Entry level resume template

Short answer

Meridian suits an entry-level resume because it prints skills straight under the summary, ahead of a work history that is still short. The fictional sample is a help desk technician ten months into a first IT job, with an earlier retail electronics role retold in support terms, a home lab project and the CompTIA A+ named in the headline. Everything fits on one page.

Why Meridian suits an entry level resume

Meridian prints skills directly after the summary and before work experience, so the tools a help desk posting names (Active Directory, the Microsoft 365 admin center, a ticketing system) are read before a work history of under a year. It uses grey rules and no colour, which keeps a short one-page resume looking finished rather than sparse.

Second choice: Leslie. Leslie prints work experience before skills; switch to it once your first job in the field has more to show than your tool list.

Meridian template details and test results

What goes in each section, in Meridian's order

Meridian prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Two or three lines: the job you hold or want, how long you have done it, and the credential that got you in. At entry level the summary can also connect an earlier, unrelated job to the new field, as the sample does with setting up devices in retail.
  2. Skills. An entry-level reader checks this block early, so separate what you can do (password resets, imaging laptops) from the software you did it in. List a tool only if you have used it at work, in a course lab or in your own lab, because a phone screen will test it.
  3. Work Experience. Every job, most recent first: a short history has no room for gaps. The current role gets four bullets with ticket volumes or turnaround times; the older job is retold in the language of the new one instead of a list of shelf and till duties.
  4. Projects. A home lab, a course build or a volunteer setup shows skills your first employer has not handed you yet. One project with three concrete steps is enough, labelled honestly as personal work.
  5. Education. A certificate program, diploma or partial degree with the finish date and three course names. Readers want to know the training exists; once you hold a job in the field, nobody asks for grades.
  6. Certifications. If help desk postings near you ask for CompTIA A+ or a similar credential, show it twice: here with the issuer and year, and in the headline, because Meridian prints certifications near the end of the page.

How to make the sample yours

Use your real ticket numbers

The sample says about 35 tickets a day. Pull your own figures from the ticketing system or a weekly report; if you have none, describe the mix of requests you handle (accounts, printers, VPN, new starters).

Retell your earlier job for the new field

A cook, a cashier or a warehouse picker still dealt with customers, deadlines or equipment. Keep the two bullets a support lead would recognise and drop the rest.

Keep the lab only if you can talk about it

Interviewers for first IT jobs like to ask how a lab was built. If yours is a single virtual machine, say so; a small project you can explain beats an impressive one you cannot.

Name the systems you actually used

Postings name specific products: Jira Service Management, Freshservice, ServiceNow, Active Directory, Entra ID. Replace the sample tools with yours, spelled the way the vendor spells them.

Change the field, keep the shape

An entry-level medical biller or logistics coordinator can use the same structure: the credential in the headline, skills the posting names, one job with numbers and one older job retold.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • help desk
  • Tier 1 support
  • ticketing system
  • Active Directory
  • password resets
  • Microsoft 365
  • Windows 11
  • device imaging
  • troubleshooting
  • remote support
  • customer service
  • knowledge base
  • CompTIA A+

Mistakes to avoid

  • Calling yourself an "IT professional with extensive experience" ten months into a first job. State the time plainly; entry-level roles are filled with people at exactly that stage.
  • Deleting the earlier non-IT job. Without it the page shows a gap, and it is evidence that you can handle customers.
  • Listing every programming language from an online course. A help desk reader wants the tools of the job, and padding hides the skills that matter.
  • Stretching the page to two. A history of a year or two fits on one page with space left.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as entry level on a resume?

Roughly the first year or two in a field, whether you arrived from school, another kind of job or a training course. The page is built around early results and the skills you can prove, not a long record.

Should an entry-level resume include jobs from another field?

Yes. Keep them, most recent first, and rewrite one or two bullets in terms the new employer cares about. Leaving them out creates a gap and hides proof that you can hold down a job.

How do I write an entry-level resume summary?

Name the role, how long you have done it or what training you finished, and one strength you can prove further down the page. Skip lines about passion or being eager to learn.

Do I need a certification for an entry-level job?

Only if postings in your field ask for one. Where they do, list it with the issuer and year and mention it in the headline so it is not missed.

When does a resume stop being entry level?

When your work in the field fills the page on its own, often after two or three years. At that point the jobs carry the page and the training shrinks to a single line.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Meridian PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 6 section headings and all 10 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
