Country guide for Indian applicants · Sources checked 12 October 2026
Canadian resume format for Indian applicants
Canadian employers expect a short resume, not a biodata: at most two pages, no photo, and none of the personal details many Indian resumes carry. Job Bank, the Government of Canada's job site, spells most of this out, so for Canada more of this guide rests on official guidance than on habit.
Below: what to change, a sample section, and where an educational credential assessment fits if you are applying through Express Entry. Sources were checked on 12 October 2026.
Indian resume vs Canadian resume
"Source" means we read it on an official or institutional page; "Common practice" means it is a convention, not a rule, so judge it against the job ad.
| What | Typical Indian resume | Canadian resume | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Length | One to three pages | Two pages at most. Job Bank: "Limit your resume to two pages." | Source: Job Bank |
| Photo | Often included | Leave it off. Job Bank: "it is not the norm in Canada." | Source: Job Bank |
| Personal details | Date of birth, father's name, marital status, religion, nationality | Name, city and province (or your current city), phone, email, LinkedIn. Job Bank says to leave out personal details such as age, weight, height and marital status, and never to include your Social Insurance Number. | Source: Job Bank |
| Voice | "I am a hard-working professional…" | Job Bank: do not use "I", "my" or "me"; write as if someone else were describing you. Start bullets with a verb. | Source: Job Bank |
| Bullets | Duty lists, sometimes in paragraphs | Achievements with numbers, about 5 to 7 bullets per section, as Job Bank suggests. | Source: Job Bank |
| Hobbies | Often listed | Usually left out. Job Bank: "It is not recommended to mention hobbies because of the judgments potential employers can make." | Source: Job Bank |
| References | Listed with phone numbers, or "available on request" | Job Bank: "Keep references on a separate sheet and provide them only when they are specifically requested." | Source: Job Bank |
| Declaration | "I hereby declare…" with place, date and signature | Not used. Remove it. | Common practice |
What to change in your Indian resume
- Strip the personal block. Photo, date of birth, marital status, father's name, religion, nationality and passport number all go. Never add a Social Insurance Number.
- Delete the declaration and CTC. Remove "I hereby declare…", the signature, and current or expected CTC. Pay comes up later in the process.
- Turn duties into achievements. "Responsible for MIS reports" becomes "Automated the weekly MIS report in SQL, cutting preparation from 2 days to 3 hours". Keep each section to about 5 to 7 bullets.
- Explain Indian qualifications. Write "Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com), University of Mumbai". If you have an ECA, you can add the assessing organization and year on the education line.
- Say where you are and your status. Common practice, not a rule: "Toronto, ON" if you are there, or "Pune, India (moving to Toronto, January 2027)". If you already hold permanent residence or a work permit, one line saying so answers an early question.

If you are using Express Entry: credential assessment
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada says that if you completed your education outside Canada, you need an educational credential assessment (ECA) to be the principal applicant under the Federal Skilled Worker Program or to earn points for that education. It must come from an organization or professional body designated by IRCC, and it must be less than 5 years old when you complete your Express Entry profile and when you apply. (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (Canada.ca))
The ECA is for immigration; employers read your resume. Once you have one, a short line on your resume's education section, like the sample above, saves an employer guessing how your Indian degree compares.
Check the file before you send it
Whatever the country, the first reader is often software that has to pull the text out of your PDF. The free check reads your PDF in your browser (the file is not uploaded) and shows whether your name, email, phone, section headings and dates can be found. It doesn't judge country conventions; use the table above for those. Resumity's 7 templates are free, single-column, and export to PDF and DOCX.
