TL;DR: foundit’s August 2026 engineering snapshot, reported this week, shows 9.5 candidates per job at 0–3 years and 5.9 overall. Bengaluru still leads hiring. Most engineering jobs sit outside IT. Your resume should prove ramp-up speed, match the industry in the posting, and stay defensible in an interview — not look like every other campus PDF.

India’s engineering market is not short of people. It is short of entry-level seats.

foundit’s Engineers’ Day 2026 analysis, built from August 2026 job postings and foundit’s talent database, was reported on 15–16 September by The Economic Times, Business Standard, and Business Today. The numbers are consistent across those write-ups.

Professionals with 0–3 years of experience are nearly 45 percent of the active engineering candidate pool and only 28 percent of jobs. At that band there are 9.5 candidates per opening. The 4–10 year band takes 54 percent of demand. Overall, foundit counted 39.59 lakh active engineering candidates against 6.68 lakh jobs — 5.9 candidates per job. The 0–3 year ratio more than halves by the 15+ year cohort (9.5 down to 4.1).

Bengaluru is still the largest individual hub: 19 percent of opportunities, 1.27 lakh jobs. Delhi-NCR 13 percent, Hyderabad 12 percent, Pune 10 percent, Chennai 9 percent, Mumbai 8 percent. Other tier-1 and tier-2 cities together hold 29 percent.

The mix is not an IT-only story. IT, software and services, and GCCs are 33 percent of engineering jobs. The other 67 percent sit in manufacturing and industrial (15 percent), construction/engineering/real estate (13 percent), and electronics, automotive/EV, and energy (26 percent combined). Computer Science/IT is near the market average at 5.8 candidates per job. Automobile/automotive is tight at about 1.1–1.2. Electronics and instrumentation is 11.5.

Tarun Sharma, foundit’s CPTO, said engineering careers are no longer defined by a single sector — the work is to evolve with where demand actually sits.

If you searched resume tips India 2026, the news is not “use a prettier template.” It is that a generic campus resume is competing at 9.5-to-1 in the band companies are least hungry for.

Three resume moves that match this week’s data

1. Write for the band firms are hiring, without inventing years.
You cannot fake a 4–10 year career. You can stop leading with duties that every graduate lists. Put internships, production projects, and shipped work above coursework. Show that someone can put you on a ticket in week two.

2. Mirror the industry in the posting, not the industry you assumed.
Two-thirds of engineering jobs are outside IT/software/GCCs. A Bengaluru software resume that only speaks SaaS will miss electronics, EV, industrial, and energy roles that use the same fundamentals. Use the posting’s domain terms only when they are true.

3. Make the first third searchable and interview-proof.
India Today (13 September 2026) told candidates to use a specific professional identity instead of the word “Resume” under their name. That helps Naukri search, LinkedIn, and parsers. Pair a precise headline with four to six skills from the posting, then bullets a recruiter can test on a screen.

Do not invent metrics. Volume is already high. Inflated numbers get you into a conversation you cannot finish.

What this report does not say

foundit did not publish an ATS rejection rate, a callback multiplier, or a “pass this checker and get hired” figure. Treat those claims elsewhere as marketing unless they name a population, sample size, timeframe, and median.

Resumity’s free ATS check does not require a sign-up. When you use Resumity’s AI, you see each suggested edit as a diff and approve it yourself. No silent rewrite. No hallucinated internship.

This week’s move is one resume, one real job description, one honest pass — not fifty identical PDFs.
