Technology industry resume template

Short answer

Daniel works well for people joining technology companies outside engineering. Its three-column skills grid sits above the jobs, so the CRM, help desk and analytics tools are seen early, and its pill headings give a softer page than rules alone. The fictional sample moved from hotel operations to customer success at a construction software company, with renewals, onboarding time and product feedback written in SaaS terms.

Why Daniel suits a technology resume

Resumity suggests Daniel for product managers and others who want a slightly softer look than a page built only from rules, and most people joining tech outside engineering (customer success, sales, support, operations) fit that description. Its skills grid prints before work experience, so the business software you already use is visible before an older job title from another industry.

Second choice: Meridian. Meridian has the same section order but prints the Technical, Tools and Soft Skills labels and has no shaded headings at all.

What goes in each section, in Daniel's order

Daniel prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Name the product category and the customer in the first line ("construction software for mid-market contractors"); software companies hire for domain fit as much as for the role. If you came from another industry, say so in a clause and name the habit you brought, without apologising for the move.
  2. Skills. Daniel prints the skill groups as three columns without labels, so each list has to explain itself: the work you do (onboarding, renewals, health scoring), then named software (Salesforce, Zendesk, Jira), then how you work with people. Tech teams expect a new hire to be useful in their stack within weeks, so name the products.
  3. Work Experience. Write in the numbers a software business runs on: recurring revenue on your book, retention, time to value, ticket volume, adoption of a feature. For a job outside tech, keep the bullets that translate (a system you rolled out, a team you trained, a client you kept) and drop the rest.
  4. Projects. One internal project that shows you can work with data or tools beyond the job description: a health score, a dashboard, a help centre rewrite or an automation. Say who uses it now.
  5. Education. One line. Outside engineering, technology employers rarely screen on degree subject, so a hospitality, history or biology degree can stay exactly as it is.

Customer Success Manager, B2B SaaS

Denver, CO | marisol.ortega@example.com | (720) 555-0143 | linkedin.com/in/sample-marisol-ortega

Customer success manager at a construction software company, looking after 48 mid-market accounts from onboarding to renewal. Came to SaaS after six years running hotel front office teams, and handles escalations the same way: answer fast, fix the cause, follow up in writing.

Experience

Customer Success Manager, Beamline Software, Denver, CO (02/2023 to Present)

  • Own 48 mid-market accounts worth about $2.1M in annual recurring revenue; gross revenue retention on the book was 93% last fiscal year.
  • Rebuilt the onboarding plan around three milestones, cutting median time to the first scheduled project from 41 to 19 days.
  • Run quarterly business reviews with contractors' operations leads, using Looker usage data to show which crews had stopped logging work.
  • Logged more than 60 feature requests in Jira with account value attached; two shipped as the offline daily report and bulk user import.
  • Answer customer security questionnaires with the company's SOC 2 report and route data deletion requests to the legal team.

Front Office Manager, Larkspur Hotel Group, Boulder, CO (05/2017 to 01/2023)

  • Led a front desk team of 14 at a 220-room hotel; guest satisfaction scores rose from 8.1 to 8.8 out of 10 over two years.
  • Moved the property onto a cloud property management system and trained every shift, the first software rollout I ran.
  • Handled escalations for corporate and group accounts, including a conference client that renewed for three more years.

Projects

Account health score: A red, amber and green health score in Gainsight built from login frequency, open tickets and project volume.

  • Now the agenda for the six-person success team's weekly risk review.

Customer onboarding, Renewal forecasting, Health scoring, SQL (reporting), Feature request triage, Salesforce, Gainsight, Zendesk, Jira, Looker, Slack, Business reviews with executives, Escalation handling, Customer training

How to make the sample yours

Swap in your target company's domain

Construction software, payroll, security tools and developer platforms all sell to different buyers. Read the company's customer stories and rewrite the summary and the business review bullet for the people you would actually talk to.

Convert old metrics into SaaS ones

Repeat guests become retention, upsells become expansion revenue, a new booking system becomes an onboarding project. The sample's hotel job keeps its own numbers but picks the bullets a software hiring manager recognises.

Match the tool list to the posting

If the ad names HubSpot rather than Salesforce, or Intercom rather than Zendesk, list what you have used and add the other only if you have worked in it. Most of these products offer free trials or sandboxes you can learn on.

Keep a bullet about the product team

Feature requests you logged with account value attached, bugs you reproduced or a beta you ran show that you close the loop between customers and engineering, which interviewers probe in almost every non-engineering tech role.

Change the role, keep the shape

For sales, replace retention with quota attainment and pipeline; for support, use first response time and satisfaction; for product operations, use releases shipped and processes changed. The summary, skills grid and project pattern stay the same.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • SaaS
  • annual recurring revenue
  • net revenue retention
  • churn
  • customer onboarding
  • time to value
  • Salesforce
  • Zendesk
  • Jira
  • cross-functional
  • agile
  • product feedback
  • SOC 2
  • quarterly business reviews

Mistakes to avoid

  • "Tech-savvy" or "proficient in Microsoft Office" as your technology evidence. Name the business software you have used and what you did in it.
  • Hiding a previous industry. Software companies hire domain knowledge on purpose: a former nurse selling health software or a former teacher at an edtech firm is an asset.
  • Writing about "customers" with no count, segment or revenue attached.
  • Claiming engineering skills from one short course. SQL for reporting is worth listing; "full stack developer" after a weekend tutorial will be tested in the interview.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a job at a tech company without a computer science degree?

Yes. Customer success, sales, support, recruiting, marketing, operations and many product roles hire on experience and communication rather than degree subject. Show the software you already use and one example of learning a new system quickly.

What counts as technology experience if I worked in another industry?

Any time you rolled out, configured or trained people on software, pulled reports from a system, or worked with a vendor to fix a problem. Put those bullets first under the older job.

Should a technology resume mention SOC 2?

Only if you did related work, such as answering security questionnaires with the report or gathering audit evidence. The AICPA describes SOC 2 as an examination of a service organisation's controls relevant to security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality or privacy, so name the part you touched.

How do I show results when my company keeps revenue private?

Use counts and ratios: accounts on your book, retention as a percentage, onboarding days before and after, tickets resolved a week. A rounded figure for the revenue you manage is usually acceptable.

How long should a resume for a tech company be?

One page for most people with under ten years of experience. Shrink older jobs from other industries to two or three translated bullets rather than deleting them; they explain your domain knowledge.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Daniel PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 9 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
