a warehouse supervisor who moved from associate to shift lead to supervisor over nine years. Enter your current job at the top of the experience section and work backwards from there.

Why Henrietta suits a reverse chronological resume
Henrietta prints work experience immediately after the summary, then education, then skills: the textbook chronological order. In plain black and grey with a left-aligned name, it lets a run of dated jobs, newest first, read top to bottom as one clear line of progression.
Second choice: Catalyst. Catalyst is even more strictly chronological: it prints no summary, so the page opens directly on your current job, under a large name with teal headings.
What goes in each section, in Henrietta's order
Henrietta prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Sum up the arc in two sentences: where you started, where you are now, and the size of what you run. The dated entries below will prove it.
- Work Experience. Newest first, every entry with month and year. When you were promoted at one employer, give each title its own entry and dates so the progression shows at a glance.
- Education. Henrietta prints education after experience. A diploma plus a short logistics certificate is plenty here; the work history is the main evidence.
- Skills. The three-column grid drops the group labels, so make the first group your operational skills and the second your systems; the left column is seen first.

How to make the sample yours
Enter jobs newest first
Your current role goes at the top, then each earlier role in turn. Check every end date against the next start date before you send it.
Split promotions into separate entries
Shift Lead and Operations Supervisor at the same center are two entries in the sample. Repeating the employer name is fine; the change of title is the story.
Explain longer gaps in one line
A gap of a few months needs no comment. For a longer one, add a short entry such as "Family care, 03/2020 to 11/2020" rather than leaving the reader to guess.
Shorten the oldest jobs
Give the earliest role one or two bullets. Anything more than about fifteen years old can go unless it explains a skill you use now.
Keep one date format
MM/YYYY throughout. In a chronological resume, dates are read almost as closely as job titles, so inconsistency shows.
Keywords to keep where they are true
Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.
- warehouse operations
- shift supervision
- inventory control
- cycle counting
- pick accuracy
- warehouse management system
- RF scanning
- forklift operation
- safety walks
- labor planning
- team leadership
- shipping and receiving
Mistakes to avoid
- Listing jobs oldest first. Readers expect your current or latest role at the top.
- Folding several titles into one entry with one set of dates, which hides your promotions.
- Leaving out months. Years alone make a three-month job and a two-year job look the same.
- Overlapping dates with no explanation. If you held two jobs at once, label one "part-time".

Frequently asked questions
What is a reverse chronological resume?
A resume that lists work experience starting with your current or most recent job and moving backwards. It puts recent work and progression first, which is what most readers check before anything else.
Is a chronological resume the same as reverse chronological?
In everyday use, yes. A "chronological resume" almost always means newest job first; an oldest-first order is rare and harder to read.
When is reverse chronological not the best choice?
When your recent jobs are unrelated to the role or you have a long gap. Then a stronger summary and skills that point at the relevant work help, while the dated history stays.
How many jobs should a chronological resume show?
Usually the last ten to fifteen years. Three or four roles cover most careers; older roles can be cut or summarized in a line.
Should promotions at the same company be listed separately?
Yes. Give each title its own dates and bullets under the same employer name, as the sample does for the shift lead and supervisor roles.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Henrietta PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 4 section headings and all 9 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
