What should a finance resume include?

A finance resume needs scale on every line. Hiring managers want to know the size of the business, budget, portfolio or deal you worked on, what you built or analyzed and what decision followed. "Owned the forecast for a $340 million division" answers most of that in one phrase.

Order the sections as summary, experience, skills, education and certifications. Students and recent graduates put education first with GPA, relevant coursework and any student investment fund or case competition. List licenses and exams with their status and year.

  • Scope: revenue, budget or portfolio size; cost centers or companies covered
  • Work product: models, forecasts, variance analysis, investment memos, dashboards
  • Outcome: decisions supported, savings found, forecast accuracy, hours saved
  • Tools: Excel, SQL, BI, planning and ERP systems, market data platforms

What finance resume format works best?

Use reverse-chronological order in a single column, with company, title and dates on one line and bullets below. Finance readers are conservative: a plain font, consistent date alignment and no graphics or colored sidebars.

Keep it to one page for students and analysts. Investment banking and asset management resumes in particular are expected on one page, with education at the top for students. Corporate finance and FP&A resumes for experienced analysts can run to two pages if the second page is still strong.

Which skills and keywords belong on a finance resume?

Start with the posting's terms and use them where you have done the work. FP&A roles emphasize forecasting, budgeting, variance analysis and planning systems. Investment roles emphasize valuation, financial statement analysis and market data tools. Credit roles look for underwriting, covenants and cash flow analysis.

Be specific about Excel. "Advanced Excel" is on every finance resume; "three-statement models, Power Query, XLOOKUP, data tables and VBA macros" tells a manager what you can do on your first day. Add SQL and a BI tool if you use them, because many finance roles now involve pulling your own data.

How does a senior financial analyst resume differ?

Senior analysts are hired for ownership and influence. Show the plan, forecast or model you are accountable for, the leaders you advise and the decisions your analysis changed, such as a project funded, a budget cut or a price adjusted.

Add the leadership signals: analysts you train or review, planning system implementations you helped lead and processes you rebuilt, like moving the forecast from spreadsheets into Anaplan. A two-line summary at the top should state your area, the scale you work at and your strongest credential.

How do you write a finance resume with no experience?

Use what finance recruiters accept as evidence of skill and interest: a student-managed investment fund, case or stock pitch competitions, a modeling project built from real company filings and relevant coursework. Describe a stock pitch like a job bullet, with the company, the valuation method and your recommendation.

Part-time jobs count when you frame the transferable parts. Bank teller, accounting clerk and bookkeeping roles show accuracy with money and reconciliations. If you are preparing for the SIE or CFA Level I, list it with the exam date.

Mistakes to avoid on a financial analyst resume

  • Reports without decisions. "Prepared monthly reports" is the job description. Say what the report changed: a budget cut, a funded project, a corrected forecast.
  • Vague scale. Give the size of the budget, portfolio, deal or business unit. "$340 million division" tells a hiring manager the level you work at.
  • Overstating credentials. Write "CFA Level I passed" or "CFA Level II candidate," never "CFA" alone until you hold the charter. Date securities licenses, because they can lapse after you leave a sponsoring firm.
  • Generic Excel claims. "Proficient in Excel" is assumed. Name what you do in it: three-statement models, Power Query, macros, scenario tables.
  • Errors in the numbers. A mismatched figure or misplaced decimal on a finance resume undercuts the precision you are claiming. Check every number twice.

Frequently asked questions

What should I put on a financial analyst resume?

A summary naming your finance area, experience bullets that show models, forecasts and analysis and the decisions they supported, the size of budgets or portfolios you handle, a skills section with Excel, SQL and planning or ERP tools, and your degree plus any licenses or certifications with their status.

What skills should a finance resume list?

Financial modeling, forecasting, budgeting, variance analysis and valuation, plus the tools in the posting such as Excel, SQL, Power BI, Anaplan, SAP or Bloomberg. Add business partnering and communication, and prove them with bullets about presenting to leaders.

How much do financial analysts make?

The BLS reports a median pay of $103,570 per year ($49.79 per hour) for financial analysts in May 2025. It projects employment to grow 7% from 2025 to 2035, which it rates as much faster than average.

Should a finance resume be one page?

Yes for students and analysts with under about 7 years of experience, and especially for banking and investment roles. Senior analysts and managers can use two pages if every line shows scope and results.

Is the CFA worth listing if I have only passed Level I?

Yes. Write "CFA Level I passed (2025)" or "CFA Level II candidate." CFA Institute requires all three exams and 4,000 hours of relevant experience before you can use the charter, so do not put "CFA" after your name until then.

What does a senior financial analyst resume need?

Ownership: the forecast, plan or model you are accountable for, the leaders you advise, the analysts you train and the systems you helped implement. Show the decisions your analysis changed, with dollar values.

What are good finance resume keywords?

Use the terms in the posting first. Common ones include financial modeling, forecasting, budgeting, variance analysis, FP&A, DCF, valuation, KPI reporting, month-end close, SQL, Power BI and the planning system the employer uses.
