College Student Resume Example and Writing Guide

Short answer

A college student resume is usually one page with education first: school, degree, major, expected graduation month and year, GPA if it helps, and relevant coursework. Follow with internships, part-time jobs, research and campus leadership written as action-verb bullets with results, then a skills section listing technical tools and languages.

What is the Harvard resume format, and should college students use it?

The Harvard resume format is the plain, one-column layout in the student resume sample from Harvard's Mignone Center for Career Success. The name is centered at the top over a single line of contact details, followed by four sections: Education, Experience, Leadership and Skills & Interests. Each entry puts the organization and location on the first line and the title and dates on the second, in reverse chronological order.

It works because it is easy to scan and reads cleanly in applicant tracking systems. Harvard's guidance adds rules worth copying: list headings in order of importance, describe achievements with action verbs and numbers, use specific and active language, and leave out photos, age, gender, references and personal pronouns.

Use it for internships, consulting, finance, government and graduate school applications. Design roles may expect more visual work, but they usually want a portfolio link rather than a decorated resume.

Sections for a college student resume

Lead with education until you have a full-time job after graduation. Then add the experience that best matches the posting, paid or not: internships, research, campus jobs, part-time work, student organizations and substantial class projects.

  • Education: school, degree and major, minor, expected graduation month and year, GPA with its scale, honors
  • Relevant coursework: 3 to 5 courses that match the job, not your whole transcript
  • Experience: internships, research, campus and part-time jobs, with 2 to 4 bullets each
  • Leadership and activities: officer roles, clubs, athletics, volunteering
  • Skills and interests: software, programming languages, lab techniques, languages and a few specific interests

How do you write a college resume with little experience?

Treat a demanding class project or research assignment like a job. Give it a title ("Capstone Project, Campus Food Access Study"), dates and bullets that name the method, the tools and what came out of it. MIT's career office suggests including substantial class or personal projects and says that if a role produced only one meaningful bullet, list one.

Campus jobs count even when they are unrelated to your major. A dining hall shift manager has scheduled and supervised peers; a library desk worker has served the public and kept records. Say what you were trusted with and how much: people supervised, hours a week while carrying a full course load, money handled.

Should you list GPA, coursework and high school?

List your GPA when it helps you or when the employer asks for it, and give the scale ("3.7/4.0"), as MIT recommends. Finance, consulting and many engineering employers ask for GPA in the application, so a missing GPA on the resume tends to prompt the question anyway.

Coursework belongs only when it is relevant to the job. As for high school, Harvard's undergraduate sample still lists it with honors and test scores, and MIT says first-year students may keep it. Remove it as college experience fills the page, usually by junior year.

Is a college application resume different from a college student resume?

Yes. A college application resume is written by high school students applying to colleges, scholarships or summer programs. It lists high school activities, honors, leadership, jobs and summer programs, and it supports the activities part of an application rather than a job search.

A college student resume is aimed at employers and graduate programs. Once you are enrolled, rebuild the page around college work and drop most high school items. For the admissions version, use the college application resume guide linked on this page.

Mistakes to avoid on a college student resume

  • Burying education. Students should put education first with the expected graduation date, because internship recruiters sort candidates by class year and major.
  • Listing every course. A transcript-length coursework line pushes experience off the page. Keep 3 to 5 courses that match the posting.
  • Duties instead of results. "Responsible for social media" is weaker than "Grew the club Instagram from 400 to 1,300 followers in one semester."
  • An unexplained gap. Harvard advises avoiding information gaps such as a missing summer. List a summer job, course, research project or family responsibility.
  • Personal details. Leave off photos, age, birth date and references, as Harvard's guidance advises.

Frequently asked questions

What should a college student put on a resume?

Education first (school, degree, major, expected graduation, GPA if strong), then internships, research, campus jobs and leadership roles with results-focused bullets. Finish with technical skills, languages and a few specific interests.

What is the Harvard resume format?

A one-page, single-column layout from Harvard's student resume sample: a centered name and contact line, then Education, Experience, Leadership and Skills & Interests, each in reverse chronological order. It leaves out photos, pronouns and references.

How long should a college resume be?

One page. MIT's career office says to aim for one page, or two at most if you have substantial relevant information, which is rare for undergraduates.

Should I put my GPA on my college resume?

Yes if it is strong or the employer asks for it, written with the scale, such as 3.6/4.0. You can also list a higher major GPA if you label it clearly.

Should a college resume have a summary or objective?

It is optional. The Harvard format skips it, but a two-line summary helps when you are changing fields or applying to roles your major does not obviously fit.

Do college students need a resume for on-campus jobs?

Many campus employers ask for one through the career portal. A one-page version showing your availability, any customer service work and relevant certifications is enough.
