Engineering director resume template
Short answer
Leslie suits a director of engineering: it keeps a summary for the size of the organization you run, prints experience ahead of skills and adds one touch of blue. The fictional sample leads 42 engineers through four managers at a Denver benefits software company, owns a $7.8M budget, grew the group from 26 people and cut cloud spend, after six years running payments teams as a senior engineering manager.

Why Leslie suits an engineering director resume
Leslie prints the summary, then work experience, then skills, so a director can state the organization (teams, managers, budget, products) in two sentences before the record that proves it. The centred blue name and short blue underlines add one restrained accent, which reads as senior without the full colour band of Olivia.
Second choice: Catalyst. Catalyst drops the summary and opens on the current job, a fit when the director title and headline already say everything about scope.
What goes in each section, in Leslie's order
Leslie prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Two sentences of scope: engineers and managers in your group, the products or platforms they own, the budget and who you report to. Add the change you are known for, such as scaling hiring, a platform rebuild or a reliability turnaround.
- Work Experience. Write at organization level. Each bullet should be something no single team could have done alone: a reorganization, a hiring plan, a budget decision, a migration that opened a new market. Keep one bullet on how you develop the managers under you.
- Skills. Lead the Technical row with organization skills (org design, headcount and budget planning, build versus buy, delivery metrics), then put the platforms your teams run on the Tools row. Nobody expects a director to code, but the stack tells a VP which organizations you could step into.
- Education. Degrees on one line each. An MBA belongs here if you have one; Leslie prints education after skills, so a twenty-year-old degree stays out of the way of the director record.
- Organization building. An Organization building list for systems you left behind: a career framework, an incident review practice, a manager onboarding program. Directors are judged on what keeps working after they move on.

Rachel Lindqvist
Director of Engineering, Benefits and Payroll Platform
Denver, CO | rachel.lindqvist@example.com | (303) 555-0136 | linkedin.com/in/sample-rachel-lindqvist
Director of engineering at a benefits software company, leading 42 engineers in six teams through four engineering managers and owning a $7.8M annual budget. Known for scaling hiring without lowering the bar and for replacing batch systems with real-time integrations that larger clients require.
Experience
Director of Engineering, Front Range Benefits Cloud, Denver, CO (02/2022 to Present)
- Lead six teams (enrollment, payroll integrations, carrier connections, mobile, platform, test automation) through four engineering managers and two staff engineers; report to the CTO.
- Grew engineering from 26 to 42 people in 18 months with a structured interview loop and a shared hiring calendar; median time to fill fell from about 70 days to 45.
- Moved payroll integrations from nightly files to event-driven sync, which let sales close the first two clients with more than 10,000 employees each.
- Cut annual cloud spend by about 18% through right-sizing, storage tiering and a reserved capacity plan agreed with finance.
- Started monthly delivery reviews per service (change lead time, change fail rate, recovery time) that teams use to choose improvements, not as targets.
Senior Engineering Manager, Mesa Ridge Payments, Boulder, CO (03/2016 to 01/2022)
- Managed three teams (19 engineers) building card issuing and ledger services.
- Led the move to a second cloud region, meeting the 99.95% availability commitment in client contracts for 10 quarters in a row.
- Promoted two senior engineers into management and coached them through their first year.
Organization building
- Wrote the engineering career framework (engineer and manager tracks) with HR, used in every promotion cycle since 2023.
- Set up blameless incident reviews with one shared action tracker across all six teams.
- Run a six-month onboarding program for new engineering managers.

How to make the sample yours
Count managers and engineers separately
Write "42 engineers in six teams through four engineering managers". It tells a VP whether you have led through other managers, the step that separates a director from a senior manager.
Show the money you own
Annual budget, cloud spend, contractor and vendor contracts. If finance kept the budget, give the headcount plan you wrote and any savings you found.
Report delivery metrics per service
DORA advises applying its delivery metrics to one application or service at a time and warns against setting them as targets or comparing very different systems. Quote one service before and after rather than an organization-wide average.
Tie engineering to revenue
A contract signed because of a new capability, a larger client tier opened by an integration, uptime commitments kept for a run of quarters. A VP hires a director to turn engineering into a business lever.
Describe reorganizations by purpose
Say what changed (a platform team formed, ownership split, on-call redrawn), why, and what improved afterward. Leave out who left and why.

Mistakes to avoid
- Bullets written at team level (a feature, a bug fix) that your managers would list on their own resumes.
- A headcount with no number of managers, which hides whether you have led through others.
- Figures your employer has not made public, such as revenue, salaries or the size of a layoff.
- A metrics table copied from a dashboard with no before, no after and no service named.

Frequently asked questions
What separates an engineering director resume from an engineering manager resume?
Scope and leverage. A manager shows one or two teams and their results; a director shows several teams led through managers, a budget, a hiring plan and decisions that changed how the whole group works.
Should a director of engineering still list technical skills?
Yes, briefly: the cloud, data and delivery platforms your group runs on. Put organization skills first and leave out long language lists unless the posting asks for hands-on work.
How do I show budget responsibility on a director resume?
Give the annual figure and what it covered (people, cloud, vendors), then a decision you made with it: a cost cut, a vendor replaced, headcount moved to a priority.
How do I move from senior engineering manager to director?
Show that you already led through other managers, planned headcount or ran a program across teams. A bullet about a manager you hired or promoted is strong evidence.
Should I mention a reorganization or layoffs on my resume?
A reorganization you designed can go in, described by its purpose and result. Layoffs are better discussed in the interview, and never with numbers your employer has not published.
Can a director resume run to two pages?
Yes. Keep the summary and the current director role on page one; earlier engineering jobs can shrink to two lines each on page two.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Leslie PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
