German CV format (Lebenslauf) for Indian applicants

German employers call the CV a Lebenslauf, and it is more formal than most Indian resumes: a table with dates on the left, the latest role first, gaps explained, and your signature and the date at the end. A photo is optional.

If you are applying for Germany's Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) to look for work there, the German Mission in India lists a CV among the visa documents, so the same CV does two jobs. Sources are linked and were checked on 12 October 2026.

Indian resume vs German CV (Lebenslauf)

"Source" means we read it on an official or institutional page; "Common practice" means it is a convention, not a rule, so judge it against the job ad.

What to change in your Indian resume

  1. Switch to the tabular layout. Dates as MM/YYYY in a narrow left column ("04/2022 - today"), then role, employer, city, and two or three short lines of what you did.
  2. Keep the signature, drop the declaration. Indian resumes often end with a declaration, place, date and signature. In Germany keep the place, date and signature; the sentence above them goes.
  3. Name your language levels and certificates. For example "German: A2 (Goethe-Zertifikat)". The German Mission's Opportunity Card checklist accepts German certificates from the Goethe-Institut or ÖSD and English certificates with the ALTE Q-mark.
  4. Add your recognition status. If your degree and university are listed in the anabin database, or you have a Statement of Comparability from the ZAB, say so on the education line.
  5. Explain gaps in one line. A gap of a few months with no explanation invites a question. "01/2024 - 04/2024: German course (A1 to A2), Pune" answers it.

The Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte): where your CV fits

The Opportunity Card is a German visa for looking for work in Germany without a job offer. The German Embassy in Bern describes two routes: your qualification is fully recognised in Germany, or (option 2) you have a degree or at least two years of vocational training recognised in the country where you earned it, German at level A1 or English at level B2, and a minimum of six points in the points system. It asks for at least €1,091 a month, €13,092 for the standard 12 months. (German Embassy Bern (Federal Foreign Office))

The German Mission in India's checklist lists a curriculum vitae among the documents, along with a duly signed motivational letter that says what work you want to do in Germany, whether and since when you have been learning German, where you have already applied, and why Germany rather than another EU country. (German Mission in India)

Make the two tell the same story: the role in your CV's first lines should be the work your letter names, and the German course you mention should appear in the CV with its level. For recognition, the checklist asks for anabin database printouts listing your degree and university or a Statement of Comparability, or, on option 2, a confirmation from the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB); for vocational training it points to anerkennung-in-deutschland.de. While you search, the checklist allows work of up to 20 hours a week on average and trial work of up to two weeks.

The checklist PDF is marked "Last updated: September 2024" and amounts change, so check the current version before you apply. The EU's Europass CV builder is another way to build a CV, in 31 languages.

Check the file before you send it

Whatever the country, the first reader is often software that has to pull the text out of your PDF. The free check reads your PDF in your browser (the file is not uploaded) and shows whether your name, email, phone, section headings and dates can be found. It doesn't judge country conventions; use the table above for those. Resumity's 7 templates are free, single-column, and export to PDF and DOCX.
