Mid-level resume template for experienced professionals

Short answer

Leslie suits a mid-level resume: a short summary names your specialty, then work experience follows before skills, so seven or so years of results do the persuading. The fictional sample is an HR generalist with three employers, the newest given five bullets and the oldest cut to two, and a SHRM-CP credential named in the headline. It stays on one page.

Why Leslie suits a mid level resume

Leslie prints a summary and then goes straight to work experience, with skills after it, which is the right weight for someone whose jobs now prove more than any list could. The centred blue header and short blue heading underlines add a single touch of colour, enough to look current without looking designed.

Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta keeps the same summary-then-experience opening in plain black and grey, for fields where a strictly conventional page is the norm.

Leslie template details and test results

What goes in each section, in Leslie's order

Leslie prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. By mid-level the summary is a specialty statement rather than a wish: the kind of work you do, the setting and size you do it in, and one result. "HR generalist for multi-site employers of 300 to 600 people" tells a recruiter where you fit before they reach the jobs.
  2. Work Experience. Give the current role the most space and the oldest the least. Bullets should show processes you run end to end (an investigation, an open enrollment, a policy rollout) rather than tasks you helped with, and name the size: headcount supported, sites, cases a year.
  3. Skills. Leslie prints labelled rows after the jobs, so this section confirms rather than introduces. Keep the HR systems and practice areas a posting names; drop anything every candidate at your level has, such as word processing.
  4. Education. One line now: degree, school and year, or the degree without the year. Coursework, GPA and campus roles have done their job and can go.
  5. Certifications. If the postings you target list a professional credential, Leslie still prints this section last, so repeat the credential in the headline after your title, as the sample does with SHRM-CP. Give the full name and issuer here.

How to make the sample yours

Rewrite the summary around your specialty

Swap the HR generalist line for your own niche: a payroll lead for unionized sites, a marketing specialist for B2B software, a civil designer for water projects. Specific beats broad at this stage.

Cut the oldest job to two lines

Seven years in, your first role is context, not evidence. Keep the title, employer, dates and the one or two bullets that connect to the job you want.

Put a size on each job

The sample states how many employees and sites each role covered. Headcount, budget, case load or client count lets a reader compare your experience with their own team.

Pick one result per job a manager would repeat

A turnover drop after you rebuilt onboarding, an audit with no findings, a system migration on time. One result a hiring manager could retell to a colleague beats four duties.

Mid-career rather than mid-level?

Fifteen years in with a non-manager title, the same layout works. Let the summary say you prefer hands-on work, and trim anything older than about fifteen years to a single line.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • workplace investigations
  • onboarding
  • benefits administration
  • open enrollment

Mistakes to avoid

  • An objective statement at year seven. Readers want to know what you already do well, not what you hope to learn next.
  • Giving every job the same number of bullets. The page should get thinner the further back it goes.
  • Leaving out numbers because HR work feels hard to measure. Case volume, time to fill, headcount supported and turnover are all countable.
  • Listing a credential that has lapsed. Renew it or take it off.

Frequently asked questions

How many years of experience is mid-level?

Usually somewhere between three and ten years, though titles vary by employer and field. If you work without close supervision and have a clear specialty, you are writing a mid-level resume.

Should a mid-level resume be one page or two?

One page in most cases. Two pages become reasonable past about ten years or with several jobs that each have distinct results, as long as page two is not just older duties.

How far back should a mid-career resume go?

Roughly the last ten to fifteen years in detail. Earlier jobs can shrink to a title, employer and dates, or go entirely if they have nothing to do with the target role.

Do I still need a summary at mid-level?

It helps when your specialty is not obvious from your title, as with generalist roles. Keep it to three lines and make every claim one a bullet below supports.

Where should a professional certification go on a mid-level resume?

In its own section with the issuer and year, and in the headline after your job title if the postings you target ask for it.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Leslie PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 10 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
