Bookkeeper resume template
Short answer
Meridian suits bookkeepers because it prints labelled skill rows above the jobs, and the software you keep books in (QuickBooks Online, Xero, Gusto) is the first thing a small business asks about. The fictional sample keeps the books for 22 small-business clients, brings neglected ledgers up to date for their CPAs and runs payroll, after five years as office manager and bookkeeper at a landscaping firm.

Why Meridian suits a bookkeeper resume
Meridian puts the Technical, Tools and Soft Skills rows directly under the summary, so QuickBooks, Xero, payroll software and bank reconciliation appear before any job. The page has no colour and prints cleanly, which matters when a small-business owner prints your resume to read at the kitchen table or in the truck.
Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta leads with experience in a conventional business layout; choose it for in-house roles at larger companies.
What goes in each section, in Meridian's order
Meridian prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Years, the kind of businesses you keep books for and how many at once. Then the tasks you own end to end, such as reconciliations, payroll, sales tax or year-end packages for the tax preparer.
- Skills. Technical lists the bookkeeping work (bank reconciliation, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, sales tax, job costing). Tools names the ledgers and add-ons you use. Soft Skills can be short: explaining reports to owners, keeping deadlines across many clients.
- Work Experience. Give the number of clients or transactions, the deadline you hit (statements by the 10th) and a clean-up you did. Owners hire bookkeepers to stop worrying, so show reliability and accuracy.
- Education. A certificate, associate degree or bookkeeping course on one line. Plenty of bookkeepers have no accounting degree; the software and the track record matter more.
- Certifications. Software certifications print here, near the end. Intuit's QuickBooks Online Certification needs yearly recertification, so list the year and keep it current.

How to make the sample yours
Swap in your ledgers
QuickBooks Desktop, Xero, Wave, FreshBooks or Sage. Name the payroll provider and receipt tools too, because small businesses want someone who already knows their stack.
Give client count or volume
In-house bookkeepers can give monthly transaction volume, invoices sent or vendors paid; practice bookkeepers can give the number of clients and industries.
Show a catch-up or clean-up
Bringing months of neglected books current, untangling a misused undeposited funds account, fixing payroll liabilities. Clean-ups are common jobs and owners like to see you have done one.
For assistant roles, lead with accuracy
Bookkeeping or accounts assistant postings want data entry, invoice processing, reconciliations and filing done carefully. Put those first and keep anything about advising owners for later roles.
Mention the hand-off to the accountant
Year-end trial balances, 1099 vendor lists and adjusting entries from the CPA show you work well with the person who files the taxes.

Mistakes to avoid
- Calling yourself an accountant when you keep books; owners and recruiters treat the titles differently.
- Listing "QuickBooks" without saying Online or Desktop, or which tasks you do in it.
- Leaving out deadlines; bookkeeping is judged on reliability as much as accuracy.
- Naming clients without their permission, especially in small towns where readers know them.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a degree to work as a bookkeeper?
Usually not. Many bookkeepers come in through office or admin work and a certificate course. Show the ledgers you have kept, the software and how reliably you hit monthly deadlines.
Is a QuickBooks certification worth listing?
Yes, for roles that use QuickBooks. Intuit's FAQ describes QuickBooks Online Certification Level 1 and Level 2, with a yearly recertification window in May and June, so give the year and keep it current.
What should a bookkeeping assistant or accounts assistant resume show?
Accurate, steady processing: invoices entered, bills paid, bank lines matched, statements filed, and the software used. If the posting says accounts assistant, the same evidence applies; use the title the posting uses.
How do I show freelance bookkeeping on a resume?
List your practice as the employer, with the number of clients, their industries and the services you provide. Add one clean-up or catch-up project as proof of skill.
Should I include payroll and sales tax tasks?
Yes. Small businesses often want one person who handles books, payroll and sales tax filings, so say which you do and through which software.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Meridian PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
