Illustrator resume template
Short answer
Daniel is a good home for an illustrator's resume: its grey heading pills give the page a softer, hand-made feel while staying plain, and skills sit above the jobs so your media and software are read first. The fictional sample freelances for magazines and children's publishers after three years at a greeting card company, listing commissions, published books, licensing habits and print preparation.

Why Daniel suits an illustrator resume
Daniel is the template meant for creative people who want something softer than rules alone: headings sit in rounded light-grey pills and everything is set in Inter. It prints skills before experience in three columns, so your specialisms, traditional media and digital tools are seen before a long run of freelance clients.
Second choice: Olivia. Olivia's solid blue header band stands out on screen, which helps when an art director opens your resume beside dozens of portfolio links.
What goes in each section, in Daniel's order
Daniel prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Name the markets you draw for (editorial, publishing, packaging, games, surface design) and how you work: digital, traditional or both. Art directors book illustrators by fit, so a line on the range of your style helps more than adjectives about creativity.
- Skills. Daniel shows three columns without labels. Put specialisms in the first group, since that column is read first, then software and hardware, then the working skills clients pay for, such as following art direction and handling licences.
- Work Experience. Treat freelance years as one job with dates. Bullets should give the kind of client, the brief and the constraint: a 48-hour turnaround, a six-image feature, a spread count, a wall graphic three metres wide. Constraints prove you deliver, which a portfolio alone cannot show.
- Education. An illustration BFA, diploma or a respected short course on one line. Self-taught illustrators can list a single relevant course or leave the detail light.
- Books and exhibitions. Books published, exhibitions, awards and notable clients go in one titled list. Give each book its publisher and year so an editor can look it up.

How to make the sample yours
Give every commission a constraint
Turnaround, image count, print size, rounds of revisions. The sample's 48-hour op-ed spot tells an art director more about reliability than any description of your style.
Mention rights, not fees
You do not need to show what you charged, but one line on licensing (usage, territory, term) shows you run a business. Leave it out if an agent handles your contracts.
Name clients when the work is public
Published editorial and books can be named. For unreleased or NDA work, write the client type: "a national news magazine" or "a children's educational publisher".
Swap picture books for your market
Games studios want concept art, character turnarounds and asset delivery; packaging clients want dielines and print specs; surface design wants repeats and colourways. Rewrite the bullets in that market's terms.
Keep traditional media visible
If you paint or ink by hand, list the media. Some publishers and galleries look specifically for original art they can exhibit or sell.
Keywords to keep where they are true

Mistakes to avoid
- Pasting thumbnails of your artwork onto the resume. Images belong in the portfolio, and a page full of them is hard for anyone to read.
- One line per client for years of freelancing. Group the work into one entry and pick the commissions closest to the job.
- Listing a style ("whimsical", "bold") as a skill. Let the portfolio show style and use the skills grid for media, specialisms and tools.
- Leaving out deadlines and revision rounds, the details that tell an editor you are easy to commission.

Frequently asked questions
Should an illustrator list every freelance client?
No. Name the five or six clients or client types closest to the job you want. A long client list squeezes out the bullets that show how you work.
Do illustrators need a degree?
Many working illustrators have no illustration degree; portfolios carry most hiring decisions. List the education you have plainly, including short courses that shaped your practice.
How do I show picture book work before it is published?
List the book with the publisher, "forthcoming" and the expected season. Do not share spreads publicly until the publisher allows it.
What changes when I apply for an in-house job after freelancing?
Show the habits in-house teams need: working to an art director, repeat clients, deadlines met, files prepared for production. Those bullets answer the worry that freelancers struggle with team processes.
Should I mention the agent who represents me?
Yes, in the freelance entry or the header, since commissioning editors may contact the agent rather than you. Keep agency terms off the page.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Daniel PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
