Resume template for medical school graduates and students

Short answer

Henrietta suits a medical school resume because it prints education straight after experience: the M.D. entry with USMLE results sits right under one short research job, followed by skills, research projects, certifications and a titled list of clerkships. The fictional sample finished an M.D. in 2026 and is spending a research year before residency. Residency applications through ERAS use their own form, so this resume covers the other requests.

Why Henrietta suits a medical school (M.D.) resume

Henrietta prints education immediately after experience, so the M.D. entry and USMLE results sit directly below a single research fellowship instead of under skills and projects; a student with no jobs gets the degree right under the summary. The plain black and grey layout and unlabelled skills grid keep a clinical page sober.

Second choice: Meridian. Meridian prints skills and research projects ahead of education; choose it once your research output outweighs your medical school record.

Henrietta template details and test results

What goes in each section, in Henrietta's order

Henrietta prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Give the M.D. year, the specialty you are pursuing and the facts a reader checks first: exam results and clerkship honors. End with what you are applying for, because the same graduate may want a research post, a scholarship or a mentor's referral.
  2. Work Experience. A postgraduate research year, or a paid job before medical school, goes here with the division or employer and what you ran yourself. Three or four bullets are enough, so the M.D. entry just below stays in view.
  3. Education. The M.D. with its month (or "Expected" while you are still enrolled), then USMLE results in the detail line. Step 1 is reported only as pass or fail for exams taken on or after January 26, 2022, while Step 2 CK has a three-digit score, so write each as it was reported.
  4. Skills. Clinical skills a supervisor can watch you do, the EHR you have charted in, research software and your clinical language level. Henrietta shows them in an unlabelled grid, so start with the clinical skills.
  5. Projects. Each research project gets the question, the department, your role and its output: abstract, poster or manuscript status. A paper counts as published only once it has been accepted.
  6. Certifications. BLS and ACLS with the issuing body and year. Renew before a card lapses; an expired date on the page looks careless to a program coordinator.
  7. Clinical clerkships. Clerkships go in their own titled list with specialty, grade, length and site. Henrietta prints this list last, so repeat your strongest clerkship grades in the summary.

How to make the sample yours

Know which applications use this resume

MyERAS asks residency applicants for up to 10 experiences in its own form, each with a 750-character description. Use this resume for research positions, away rotations, scholarships and mentors who ask for one.

Report exam results exactly as issued

Write "Step 1: Pass" with the year rather than a number, and add Step 2 CK as its three-digit score once it arrives. Leave out practice test scores entirely.

Still in medical school? Leave Work Experience empty

With no jobs listed, Henrietta prints the M.D. entry, marked "Expected" with the month, directly under the summary. Put lab work under Projects and clerkships in the titled list, as the sample does.

Trim premedical activities by the third year

College clubs and shadowing hours can go. Keep long-running service, such as a free clinic, and anything you led.

Shorten the clerkship list once residency starts

Training in residency replaces medical school rotations as your clinical record. Keep the sub-internship and any honors; the rest of the list can go.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • Doctor of Medicine
  • clinical research fellow
  • USMLE Step 1
  • USMLE Step 2 CK
  • clinical clerkships
  • sub-internship
  • internal medicine
  • outcomes research
  • chart review
  • REDCap
  • poster presentation
  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • medical Spanish

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing a remembered or estimated Step 1 number for an exam that was reported pass or fail.
  • Listing every shadowing day and premedical club. By the clinical years they crowd out research and clerkships.
  • Calling a submitted manuscript published or in press before it is accepted.
  • Any patient detail in a research or clinical bullet, even with the name removed.

Frequently asked questions

Do medical students need a resume or a CV?

Requests use both words. For research positions and away rotations, a resume-style CV like this sample works; residency programs read your ERAS application instead.

How do I list USMLE scores on a resume?

In the M.D. entry: "USMLE Step 1: Pass (2025). USMLE Step 2 CK: 251 (2026)." Step 1 results are pass or fail for exams taken on or after January 26, 2022, so there is no number to give.

Should I keep premed activities on my resume?

Only the ones you continued in medical school or that show leadership. A first-year student can keep more; a fourth-year student should keep very few.

How long should a medical student resume be?

One page for most first- and second-year students. Two pages is reasonable once research and clerkships fill the first.

Where do research publications go?

Under each research project, as the sample does with its poster and its manuscript under review. Give every item its real status.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Henrietta PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 7 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
