Resume template with a publications section

Short answer

Henrietta handles a publications list well for a researcher applying to industry: it prints the PhD straight after work experience, and the papers appear under their own Publications heading at the end. The fictional sample is a postdoctoral soil microbiologist moving to an agricultural biotech company, with four selected papers in one consistent citation style, including a preprint labelled as under review.

Why Henrietta suits a publications section resume

Henrietta is a conventional layout that prints education right after work experience, so the PhD and dissertation sit directly under the postdoc rather than below a skills list. Its plain black and grey styling keeps a run of citations easy to read, and the publications print as their own titled section at the end.

Second choice: Meridian. Meridian prints skills first and education after any projects; choose it if your lab techniques and software matter more to the employer than the degree.

What goes in each section, in Henrietta's order

Henrietta prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Give your field, your main methods and the one paper or result the hiring team should know about, because the publications list prints after everything else on the page.
  2. Work Experience. Write research positions as jobs: what you ran, what you built, who used the results, what you managed. Leave paper titles for the list at the end rather than restating them in bullets.
  3. Education. PhD, field, university and year, with the dissertation title in the detail line. For an industry application one line on the dissertation is enough; the advisor's name is optional.
  4. Skills. Henrietta prints skills in a three-column grid without group labels, one group per column. Put lab and field methods in the first group and analysis software in the second.
  5. Publications. A custom list titled "Publications". Resumity has no built-in publications section, so add one titled list; every template prints it last. Use the citation style your field uses, keep the published author order, and pick the four to six papers most relevant to the role. An academic application needs the full record on a CV instead.

Soil microbiologist with a PhD and three years of postdoctoral research on root-associated bacteria and crop yield. Designs field and greenhouse trials, runs qPCR and metagenomic sequencing, and analyzes results in R. Lead author of a 2025 field trial paper on nitrogen-fixing inoculants; looking for a research scientist role in agricultural biotech.

Experience

Postdoctoral Researcher, Plant and Soil Sciences, Valley Oak University, Davis, CA (09/2023 to Present)

  • Designed and ran a two-season field trial of microbial inoculants on 48 wheat plots with two partner farms.
  • Built an R pipeline for 16S sequencing data that the lab now uses for all amplicon projects.
  • Supervise two PhD students and one technician and manage a lab budget of about $90K a year.
  • Co-wrote a funded state research grant and wrote its annual progress reports.

Graduate Research Assistant, Microbiology, Thornbury University, Madison, WI (08/2018 to 08/2023)

  • Ran qPCR assays tracking nitrogen-cycling genes in more than 600 soil samples.
  • Maintained the lab sample database and trained eight undergraduates in sterile technique.
  • Presented results at three national soil science meetings.

How to make the sample yours

Cut the list to papers this employer cares about

An agricultural biotech company wants the field trial and the sequencing workflow, not a review on an unrelated topic. Four to six well-chosen papers say more than a complete list.

Pick one citation style and keep to it

APA, your main journal's style or a short author, year, title, journal form all work; mixing them looks careless. The sample uses a short author-year form throughout.

Add DOIs only for the papers you most want read

A DOI helps a reader find a paper but lengthens every line. Add it to the one or two most relevant entries and leave the rest as plain citations.

Label preprints and submissions honestly

Mark them "preprint" or "under review" with the year, and update the entry when the paper is accepted. Never list a submitted manuscript as published.

Translate lab work into industry terms

Grant reports and lab management become project delivery and budget responsibility for an industry reader. Keep the facts, change the vocabulary.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • soil microbiology
  • metagenomic sequencing
  • qPCR
  • field trials
  • experimental design
  • R (tidyverse)
  • Python
  • bioinformatics pipelines
  • peer-reviewed publications
  • grant writing
  • lab management
  • scientific communication

Mistakes to avoid

  • Listing every paper, poster and talk on an industry resume. Keep the selected few; the full record belongs on a CV or a public profile.
  • Mixing citation styles, or abbreviating some journal names and spelling out others.
  • Reordering authors to put your own name first. Keep the published order.
  • Calling a submitted manuscript published. Use "under review" until it is accepted.

Frequently asked questions

How do I list publications on a resume?

Under a heading of their own, in one citation style, most recent first. Keep the published author order and include the journal and year for each paper.

Should publications go on a resume or only on a CV?

Both, in different amounts. An academic CV lists everything; an industry resume lists the few papers that match the job and can point to the full record on a public profile such as Google Scholar or ORCID.

Can I include preprints or papers under review?

Yes, labelled clearly as "preprint" or "under review" with the year. Update the entry once the paper is accepted or published.

How many publications should I list on an industry resume?

Four to six chosen for relevance is a sensible range. If you have only one or two, list them; a single peer-reviewed paper is still evidence of finished research.

Where does the publications section print in a Resumity template?

It is a custom section, and every template prints custom sections at the very end, after certifications. Mention your most relevant paper in the summary so it is not missed.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Henrietta PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
