Customer service representative resume template

Short answer

Leslie works well for a customer service representative. It prints work experience before skills, so your employers, tenure and results come first, and its blue header adds one touch of colour to an otherwise plain page. The fictional sample is a policy service rep at an insurance company who started on a retail service desk, showing how counter experience carries over to phone and email work.

Why Leslie suits a customer service representative resume

Leslie prints work experience ahead of skills, which suits a job where the hiring decision rests on where you have served customers and how steadily. Its centred blue header and short blue underlines give the page a finished look without a colour block, and the labelled skill rows keep the systems you know apart from soft skills.

Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta is the plainer business choice, with education printed straight after experience if you have a recent degree or certificate to show.

What goes in each section, in Leslie's order

Leslie prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Two sentences: the kind of customer you serve (policyholders, shoppers, patients), the channels (phone, email, chat, in person) and one strength a supervisor would confirm, such as accuracy on billing changes.
  2. Work Experience. For each job, daily contact volume in one bullet, then what you resolved, how accurately, and anything you were trusted with beyond the queue: training new hires, taking escalations, covering for a supervisor.
  3. Skills. Systems by name (CRM, billing or policy platforms, phone software), typing speed if it is strong, then a short soft-skills row. Leslie prints experience first, so these rows back up the jobs rather than lead.
  4. Education. High school diploma, GED or college, whichever is highest. A recent certificate or course can sit here too.
  5. Recognition. A "Recognition" list works for service awards, top audit scores or customer compliments your employer recorded. Two items is plenty.

How to make the sample yours

Name your customers and their problems

The sample handles policy changes and billing questions. Replace them with what your customers actually contacted you about: orders, returns, appointments, account access.

Turn retail or restaurant work into service evidence

If your background is in stores or food service, keep it and describe the service part: returns desk, complaints, loyalty sign-ups, cash accuracy. Service employers count that experience.

Check every number against your scorecard

Audit scores, CSAT and contacts per day should match what your employer measured. If you never saw your figures, describe what you did without a number.

List systems you could open on day one

Salesforce, Zendesk, an order system, a phone platform: the ones you used confidently, not the ones you saw once in training.

Hold it to one page

Two or three jobs with three or four bullets each is enough for most service roles. Older jobs can shrink to the title, employer and dates.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • customer service
  • inbound calls
  • email and chat support
  • billing inquiries
  • account updates
  • complaint resolution
  • quality audit score
  • customer satisfaction (CSAT)
  • CRM
  • data entry accuracy
  • de-escalation
  • first contact resolution
  • cross-selling
  • typing speed

Mistakes to avoid

  • A summary built from adjectives ("friendly, hardworking, team player") with no channel, customer type or result.
  • Leaving out retail, hospitality or delivery jobs because they were "not real jobs"; they are the experience service roles hire for.
  • Claiming a typing speed you have not tested recently. Some employers test it during the interview.
  • Copying the duties from the job description as your bullets. Write what you resolved, not what the role was meant to cover.

Frequently asked questions

What should a customer service representative summary say?

Who you serve, through which channels, and one strength with proof. "Three years answering policyholder calls and emails, known for accurate billing changes" says more than a list of personality traits.

Can retail experience count on a customer service resume?

Yes. A service desk, checkout or sales floor job involves complaints, returns and accuracy under pressure. Describe those parts in your bullets and keep the job title exactly as it was.

What numbers can a customer service rep put on a resume?

Contacts per day, quality audit scores, CSAT, first contact resolution, accuracy on transactions and cash, and sign-ups. Use the ones your employer tracked and you remember accurately.

Do customer service jobs need a cover letter?

Not always, but if the application allows one, a short letter helps, especially when you are switching industries. Mention the customers you have served and why this employer's customers interest you.

How far back should a customer service resume go?

About ten years is plenty. Older jobs can shrink to one line each or come off, unless they show something the posting asks for.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Leslie PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
