Resume template with a skills section near the top

Short answer

FAANGPath puts the skills section directly under the summary, ahead of work experience, in labelled rows so methods, tools and soft skills each get their own line. That suits a data analyst whose SQL, Python and dashboard tools are half the job. The fictional sample backs every listed skill with a bullet further down the page, the habit most worth copying.

Why FAANGPath suits a skills section resume

FAANGPath is meant for technical candidates who want their languages and tools read before their jobs: skills print straight after the summary, as labelled rows with a dot after each label. A reader sees SQL, Python and Tableau in the opening lines, then the jobs where each was used.

Second choice: Meridian. Meridian keeps the same skills-first order and labelled rows, with a colon after each label and grey rules that run to the right of each heading.

What goes in each section, in FAANGPath's order

FAANGPath prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Name the two or three skills you most want read and the job where you used them. The rows directly below repeat them as a list, so the summary can stop at three lines.
  2. Skills. Three rows, each specific. Technical holds methods (SQL window functions, cohort analysis, test readouts), Tools holds named software, and Soft Skills holds two or three working habits your bullets prove. Ten to fifteen items in all is plenty; a row that wraps past two lines needs trimming.
  3. Work Experience. Every skill in the rows above should turn up in at least one bullet here, in use: "Wrote SQL to report weekly margin" rather than "Used SQL". A reader who doubts a listed skill goes looking for it in the jobs.
  4. Education. Degree and school, plus a statistics or database course only if the skills rows lean on it and your work history is short.
  5. Certifications. A tool certificate supports one line of the Tools row. It prints after education at the bottom of the page, so make sure the tool it covers is already named in the skills rows.

How to make the sample yours

Rebuild the rows from the posting

Copy the required and preferred skills from the job ad, cross out any you cannot show in a bullet, and order each row by what the posting stresses most.

Keep methods and software in separate rows

Methods such as regression or forecasting go under Technical; products such as Snowflake or Looker go under Tools. Mixing them makes both rows slower to scan.

Drop skills every applicant has

Email, Microsoft Word and web research take space a missing method could use. Keep Excel only when you name the advanced parts you rely on, as the sample does with Power Query.

Copy the posting's spelling

If the ad says "Power BI", do not write "PowerBI"; if it says "statistical modeling", use that phrase rather than a synonym, as long as it describes your work.

Add a languages row only when it matters

The sample has none. If a spoken language helps with the job, add it with a level (fluent, conversational) and FAANGPath prints it as another labelled row.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • SQL
  • Python (pandas)
  • Tableau
  • Power BI
  • data cleaning
  • dashboard design
  • A/B testing
  • cohort analysis
  • Snowflake
  • stakeholder reporting
  • KPI tracking
  • data visualization

Mistakes to avoid

  • Rating skills with stars, bars or percentages. "Python 80%" tells a reader nothing; a bullet that shows the work does.
  • A skills list with nothing below to support it. If a skill appears in no bullet, expect it to be the first interview question.
  • Single-word soft skills such as "hard-working" or "passionate". Keep two or three that describe how you work, and show them in a bullet.
  • One long comma-separated run of forty tools. A few labelled rows of a handful each are far quicker to read.

Frequently asked questions

Where should the skills section go on a resume?

Near the top when your tools are central to the job, as in data, IT and engineering; after experience when your job history is the stronger evidence. Resumity templates fix this: FAANGPath, Meridian, Daniel and Olivia print skills right after the summary, Leslie and Catalyst after experience, and Henrietta after education.

How many skills should I list on a resume?

Enough to cover what the posting asks for and you can prove, often ten to fifteen across all rows. Past that, the important ones get lost in the list.

Should hard skills and soft skills be listed separately?

Yes. Give methods and software their own rows and keep soft skills to a short third row. FAANGPath prints each group as a labelled line, so the split is visible at a glance.

Do I need a skills section if my bullets already mention my skills?

It still helps. The bullets show skills in context; the section lets a reader confirm quickly that the essentials are there. Keep the two consistent with each other.

Can a skills section replace work experience?

Not on its own. Even a skills-based resume needs jobs, projects or training underneath that show each skill being used.

Will applicant tracking systems read this FAANGPath PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
