ATS resume checker for India: what Indian portals and recruiters need
Most advice about applicant tracking systems is written for American job sites. Indian applications go through different doors: a Naukri profile that recruiters search, company career portals, placement cells and plain email to HR. Indian resume habits, such as education tables, photos, declarations and a CGPA with no scale, cause problems of their own. Here is what each door needs, a checklist, a sample and a free check you can run now.
Where your resume gets read in India

Indian resume habits that trip up software
- Education as a grid (Class X, Class XII and degree in a table). Text extractors can read table cells in an odd order. Put each qualification on its own line: “Class XII (CBSE), school, 2023, 84.6%”.
- A photo in the header. Leave it off the file. Naukri itself suggests removing pictures if an upload fails and adding your photo to the profile separately.
- A “Personal Details” block (date of birth, father’s name, marital status, nationality) above your experience. A private-job resume does not need it; when a government form asks for these details, the form has its own fields.
- A scanned signature under the declaration. An image carries no text. If you keep the declaration, type it, and type your name.
- A CGPA with no scale. “8.1” could mean anything; write “CGPA 8.1/10”.
- Creative headings such as “Academic Qualifications”, “Key Skills” or “Professional Synopsis”. Plain “Education”, “Experience” and “Skills” are the safest. Our own free check may not recognise “Academic Qualifications” or “Key Skills” as those sections.
- Mixed date styles (“2022-26”, “June’25”, “01/06/2025”). Pick one, such as “Jun 2025 – Aug 2025”.
- Hindi or regional text typed in legacy fonts such as Kruti Dev. These fonts are not Unicode: software reads the text as random Latin letters. Use a Unicode font such as Mangal, Nirmala UI or Noto Sans Devanagari.
- A phone photo of a printed resume, saved as PDF. It has no text layer at all, so nothing can be read until it is retyped.

The check does not imitate Naukri or any company’s applicant tracking system. It tests the basics that every one of them depends on: whether your text and headings can be read at all. How we test our own templates is described on How we test templates.

A statistics graduate applying for data analyst trainee roles through Naukri and company portals. Every qualification sits on its own line, headings are plain, and there is no photo, table or image.
