Sales engineer resume template

Short answer

Use FAANGPath. It prints skills above work experience, so the APIs, data tools and cloud platforms you demo are read before your deals, which matches how an SE hiring manager screens: technical depth first, commercial results second. The fictional sample is a senior sales engineer at a data integration company who came from backend development. The same page serves solutions engineer postings, which usually describe the same pre-sales work.

Why FAANGPath suits a sales engineer resume

FAANGPath is made for technical candidates who want their languages and tools read before their jobs, and a sales engineer is hired first on technical credibility. Its centred black-and-grey layout keeps the page sober for an engineering audience, and the labelled skill rows hold APIs, cloud platforms and sales tools on separate lines.

Second choice: Catalyst. Catalyst opens on experience with no summary, a good fit once the technical wins in your current job are the strongest thing you have.

What goes in each section, in FAANGPath's order

FAANGPath prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Your technical background, what you sell and to whom, and the size of deals you support. "Former backend developer supporting enterprise deals for a data integration platform" places you in one line.
  2. Skills. Separate what you build with (Python, SQL, REST APIs, SSO protocols, Docker) from the platforms customers run on (AWS, Snowflake) and the sales stack (Salesforce, Gong). Hiring managers look for the integrations their buyers ask about.
  3. Work Experience. Show the technical win: proofs of concept run and how many converted, security reviews you carried, a custom demo or script that unblocked a deal. Attach revenue only as a team result you supported, with the number of account executives you worked beside.
  4. Education. An engineering or computer science degree helps, but a solid engineering job history counts for more. Keep it to one line.
  5. Certifications. Cloud or product certifications your buyers recognize. FAANGPath prints them near the end, so mention the most relevant one in the summary too.

How to make the sample yours

Name your product category and buyer

Replace data integration and data engineering teams with what you sell and who evaluates it: security software to SOC teams, payment APIs to developers, ERP to finance leaders.

Report POCs as a count and a conversion

The sample says how many proofs of concept ran and how many became contracts. Use your real figures; if nobody tracked conversion, give how many you ran and the typical deal size.

Keep one engineering job on the page

If you came from development, leave that job with two or three bullets showing code you shipped. It answers "can they go deep on a technical call" before anyone asks.

Check your certification date

AWS says its Solutions Architect Associate certification is valid for three years. Write the year you earned or renewed yours, or remove it if it has lapsed.

List the sales tools you really used

Gong and Salesforce are common, but write what your team worked in, including demo automation or sandbox platforms.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • sales engineering
  • solutions engineering
  • technical discovery
  • proof of concept (POC)
  • product demos
  • technical win
  • security questionnaires
  • RFP responses
  • REST APIs
  • SSO (SAML, OAuth)
  • Python
  • SQL
  • AWS
  • Salesforce
  • pre-sales

Mistakes to avoid

  • Claiming a quota you did not carry. Most sales engineers share credit with account executives, so describe your part.
  • A skills list of every technology you have heard of. Anything listed can turn into a live demo or whiteboard question.
  • Naming prospects or customers from open deals. Describe them by industry and size.
  • Writing like a salesperson with no technical detail, or like an engineer with no business result; the page needs both.

Frequently asked questions

Should a sales engineer resume show revenue?

Yes, framed as shared: the pipeline or bookings you supported with your account executives. Pair it with figures that are clearly yours, such as proofs of concept run and converted, or security reviews handled.

Should I use "sales engineer" or "solutions engineer" as my title?

Use the title you held in each job, and put the posting's title in your headline if the work matches. Many companies use the two names for the same pre-sales role, so the bullets matter more than the label.

How do I move from software engineering into sales engineering?

Show the customer-facing moments in your engineering jobs: sales calls you joined, integrations you built with customers, documentation you wrote for them. Keep the pure engineering bullets short and make the customer-facing ones specific.

I sell industrial or hardware products. Does this layout still work?

Yes. Swap the software skills for the products and standards you work with (PLCs, motion control, HVAC systems, CAD) and keep the pattern: technical skills first, then the projects and orders you supported.

Is a cloud certification worth listing for a sales engineer?

If your buyers run on that cloud, it gives you a shared vocabulary and a credential they recognize. It does not replace evidence of deals you supported, so list it under certifications and mention it once in the summary.

Will applicant tracking systems read this FAANGPath PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
