FP&A analyst resume template
Short answer
Leslie suits an FP&A analyst because it prints work experience before skills, and FP&A hiring managers care most about the planning cycles you ran and who acted on your forecast. The fictional sample owns the rolling forecast for a software company, moved planning out of linked spreadsheets and writes the monthly variance pack for the CFO, after store budgeting at a retailer.

Why Leslie suits an FP&A analyst resume
Leslie prints the summary, then work experience, then labelled skill rows, so budget cycles, forecast accuracy and business partnering lead and planning software follows. That suits FP&A, where most candidates know Excel and the difference lies in the planning work itself. The centred blue header is its only colour.
Second choice: Catalyst. Catalyst starts on experience with no summary; good for a senior analyst whose current forecasting role says everything.
What goes in each section, in Leslie's order
Leslie prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Business type and size, the cycles you own (annual budget, rolling forecast, long-range plan) and the people you partner with. One sentence on a planning improvement you led makes the summary specific.
- Work Experience. Show the cycle and your part in it: forecast horizon, how often, which lines. Add variance commentary for leadership, one business-partnering example where your numbers changed a plan, and any process or system change with its time saved.
- Skills. Leslie prints labelled rows after the jobs. Technical can hold budgeting, rolling forecasts, driver-based models, headcount planning and variance analysis; Tools holds the planning platform, ERP, BI and Excel.
- Education. Finance, economics or accounting on one line. An MBA goes first if you have one.

How to make the sample yours
State what you forecast and how big it is
Revenue, opex, headcount, cash; for a $140M business or a 85-store chain. Scale and scope tell a hiring manager whether your experience fits their company.
Give forecast accuracy if you track it
Variance between forecast and actual for revenue or opex over several quarters is the cleanest proof of FP&A skill.
Show a plan your numbers changed
A hiring plan phased, a campaign budget moved, a price change modelled. One example of business partnering beats a list of meetings attended.
Name the planning platform
Adaptive, Anaplan, Pigment, Hyperion or a large Excel model. Postings often name one, and moving a team onto a new platform is worth its own bullet.
Match the business model's vocabulary
Software uses ARR, churn and CAC payback; retail uses comparable store sales and labour as a share of sales; healthcare uses volumes and payer mix. Use your own industry's terms truthfully.
Keywords to keep where they are true

Mistakes to avoid
- Describing the budget as a task ("assisted with budget") rather than a cycle you owned a part of.
- Listing every planning tool on the market when you have used one.
- Quoting board-level figures your employer would consider confidential; round or use percentages.
- Leaving out who used your forecast, which hides the business-partnering side of the job.

Frequently asked questions
How is an FP&A resume different from an accounting resume?
Accounting looks backward and gets the numbers right; FP&A looks forward and explains them. Your bullets should show forecasts, plans, scenarios and decisions, not journal entries and reconciliations.
Should I list planning software like Adaptive or Anaplan?
Yes, by name, if you build in it rather than only read reports from it. If you led a move onto a planning platform, describe it with the time saved in the cycle.
How do I show forecast accuracy on a resume?
Give a measured gap, for example "revenue forecast within 2% of actual for six quarters". If your team did not track it, describe the reforecast rhythm and the drivers you modelled instead.
Do I need a CPA or CFA for FP&A roles?
Neither is a licence requirement for FP&A work, and many analysts have neither. Some postings list one as a plus; experience with budgets, forecasts and business partners carries more weight.
How do I describe board-level work without sharing confidential numbers?
Describe your role and the decision: "built the financial section of the quarterly board deck" or "modelled three hiring scenarios for the leadership team". Leave the figures out or make them relative.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Leslie PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 4 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
