Internship Resume Example and Writing Guide
Short answer
An internship resume should be one page with education at the top (degree, major, expected graduation date, GPA if strong and relevant coursework), followed by projects, earlier internships, part-time jobs and campus roles written as action-verb bullets with results. Add a skills section that mirrors the tools in the posting, such as Python, Excel or SolidWorks.

How do you put an internship on your resume?
List it under Experience like any job: your title ("Audit Intern", not just "Intern"), the organization, city and state (or "Remote"), the months and years, and 2 to 4 bullets on what you did and what came of it. You do not need to say whether it was paid. An unpaid internship is still experience.
Use NACE's definition as your test: an internship is a supervised learning experience with a defined beginning and end that applies classroom knowledge in a professional workplace. Co-ops, externships and summer research programs that fit that description belong in Experience too; label them accurately ("Engineering Co-op", "Summer Research Fellow").
Listing an incoming internship on your resume
Yes, once you have accepted the offer. Add it at the top of Experience with the future dates, for example "Incoming Software Engineering Intern, Brightwave Analytics, Summer 2027". Leave out bullets, or add one line naming the team if you know it.
It tells other employers and campus programs that a company has already selected you. Remove it right away if the offer is withdrawn, and replace the placeholder with real bullets after you start.
What goes on an IT or computer science internship resume?
For software roles, a Projects section often carries as much weight as experience. List 2 or 3 projects with the stack in parentheses, what the project does and a number that shows it was used or worked: users, requests handled, tests passing. Link your GitHub only if the repositories have readable README files.
For IT support and systems internships, help desk work, home labs and certifications matter more than algorithms coursework. Name the ticketing system, the operating systems, any Active Directory or Microsoft 365 admin tasks and certifications such as CompTIA A+.
What goes on an engineering or accounting internship resume?
Engineering recruiters look for hands-on design work. Student competition teams (Baja SAE, Formula SAE, Engineers Without Borders), lab and capstone projects and machine shop training show you can take a part from CAD to a test. Name the software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, MATLAB) and the result: weight saved, tolerance met, test passed.
Accounting internships, especially audit and tax roles at public accounting firms, look closely at accounting coursework, GPA and Excel. Volunteer tax preparation through the IRS VITA program, bookkeeping for a club or family business and an officer role in Beta Alpha Psi or an accounting society are the strongest additions.
What is the best resume format for an internship?
Use reverse chronological order with education first, one column and standard round bullet points. MIT's career office advises against tables, columns and graphics because they can confuse applicant tracking systems, and recommends one page with margins of about 0.5 to 0.75 inches.
Tailor the skills line and the first bullet of each entry to the posting. If the internship asks for SQL and you used it in a databases course, put SQL in your skills and describe that class project in a bullet so the keyword has proof behind it.

Mistakes to avoid on an internship resume
- Writing "Intern" with no field. Use the real title, such as "Marketing Analytics Intern", so keyword searches match it.
- Hiding education at the bottom. Internship recruiters check class year, major and graduation date first.
- Projects with no outcome. "Built a website" says little; "Built a React site for a campus club that took 140 event sign-ups" shows it worked.
- Listing tools you cannot discuss. Interviewers ask about each skill, so keep only the languages and software you could use in a technical question.
- One resume for every posting. Reorder skills and bullets to match each posting's tools and duties.
Frequently asked questions
What should an internship resume include?
Contact details, education with expected graduation date and GPA if strong, relevant coursework, experience (internships, jobs, research), a projects section for technical roles and skills that match the posting. Keep it to one page.
How do you put an internship on a resume?
List it under Experience with your specific title, the company, location, months and years, and 2 to 4 bullets with results. Paid or unpaid does not matter.
Can you put an incoming internship on your resume?
Yes, after you accept the offer. Write "Incoming [Title] Intern, Company, Summer 2027" with no bullets, and update the entry once you start.
How do I write an internship resume with no experience?
Lead with education and relevant coursework, then add class projects, campus jobs, volunteering and club roles written as bullets with results. A short objective naming the internship and your strongest skill helps fill the gap.
What is the best format for an internship resume?
A one-page, single-column, reverse chronological resume with education first and standard bullets, saved as a PDF unless the posting asks for a Word file.
Should I list relevant coursework on an internship resume?
Yes, 3 to 5 courses that match the posting, especially if you have little work experience. Drop coursework once internships and projects show the same skills.
