Resume template for a scholarship application

Short answer

Henrietta suits a scholarship resume: after a short summary and any job, it prints your grades and courses straight away, then skills, a service project and a titled list of honors. The fictional sample is a high school senior applying for community foundation scholarships, with a grocery job, a 3.9 GPA, a tutoring program she founded and four awards. College students can use the same structure.

Why Henrietta suits a scholarship application resume

Henrietta prints education immediately after experience, so a committee scoring academics finds the GPA, class rank and AP courses near the top, right under the part-time job that shows responsibility. Its conventional black and grey look reads as serious, and the honors list closes the page.

Second choice: Leslie. Leslie also puts the job first but prints skills before education; choose it if your work record and skills make a stronger case than your grades.

What goes in each section, in Henrietta's order

Henrietta prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Two or three sentences matched to the scholarship's purpose: your grade, your college plans and the one commitment the committee should remember. If the award is for service, lead with service; if it is for a field of study, lead with that field.
  2. Work Experience. A part-time job tells a committee you manage time and money. Give the weekly hours alongside school and one bullet on any extra responsibility you were given.
  3. Education. School, expected graduation, GPA with its scale, class rank if your school reports it, and the advanced courses linked to your planned major. Test scores belong here only when the scholarship asks for them.
  4. Skills. Brief: languages, software and anything you can teach. Henrietta shows an unlabelled grid, so the skill most relevant to the award goes first.
  5. Projects. A service project you started or led is often the strongest item a student has. Say why it began, how many people took part or were helped and how long it has run.
  6. Honors and awards. Honors and awards print last. Give each its level (school, district, state) and year, and stop at four or five.

How to make the sample yours

Read the award criteria before editing

Underline the words in the scholarship description (leadership, service, financial responsibility, a field of study) and make sure each one has evidence somewhere on the page.

Give hours and years for every activity

Committees compare commitment. "Tutor, 3 hours a week since 09/2025" lets them do that; "tutor" on its own does not.

Keep personal circumstances for the essay

The resume lists what you did. If your circumstances matter to the award, the essay or a short-answer question is the place to explain them.

Keep a master copy and trim per award

Hold every activity in one master file, then cut to one page for each application, moving the items that match that award to the top of each section.

In college? Swap the school details

Replace high school with your college, major and expected graduation, drop high school awards after your first year and add research or campus jobs.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • class rank
  • AP courses
  • community service
  • volunteer hours
  • leadership
  • peer tutoring
  • part-time job
  • honor roll
  • National Honor Society
  • intended major

Mistakes to avoid

  • Padding the honors list with every participation certificate. Four meaningful awards outweigh twelve small ones.
  • Inflating hours or titles. Anything on the page can be checked with your counselor or the organization involved.
  • Leaving out a job because it seems ordinary. Fifteen hours a week at a grocery store alongside AP classes shows exactly the time management committees ask about.
  • Running to two pages as a high school senior. Everything a committee needs fits on one.

Frequently asked questions

What should a scholarship resume include?

Your school and grades, jobs, service, leadership, a few skills and your honors, each with dates. Within each section, put the items that match the scholarship's criteria first.

How long should a scholarship resume be?

One page for a high school student. College students with research or several jobs can usually still fit on one.

Should I put my SAT or ACT score on a scholarship resume?

Only if the scholarship asks for it or the score is a clear strength. It goes in the education entry, next to the GPA.

How is a scholarship resume different from a job resume?

It gives more room to grades, service and honors and less to job duties. The committee is judging you as a student and a member of your community, not filling a shift.

Should I include volunteer hours?

Yes. Weekly hours and dates turn a list of activities into evidence of commitment.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Henrietta PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 6 section headings and all 6 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
