Plumber resume template

Short answer

Leslie suits a plumber: it prints work experience straight after a short summary, so the calls you run, the systems you install and the inspections you pass come before the tool list. The fictional sample is a licensed journeyman on residential service, clearing drains, replacing water heaters and mentoring apprentices, after five years of apprenticeship and rough-in work on new homes.

Why Leslie suits a plumber resume

Leslie runs summary, work experience, skills, education and certifications, so a service manager reads your license level in the summary and your calls and installs next. Plumbing is hired on what you have fixed and built to code, and that order puts it first. The centred blue header is the only colour, so the page still looks like trade paperwork.

Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta prints education straight after the jobs; better while your apprenticeship school is recent and carries weight.

What goes in each section, in Leslie's order

Leslie prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. License level and state first ("licensed journeyman plumber, Minnesota"), then years, the work you do most (service, new construction, commercial) and one result such as callbacks or inspections passed.
  2. Work Experience. Service plumbers give calls per day, the problems they fix (drains, water heaters, fixtures, sewer lines) and callback rate. New construction plumbers give homes or buildings, rough-in and finish, pipe materials and inspections passed. Add apprentices you train.
  3. Skills. Labelled rows after the jobs. Technical holds the plumbing work (drain diagnosis, rough-in, water heaters, soldering, code compliance); Tools names the sewer camera, jetter, press or PEX tools and the dispatch software.
  4. Education. The apprenticeship classroom program or trade school, with the year you finished. A high school diploma can follow on its own line.
  5. Certifications. The plumbing license with its level, state and year, then safety cards such as an OSHA 10-hour construction course. They print last, so the summary repeats the license.

How to make the sample yours

Put license level and state up front

Apprentice, journeyman or master, and where. A contractor hiring in one state needs to know at once whether you can work there or must test again.

Split service from construction

Service work is judged on diagnosis, customer handling and callbacks; new construction on layout, speed and inspections. Lead with the side the posting is hiring for.

Name pipe materials and systems

Copper, PEX, PVC, cast iron, tankless water heaters, backflow devices, grease traps. Each one tells a contractor what you can take on without supervision.

Show code work through inspections

Rough-in and final inspections passed without corrections say more than "knowledge of plumbing code".

Mention apprentices you train

Teaching soldering, layout or diagnosis shows you are ready to run jobs or a service van on your own.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Leaving the license level and state off the top half of the page.
  • "Performed plumbing repairs" with no call volume, systems or callbacks.
  • Claiming a master license before the state has issued it.
  • Listing every tool in the van instead of the work you can do with it.

Frequently asked questions

Where should my plumbing license go on a resume?

In the summary, with level and state, and again under certifications with the license year. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that most states and some localities require plumbers to be licensed, with journey-level status after an apprenticeship and exam and master status after more experience and another exam, so the level matters to every employer.

How do I list a plumbing apprenticeship?

Give the sponsor, the years and the hours. BLS describes most plumbing apprenticeships as lasting four or five years, with about 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training plus technical instruction each year, so a reader knows what your hours mean.

How is a service plumber resume different from a new construction resume?

Service resumes show diagnosis, calls per day, customer handling and callbacks. New construction resumes show layout from plans, rough-in and finish, speed and inspections. Many plumbers have done both; lead with the one you want next.

Should I include customer reviews on a plumber resume?

A single line works, such as "named in 40 five-star reviews last year". Do not paste quotes or customer names.

How long should a plumber resume be?

One page for most plumbers. A master plumber who has run crews or a business can use two.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Leslie PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
