Teaching CV template for college instructors
Short answer
Leslie suits a teaching CV for college instructor jobs: courses taught print first as experience, then teaching skills, then the graduate degree that qualifies you. The fictional sample is an adjunct English instructor at two colleges with an M.A., applying for a full-time community college post. It is a resume-style teaching CV; a full academic CV for research posts is a separate page.

Why Leslie suits a teaching CV resume
Leslie prints work experience straight after the summary and ahead of skills and education, so a hiring committee sees each college, course and section count first, which is the core of a teaching application. The centred blue header adds one touch of colour to an otherwise plain page.
Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta prints education immediately after experience; choose it when your degree or graduate credits in the discipline are the deciding qualification.
What goes in each section, in Leslie's order
Leslie prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Give your discipline, years of college teaching, the levels you teach (developmental, first-year, upper-level) and the modes: in person, online, hybrid. End with the position you are applying for.
- Work Experience. One entry per institution with your title and dates, then courses by number and title, how many sections and roughly how many students. Add a bullet on course design, assessment or student support you led.
- Skills. Teaching methods, learning management systems and accessibility practice in labelled rows. Leslie prints a dot after each label, so keep each row short.
- Education. Graduate degree first with the discipline and thesis title, then the bachelor's. If your master's is in another field, list the graduate credit hours you hold in the subject you teach; HLC's faculty guidelines, for example, look for 18.
- Certifications. An online teaching certificate or a pedagogy course from a faculty development center goes here with the provider and year.
- Professional development and service. Professional development, conference talks on teaching and committee service print last under one title. Keep to items from the last five years.

How to make the sample yours
Write courses the way the catalog does
Use the number and title, such as "ENGL 101: Composition I", so a committee can match your experience to its own schedule. Add the number of sections taught.
Summarize evaluations in one line
A line such as "student evaluations above the department average for four terms" works if it is true and you can produce the reports. Leave quoted student comments for a teaching portfolio.
Keep the teaching philosophy separate
Applications usually ask for a teaching statement as its own document. The CV lists what you taught and built; the statement explains why.
Mark online and hybrid sections
Committees hiring for online sections look for proof you have taught that way. Label those sections and name the learning management system.
Applying to K-12 schools instead?
A school teaching application centres on your state teaching license and student teaching rather than college courses. The teacher resume guide linked below covers it.
Keywords to keep where they are true
Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.
- college teaching
- adjunct instructor
- first-year composition
- course design
- learning outcomes
- writing assessment
- Canvas
- online teaching
- hybrid courses
- accessibility
- open educational resources
- student success
- graduate credit hours
Mistakes to avoid
- Listing courses by internal code only. "ENGL 0990" means nothing outside your college; add the title.
- Pasting full evaluation score tables or student comments into the CV.
- A research-style publication list that crowds out teaching. For a teaching post, one or two talks on teaching are enough.
- Merging several adjunct jobs into one entry. List each college separately with its own dates; overlap is normal for adjunct work.

Frequently asked questions
What is a teaching CV?
A CV built around teaching: institutions, courses, sections, course design and professional development, with your degrees. It is shorter and more focused than a research CV.
How do I list adjunct teaching at several colleges?
One entry per college, each with its own dates and courses. Overlapping dates are normal for adjunct work and need no explanation.
Should I include student evaluation scores?
A one-line summary is fine if you can back it up. Full score tables and quoted comments belong in a teaching portfolio, if the application asks for one.
What degree do I need to teach at a community college?
It varies by college and subject. For general education courses, HLC's faculty guidelines look for a master's or higher in the discipline, or a master's in another field plus 18 graduate credit hours in the subject; occupational courses can differ.
How long should a teaching CV be?
Usually one to two pages. Cut older workshops before you cut courses taught.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Leslie PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 6 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
