Engineering resume template
Short answer
Henrietta works well for engineering: a conventional black and grey page that prints education right after experience, where an ABET-accredited degree and licensure progress belong. The fictional sample is a structural engineer in training at a Raleigh consulting firm, with designed systems, analysis models, calculation packages checked by the engineer of record, shop drawing reviews and an FE exam pass.

Why Henrietta suits an engineering resume
Henrietta prints education directly after work experience, and engineering is a field where the degree is part of the licensing path rather than background detail. The rest is the classic business layout (left-aligned name, hairline rules, black and grey), which suits consulting firms that also drop staff resumes into client proposals.
Second choice: FAANGPath. FAANGPath puts skills rows before the jobs, better for software, controls or data engineers whose tools lead the application.
What goes in each section, in Henrietta's order
Henrietta prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Give your discipline, the project types you design and your licensure stage: FE passed, PE, or PE in several states. Engineering firms staff and bill by discipline and market, and licensure tells them what you can seal.
- Work Experience. Bullets should show design responsibility: the systems you designed, the analysis tools you used, who checked or sealed the work, and construction-phase tasks such as shop drawing review and site visits. Name project type and size; "600-space parking deck" says more than "parking structure".
- Education. Henrietta prints this right after experience. NCEES says PE licensure generally starts with a bachelor's degree from an EAC/ABET-accredited program, so give the degree exactly and note accreditation.
- Skills. The grid has no labels; start with design competencies, then analysis and drafting software, then coordination skills. Analysis software is checked by name, so match the posting where you honestly can.
- Certifications. List the FE pass (or EIT or EI status, in your state's term) and later the PE with its states. NCEES calls the FE generally the first step toward becoming a licensed PE.

How to make the sample yours
State your licensure stage plainly
NCEES describes the common path as an ABET-accredited degree, the FE exam, four years of progressive experience in most states, and the PE exam, with state boards issuing the license. Say where you are on it in both the summary and certifications.
Separate designing from drafting
Write "designed" for systems you sized and "drafted" or "modeled" for drawings you produced. Reviewers at engineering firms read that difference closely.
Say who checked your work
Calculations "checked and sealed by the engineer of record" is honest and shows you work inside a quality process, which consulting firms care about for professional liability.
Swap the discipline
Mechanical and electrical engineers name HVAC, power or controls systems and load calculations; civil engineers name site, water or transportation work; manufacturing engineers move toward process and product. The licensure and design-responsibility pattern stays.
Add construction-phase evidence
Shop drawing reviews, RFIs answered and site observations show you understand how designs get built, which firms look for before giving an engineer projects of their own.
Keywords to keep where they are true
Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

Mistakes to avoid
- Wording that implies a PE license you do not hold.
- Software listed without the kind of design you did with it.
- Project names with no type, size or role.
- Sole design credit for sealed work you prepared under supervision.

Frequently asked questions
Should I put EIT after my name?
Once you have passed the FE, add EIT or EI, using your state board's term, to your headline or title. Only licensed engineers put PE after their name.
How many years until I can take the PE exam?
It depends on the state. NCEES notes that most states require four years of acceptable, progressive and verifiable experience on the common path, and many offer other routes, so check your board's rules.
Should a graduate engineer list university projects?
Yes, a capstone or design competition with your role and results, until you have two or three years of work. Trim it once paid projects can replace it.
Is a two-page engineering resume acceptable?
For senior engineers with many projects, yes. Early-career engineers should fit one page; firms usually keep a separate project list or CV for proposals.
How do engineers move between industries?
Lead with the transferable core (analysis, design responsibility, codes and standards, project delivery) and learn the target industry's tools. Say what you would bring from your current side, such as design knowledge for a contractor.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Henrietta PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
