Resume template for nursing school graduates
Short answer
Leslie suits a new nursing graduate who already works in patient care: the summary carries the BSN and the NCLEX-RN date, the patient care technician job prints next, then clinical skills, the degree and a titled list of clinical rotations. The fictional sample finished a BSN in August 2026, sits the NCLEX-RN in November and is applying to new graduate residency programs.

Why Leslie suits a nursing school resume
Leslie puts work experience directly under the summary, so a paid patient care technician job, the strongest proof a new graduate can offer, is read before the skills and degree. Its single touch of blue in the centred header looks finished while the rest of the page stays plain.
Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta prints the BSN straight after the job and fits short clinical skills into a three-column grid; choose it if you have no healthcare job and the degree leads.
What goes in each section, in Leslie's order
Leslie prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Open with the graduation month and your NCLEX-RN status, because a recruiter cannot place a new graduate without them. Passing the NCLEX is usually the last step in licensure, so change this line the day your result arrives.
- Work Experience. A paid patient care technician, CNA or unit secretary job is your best evidence. Give the unit type and patient load as a working nurse would, and keep tasks inside the scope you actually had.
- Skills. Leslie prints labelled rows: clinical skills under Technical, the EHR and monitors under Tools. Mark anything you have done only under supervision, such as medication administration, honestly.
- Education. BSN or ADN with the month you finished ("Expected" while still enrolled), then GPA if strong, the preceptorship unit and hours, and any evidence-based practice project. The full list of nursing courses can stay off.
- Certifications. BLS with the issuer and year, plus a CNA or other credential you hold now. Once the board issues your RN license, it goes here with the state and into the headline.
- Clinical rotations. Clinical rotations print last as a titled list: specialty, site and hours. Keep the preceptorship in education and the summary too, since it is your longest placement and the closest to the job.

How to make the sample yours
Change the status line after the exam
Before the NCLEX-RN, say when you plan to test. After you pass and your license is issued, change the headline to "BSN, RN" and add the license and its state to certifications.
Order rotations by the unit you want
Applying to labor and delivery? Put the obstetrics rotation first and add a few words on what you did there.
ADN graduates use the same structure
List the associate degree in nursing with the college and month, and add an RN-to-BSN program as "in progress" only once you have enrolled.
Keep patient-facing jobs, trim the rest
Retail or restaurant work from before nursing school can shrink to one line or go. Any job with patients or residents stays.
Describe the preceptorship like a short job
Give the unit, the hours, the patient assignment you carried by the end and one thing you learned to manage on your own with your preceptor in the background.

Mistakes to avoid
- Putting "RN" in the headline before your license is issued. Use "BSN, NCLEX-RN scheduled" or "BSN student" until then.
- Copying the nursing curriculum into the education entry. Recruiters know what a BSN covers; rotations and the preceptorship say more.
- Describing the patient care job in one vague line. Unit type, patient load and the tasks you were trusted with all count.
- Patient identifiers in any bullet, including room numbers or rare diagnoses tied to a date.

Frequently asked questions
How do I list clinical rotations on a nursing resume?
In a titled list with the specialty, the facility and the hours, the most relevant first. Repeat the preceptorship in your education entry.
How do I show NCLEX status before I pass?
Say when you will test: "NCLEX-RN scheduled for 11/2026". Once you pass and are licensed, replace it with the license and the state that issued it.
Should I include my CNA job on a nursing resume?
Yes. Paid patient care is some of the best evidence a new graduate has. Give the setting and what you did each shift.
How long should a nursing student resume be?
One page. A healthcare job, skills, the degree, certifications and a rotation list fit with room to spare.
Should I put my nursing school GPA on my resume?
If it is 3.5 or higher, or the residency program asks for it. Otherwise leave it off and let rotations and work carry the page.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Leslie PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 6 section headings and all 6 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
