UI designer resume template
Short answer
Olivia suits a UI designer who wants the resume itself to look finished: a solid blue header band with white text, and skills printed above experience. The fictional sample designs screens for a mobile savings app: interaction states, light and dark colour tokens checked for contrast, a Figma component library developers build from, and micro-interactions specified for handoff. An earlier fitness app job adds an icon set and design QA.

Why Olivia suits a UI designer resume
A UI designer is judged on visual craft, and Olivia is the boldest of the seven: a full-width blue header band with the name in white makes the page stand out on screen at first glance. Skills print above experience as labelled rows, so Figma, tokens and interaction design are read before the job history.
Second choice: Daniel. Daniel is quieter: grey heading pills, no colour and a three-column skills grid. Pick it if a blue band feels too loud beside your portfolio.
What goes in each section, in Olivia's order
Olivia prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Platforms and the layer you own: "mobile banking and fitness apps; high-fidelity screens, components and tokens". UI jobs range from marketing pages to app design systems, so say which you do.
- Skills. Olivia prints Technical, Tools and Soft Skills as labelled rows. Put craft (typography, layout, states, tokens) under Technical and software under Tools, naming the Figma features you use well.
- Work Experience. Show shipped interface work and the system behind it: screens and their states, tokens, components, specs developers used. A bullet on accessibility checks such as contrast shows craft that holds up beyond the mockup.
- Education. Design degree or diploma, school and year. Self-taught designers can list a course or certificate here and let the portfolio carry the rest.

How to make the sample yours
Put the portfolio link beside your email
Replace the sample link with yours. A UI designer's resume exists mostly to get the portfolio opened, so the link belongs in the header band.
Name the states and edge cases you design
Empty, loading, error and offline states separate production UI from portfolio shots. Swap in the states from your own product.
Give your component work real counts
The 120 components are an illustration. Write how many you maintain, which teams use them and whether they map to code components.
Specify motion only if you hand it off
Timing and easing values in a spec show developer-ready work. If you only animate inside prototypes, write "prototyped" instead.
Check the band against your own brand colours
Olivia's band is blue. If your portfolio uses a strong colour of its own, look at the two side by side before sending; Daniel is the fallback if they clash.

Mistakes to avoid
- A portfolio of concept redesigns of famous apps with no shipped work mentioned on the resume.
- Skill bars or star ratings for Figma and Illustrator; a reader cannot check them.
- Claiming UX research you did not do. A UI role is a full job on its own.
- Low-contrast grey text on your own portfolio site, which reviewers notice straight away.
How the sample PDF reads in text extractors
We exported this sample with Resumity's PDF exporter in Chrome on 2026-10-29 and read the file back with three open-source text extractors. This shows whether software that turns a PDF into text can recover it; it is not a test of any commercial applicant tracking system. How we test templates.
| Extractor | Name, email, phone | Headings | Bullets intact |
|---|---|---|---|
| pdf.js 4.10.38 | All found | 4 of 4 | 7 of 7 |
| pdftotext (Xpdf) 4.00 | All found | 4 of 4 | 7 of 7 |

Frequently asked questions
Should my resume say UI designer or UX designer?
Use the title that matches your work and the posting. A UI resume leads with visual and interaction craft (screens, states, components, tokens); a UX resume leads with research, flows and testing. Many jobs want both, so weight yours to the role.
Should a UI designer use a creative resume layout?
A well-set, readable page shows craft better than heavy decoration, and the portfolio is where visual range belongs. Olivia gives you one strong element, the blue header band, and keeps the rest plain.
How many portfolio projects should a UI designer link?
Three to five strong case studies, shipped work first. Each should show the final UI, its states and edge cases, and the system it fits into.
Do UI designers need to code?
Not usually, but knowing how components and tokens work in code makes handoff smoother. If you write HTML and CSS, list them.
Is dark mode or theme work worth a bullet?
Yes, if you did it. Theme work and contrast checks show you design a system rather than single screens.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Olivia PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 4 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
