Business intelligence analyst resume template
Short answer
Meridian is the safest pick for a BI analyst: it prints Power BI, DAX and SQL in labelled skill rows before the first job, and its colourless page stays crisp when someone prints it for a panel. The fictional sample works for a grocery distributor, where her replenishment dashboard replaced an emailed spreadsheet, plus earlier reporting work at an insurer and a current Power BI certification.

Why Meridian suits a business intelligence analyst resume
Meridian places a labelled skills block (Technical, Tools, Soft Skills) above work experience. BI hiring managers usually check the reporting stack first, Power BI or Tableau, DAX, the database underneath, so having those rows at the top answers their first question. The page has no colour at all, which keeps a printed copy clean.
Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta is the more conventional business page, good for BI teams inside finance; its skills grid drops the group labels, so lead with the reporting tools.
What goes in each section, in Meridian's order
Meridian prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Say which business you report on and who reads your work: "store operations and category managers" tells the reader more than "stakeholders". Then name the tool you build in and one habit that sets you apart, such as retiring the spreadsheet each report replaces.
- Skills. Technical holds the BI craft (Power BI, DAX, Power Query, dimensional modelling, row-level security); Tools holds the platforms underneath (SQL Server, SSRS, Azure Data Factory, Excel). Keep Soft Skills to the two or three things you do with people, such as requirements sessions and training report users.
- Work Experience. For each report or model, give who opens it, how often, and what it replaced. Then add one bullet where somebody acted on a number you surfaced, one performance or refresh fix, and one piece of governance such as certified datasets or access by region.
- Education. A business, economics or analytics degree goes on one line with the year. A bootcamp or online course in SQL can sit here too if you have no degree in a related field.
- Certifications. Meridian prints this near the bottom, after education. Write the full name, Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate, with the year; it has to be renewed every 12 months, so only list it while it is current.

Renata Alves
Business Intelligence Analyst, Power BI and SQL
Kansas City, MO | renata.alves@example.com | (816) 555-0127 | linkedin.com/in/sample-renata-alves
Business intelligence analyst with five years building reports for store operations, category managers and claims teams. Designs the Power BI data model, writes the DAX and retires the spreadsheet each new report replaces.
Experience
Business Intelligence Analyst, Harvest Lane Foods, Kansas City, MO (03/2023 to Present)
- Built the store replenishment dashboard in Power BI on a star schema over SQL Server; 60 store managers open it each morning instead of an emailed Excel file.
- Rewrote 40 DAX measures around a shared date table and calculation groups, bringing the main sales model refresh from 35 to 9 minutes.
- Set up row-level security by district, so one report replaced six regional copies that had drifted apart.
- Built a shrink report with the category team that traced most short-dated write-offs to two suppliers, which led to new delivery terms.
- Run a monthly office hour teaching buyers to build their own visuals on certified datasets.
Reporting Analyst, Clearwater Mutual Insurance, Omaha, NE (06/2021 to 02/2023)
- Wrote T-SQL views behind the claims cycle-time report used in the weekly operations review.
- Moved 12 recurring Excel reports to SSRS subscriptions, saving about a day a week of manual work.
- Reconciled report totals against the finance ledger each month and documented the definitions of open and closed claims.
Education
BS, Business Analytics, Prairie State University (05/2021)
Certifications
- Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate, Microsoft (2025)
Skills
Power BI, DAX, Power Query (M), T-SQL, Dimensional modelling, Row-level security, SQL Server, SSRS, Azure Data Factory, Excel (Power Pivot), Git, Requirements sessions, Training report users, KPI definitions
How to make the sample yours
Change the tool if you build in Tableau or Looker
Swap Power BI, DAX and Power Query for Tableau calculated fields and Prep, or LookML. Update the headline, the skills rows and every bullet together so they do not contradict each other.
Count the people who open your reports
The sample says 60 store managers use the dashboard every day. Usage logs in your BI service give you this figure; it is the clearest measure of whether a report matters.
Keep one bullet where a number changed a decision
The shrink report pointed at two suppliers. Find your own example: a cost that was cut, a contract renegotiated, a target reset because your figures showed something nobody had seen.
Put your real refresh and load times in
Rewriting measures, removing unused columns and changing storage modes all show up as minutes saved. If you never timed it, describe the change without a number.
Mention metric definitions you settled
Agreeing what "open claim" or "active customer" means across teams is a large part of BI work. One line on a definition you documented shows you prevent arguments about whose number is right.
Keywords to keep where they are true
Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.
- business intelligence
- Power BI
- DAX
- Power Query
- SQL
- data modelling
- star schema
- KPI dashboards
- row-level security
- self-service analytics
- SSRS
- requirements gathering
- data validation

Mistakes to avoid
- Pasting dashboard screenshots or charts onto the resume itself. Describe the report in a bullet and show visuals in an interview.
- Counting reports built ("created 50 dashboards") without saying who used them or what they replaced.
- Writing "data engineering" for pipeline work another team owned. Say you consumed or requested the feeds.
- Leaving out the database. Power BI skills without SQL look shallow to a BI lead.
How the sample PDF reads in text extractors
We exported this sample with Resumity's PDF exporter in Chrome on 2026-10-29 and read the file back with three open-source text extractors. This shows whether software that turns a PDF into text can recover it; it is not a test of any commercial applicant tracking system. How we test templates.
| Extractor | Name, email, phone | Headings | Bullets intact |
|---|---|---|---|
| pdf.js 4.10.38 | All found | 5 of 5 | 8 of 8 |
| pdftotext (Xpdf) 4.00 | All found | 5 of 5 | 8 of 8 |
| pypdf 6.13.0 | All found | 5 of 5 | 8 of 8 |
Frequently asked questions
Can I link to my Power BI reports from a resume?
Only if they are built on public data. Publishing a work report to the web can expose company data to anyone with the link, so build a small portfolio report on an open dataset instead and link that.
Is the PL-300 certification worth putting on a BI resume?
It helps when you have little BI experience on paper or are moving in from finance or operations. Microsoft lists a 12-month renewal, done through a free online assessment, so check that yours is current before listing it.
How is a BI analyst resume different from a data analyst resume?
A BI analyst builds and maintains reporting products: models, dashboards, refresh schedules and access rules. A data analyst answers questions with one-off analysis. If you do both, let the bullets show the split.
What if my dashboards only report numbers and never change anything?
Describe the work they replaced and the time saved, and look for one occasion when a manager acted on what the report showed. Reports that nobody uses are better left off.
How much SQL should a BI analyst show?
Enough to show you can shape the data yourself: views, joins across fact and dimension tables, and checks against the source system. Name the database engine you write it in.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Meridian PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
