Electrical engineer resume template

Short answer

Meridian suits an electrical engineer because it prints labelled skill rows above the jobs, so design areas and study software are read before job titles. It uses no colour and prints cleanly beside a drawing set. The fictional sample is a licensed PE at an MEP consulting firm who designs power distribution for hospitals and schools, runs arc flash studies in ETAP and mentors three engineers in training.

Why Meridian suits an electrical engineer resume

Meridian prints skills above experience in labelled rows, so an MEP principal sees the design areas (distribution, emergency power, arc flash) and the software (ETAP, Revit) before the job list. Its centred header has room for "PE (Power)" in the job title line, and the grey-ruled page reads like the engineering documents it will sit beside.

Second choice: Leslie. Leslie prints experience before skills under a blue header; choose it when your project history is the stronger half of the page.

What goes in each section, in Meridian's order

Meridian prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Field of electrical work (building power, utilities, controls, electronics), license status, years, and the building or system types you design. A building-systems engineer and a circuit designer read very differently, so say which you are in the first line.
  2. Skills. Design areas in the first row (power distribution, emergency and standby power, lighting, short-circuit and coordination studies), then the tools. Name study software exactly: ETAP, SKM PowerTools, EasyPower.
  3. Work Experience. Project types and construction values, the systems you designed yourself, the studies you ran and how many engineers you review. One bullet on construction administration (RFIs, submittals) shows you have followed a design into the field.
  4. Education. BSEE or MSEE with school and year. Coursework is only worth listing in the first two years, and only if it matches the post (power systems, machines, protection).
  5. Certifications. PE with state and discipline, then FE or EIT status if you are not yet licensed. NCEES offers an Electrical and Computer PE exam with separate Power and Electrical and Electronics versions, so name yours.
  6. Selected projects. A "Selected projects" list with building type, size and the electrical scope (service size, generators, special systems) gives a quick sense of scale.

How to make the sample yours

Say which kind of electrical engineer you are

Building power, utility protection, industrial controls and circuit design hire from different pools. Rewrite the headline and first line so a recruiter knows within seconds.

Replace the project list with yours

Give building type, construction value and the electrical highlights: service size, emergency power, healthcare or data center requirements.

Name your study and design software

Swap ETAP and Revit for what you use. If you do your own load calculations in spreadsheets, say so rather than listing a package you have not run.

Show license progress

Not licensed yet? Write "EIT, PE (Power) exam scheduled 04/2027" in the headline and keep the FE result under certifications.

Keep one field bullet

Site surveys, start-up witnessing or RFI responses show you understand how designs get built. One bullet is enough.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • electrical engineering
  • power distribution
  • Professional Engineer (PE)
  • short-circuit study
  • arc flash study
  • coordination study
  • emergency power
  • load calculations
  • lighting design
  • one-line diagrams
  • panel schedules
  • ETAP
  • Revit MEP
  • construction administration
  • National Electrical Code (NEC)

Mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing building power and electronics skills on one page so the reader cannot tell which job you want.
  • Listing studies by name without saying which you ran and which you only reviewed.
  • Writing "PE" when you have passed the exam but the board has not yet issued the license.
  • Dropping construction values; MEP firms compare the scale of projects first.

Frequently asked questions

Should an electrical engineer list the PE exam discipline?

Yes. NCEES offers Electrical and Computer PE exams in Power, Electrical and Electronics, and Computer Engineering, and employers look for the one that matches the work. Write it after the state: "PE (Power), Arizona".

How do I show project scale on an electrical engineering resume?

Construction value, building size and service size are the quickest signals. Add them to the project list and to one bullet in each job.

What if I work in electronics rather than power?

Then lead with circuit design, simulation and board-level tools instead of distribution and studies. The electronics engineer template on this site shows that version.

Should I list the National Electrical Code?

Name it in keywords or a skill if you design to it, and mention any local amendments you work with. Avoid listing code editions you have not used.

How long should an electrical engineer resume be?

One page for EITs, two for licensed engineers with a project list. Keep the license and current job on page one.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Meridian PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 6 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
